Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidences of the Genuineness of the Gospels, Vol. 1 It is my purpose next to show the strong con firmation of the more direct historical evidence af forded by the manner in which the Gospels were regarded by the early Gnostic heretics; a field which, though not untrodden, has been unexplored and then to proceed to the collateral evidence for the genuineness of the Gospels, to be derived from their character and contents. But it may be oh served that this volume is, in its nature, an inde pendent work, and might have been so published, had no others been intended to follow. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidences of the Genuineness of the Gospels, Vol. 2 In order to understand the nature and value of this evidence, it is necessary to be acquainted with the history and doctrines of the Gnostics, and the relation in which they stood to the catholic Chris tians. But this subject is one of very considerable difficulty. The Gnostics have hung like a dark cloud round the early history of Christianity. Such accounts have been given of them as to make their existence appear something strange and inexplicable. The obscurity thus spread over the early history of our religion has afforded Opportunity for surmises and objections unfavorable to its truth. Whatever may tend to dispel it, and to let in a clearer light on the circumstances accompanying the reception of Christianity in the Gentile world, may tend equally to strengthen our assurance of the reality of what is recorded in the Gospels. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Internal Evidences of the Genuineness of the Gospels, Vol. 1 The work which forms the First Part of this volume was mostly written in the years 1847 and 1848, and, after its completion, was laid aside for future revision. In 1849 a severe attack of illness left the strength of its author so diminished, that, for a considerable period, his pursuits were interrupted, and when he again became able to work he devoted himself, in the near prospect of the end of life, to more important labors than that of revising what he had written. At the time of his death, in 1853, the work was in the state in which it now appears; but the manuscript bore many notes in pencil upon passages which it had been in the mind of the author to alter or enlarge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidences of the Genuinesness of the Gospels The present edition of "The Evidences of the Genuineness of the Gospels" contains the whole of the original work, with the exception of such portions as might be omitted without essential injury to the force of its main argument. The omissions chiefly consist of passages addressed rather to the scholar than to the general reader; and they have been the more readily made, from the belief that any student who might be desirous of following the author in his investigation of the subject in its more obscure, collateral developments, might, without much difficulty, obtain a copy of the work in its original form. For the information of the reader, a list of the principal omissions is hereto appended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on the Authenticity of the Gospels To which other evidence is subjected in human tribunals. Professor Greenleaf entertained the opinion, that, in subjecting the testimony of the sacred writers to these tests, one of the strongest foundations of Christian faith could be laid, and one that would be eminently satisfactory to men who are trained in habits of severe logic by the actual character of their daily avocations. In this he was not Singular. Mr. Justice Story of the Supreme Court of the United States, and before him Mr. Chief Justice Parsons of Mas sachusetts, used to express themselves strongly in the same direction. Indeed, the veneration of judges and lawyers for the legal rules of evidence not seldom renders them skeptical of any facts that cannot be established according to those rules; and they sometimes apply them to subjects where they are really an obstruc tion rather than an aid In the establishment of truth. Book The Authenticity of the Four Gospels Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Authenticity of the Four Gospels Classic Reprint written by Henry Wace and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Authenticity of the Four Gospels The evidence furnished by the opening passage of the Acts of the Apostles to the authorship of the third Gospel, the internal evidence of the Acts to the personality of the author and the various circumstances which identify him as St. Luke are pointed out. The medical language which permeates both the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles is shown to confirm this conclusion. The admissions of M. Renan with reference to St. Luke's authorship of the books are adduced, and the value of them as embodying the conclusions of a hostile witness is indicated. St. Luke is shown to have had ample opportunities of instituting inquiries into the truth of the facts which he records, and a comparison between him and Tacitus as historians in this respect is instituted. The establishment of the authenticity of St. Luke's writings is shown to obviate practically the objections to the other three Gospels. Those Gospels are proved however to rest on sufficient evidence. The value of M. Renan's conclusions as invalidating the force of the objections of sceptical criticism is pointed out, and the admissions of distinguished negative critics are quoted with reference to their fundamental objection to the authenticity of the Gospels, namely, the fact that the writers record supernatural events.
