Book excerpt: "[An] uncanny Gothic mystery... Satisfying."—New York Times Book Review "A romping read with a deliciously dark conceit at its center... Reminded me of Alias Grace."—Kiran Millwood Hargrave From the author of The Silent Companions, a thrilling Victorian gothic horror story about a young seamstress who claims her needle and thread have the power to kill Dorothea Truelove is young, wealthy, and beautiful. Ruth Butterham is young, poor, and awaiting trial for murder. When Dorothea's charitable work brings her to Oakgate Prison, she is delighted by the chance to explore her fascination with phrenology and test her hypothesis that the shape of a person's skull can cast a light on their darkest crimes. But when she meets one of the prisoners, the teenaged seamstress Ruth, she is faced with another strange idea: that it is possible to kill with a needle and thread--because Ruth attributes her crimes to a supernatural power inherent in her stitches. The story Ruth has to tell of her deadly creations—of bitterness and betrayal, of death and dresses—will shake Dorothea's belief in rationality, and the power of redemption. Can Ruth be trusted? Is she mad, or a murderer? For fans of Shirley Jackson, The Poison Thread is a spine-tingling, sinister read about the evil that lurks behind the facade of innocence.

Book excerpt: In Crete during World War II, Alenka, a young woman who fights with the resistance against the brutal Nazi occupation, finds herself caught between her traitor of a brother and the man she loves, an undercover agent working for the Allies. May 1941. German paratroopers launch a blitzkrieg from the air against Crete. They are met with fierce defiance, the Greeks fighting back with daggers, pitchforks, and kitchen knives. During the bloody eleven-day battle, Alenka, a young Greek woman, saves the lives of two Australian soldiers. Jack and Teddy are childhood friends who joined up together to see the world. Both men fall in love with Alenka. They are forced to retreat with the tattered remains of the Allied forces over the towering White Mountains. Both are among the seven thousand Allied soldiers left behind in the desperate evacuation from Crete’s storm-lashed southern coast. Alenka hides Jack and Teddy at great risk to herself. Her brother Axel is a Nazi sympathizer and collaborator and spies on her movements. As Crete suffers under the Nazi jackboot, Alenka is drawn into an intense triangle of conflicting emotions with Jack and Teddy. Their friendship suffers under the strain of months of hiding and their rivalry for her love. Together, they join the resistance and fight to free the island, but all three will find themselves tested to their limits. Alenka must choose whom to trust and whom to love and, in the end, whom to save.

Book The Evil Eye

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alan Dundes
  • Publisher : Univ of Wisconsin Press
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN : 9780299133344
  • Pages : 334 pages

Download or read book The Evil Eye written by Alan Dundes and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evil eye--the power to inflict illness, damage to property, or even death simply by gazing at or praising someone--is among the most pervasive and powerful folk beliefs in the Indo-European and Semitic world. It is also one of the oldest, judging from its appearance in the Bible and in Sumerian texts five thousand years old. Remnants of the superstition persist today when we drink toasts, tip waiters, and bless sneezers. To avert the evil eye, Muslim women wear veils, baseball players avoid mentioning a no-hitter in progress, and traditional Jews say their business or health is "not bad" (rather than "good"). Though by no means universal, the evil eye continues to be a major factor in the behavior of millions of people living in the Mediterranean and Arab countries, as well as among immigrants to the Americas. This widespread superstition has attracted the attention of many scholars, and the twenty-one essays gathered in this book represent research from diverse perspectives: anthropology, classics, folklore studies, ophthalmology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, sociology, and religious studies. Some essays are fascinating reports of beliefs about the evil eye, from India and Iran to Scotland and Slovak-American communities; others analyze the origin, function, and cultural significance of this folk belief from ancient times to the present day. Editor Alan Dundes concludes the volume by proffering a comprehensive theoretical explanation of the evil eye. Anyone who has ever knocked on wood to ward off misfortune will enjoy this generous sampling of evil eye scholarship, and may never see the world through the same eyes again.

Book The Keys of Power

Download or read book The Keys of Power written by J. Abbott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1932, demonstrates how the control of certain ‘-isms’ has for long moulded the interpretation of Indian belief and ritual by Western writers particularly. In every chapter there is some new coordination, often iconoclastic of then-accepted theory, whilst the new wealth of customs carefully recorded is astonishing. Long disputed problems such as that of the Maratha ‘devak’, or that of the ceremonial sowing of seedlings known to Western scholars as the ‘gardens of Adonis’, have at last been settled through careful research.

Book This World Other Worlds

Download or read book This World Other Worlds written by María Cátedra Tomás and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1992-11-15 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vaqueiros de Alzada, a cattle-herding people in the Asturian mountains of Spain, have one of the highest suicide rates in Europe—and an attitude toward death that gives this statistic unusual meaning. This World, Other Worlds considers death among the Vaqueiros as a central cultural fact which reveals local ideas about the origin and destiny of humans, the relations of humans and animals, the configuration of the universe, and the nature of society. Interested chiefly in the conceptual and meaningful aspects of death, María Cátedra focuses on the cultural resources with which the Vaqueiros confront their own mortality—how they experience death and what this reveals about the way they see this world and other worlds. Applying sensitive ethnographic insight to a rich body of oral testimony, Cátedra discloses an unsuspected symbolic universe native to the Vaqueiros. Death is seen here in close, coherent relation to pain, age, and suffering; sickness and suicide, one must understand the cultural valuation of different ways of dying and the conditions under which suicides take place. To understand what it means to be a Vaqueiro is to understand how suicide can be perceived by a people as acceptable. A groundbreaking work in European ethnography, This World, Other Worlds takes symbolic analysis to a new level. In its illumination of local conceptions of death, grace, and sainthood, the book also makes a substantial contribution to the anthropology of religion.

Book excerpt: It was clear to Lance that his father hated him. Why else would he leave everything to Hank, except for that coin? You know, the one with some dude’s head on it, the ancient Euro or whatever it was. Except it wasn’t a Euro according to the pawnbroker. Turns out, it’s an old Imperial Coin from the days of the Great Emperor, and it might be worth a whole lot of dough on the other side of the galaxy, if Lance could somehow manage to take it there. But, how does a guy, who owes the hospital a lifetime’s worth of earnings, manage to travel across the stars? Turns out, he can do it for free. Not only that, but he can get three squares a day, an apartment complete with roommates, and two sets of clothes, albeit in spandex. It’s like prison, but with benefits. It’s SpaceForce. In the meantime, on the other side of the galaxy, Ailana is stuck next to her hated cousin, Embo in their grandmother’s sewing shop, forever listening to the old woman wax on about her glory days as a Royal Seamstress. No matter how she tries, Ailana can’t break free of Grandmother and her needling, even after the old woman is dead. However, it will be through her needle and thread, that Ailana gains admittance into the privileged world of the nobility, where fate will introduce her to a man that bears a striking resemblance to the face on Lance’s coin.

Book The Serpent and the Red Thread

Download or read book The Serpent and the Red Thread written by Diane Weber Bederman and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book, a documentary, about the oldest, most irrational evil: Jew hatred; told through the voices of Biblical and historical figures. Ms. Weber Bederman takes you on a journey through time, sharing the presence of history and our collective memories, beginning where all time begins: The Garden of Eden, where we meet the serpent who has in his mouth the red thread which he takes with him as it connects evil through time. Ms Weber Bederman has chosen to incorporate the Chinese literary device, the red thread, to connect the most evil of humankind, the Amaleks of history. The ones who spread irrational hate. All of the events are historical, factual, and sometimes shared through the stories of the characters: Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jesus, Paul and hitler. One need not be a student of the bible or history to follow the travels of the red thread woven by the serpent from the Garden to the present. The Red Thread of Evil has found yet another home in the hands of another group, the followers of the religion of Allah, who are intent on accomplishing what no other regime or culture had been able to do: to wipe the Jews off the face of the earth. Alarmingly, they have found many in the West who make themselves willing accomplices in the campaign of lies and distortions against Israel and the Jewish people elsewhere. This latter-day incarnation of Evil frequently finds accomplices among young people, uneducated and uninformed and easily taken in by extremist diatribes. That is why it is so important that this small volume with its treasure of information presented in a readable, even gripping narrative is placed into the hands of a wider public, but most especially impressionable youths in universities and high schools. A timely document that will enlighten those who are receptive to thought and the truth.
