Data were obtained in the energy range from 47 keV to 20 MeV for 11 elements in the range of light-mass fission products. Previously reported measurements for eight heavy and actinide isotopes were extended to 20 MeV. Data were also obtained for Cu (47 keV to 1.4 MeV) and for Sc, Zn, Nd, Hf, and Pt (1.8 to 20 MeV). The present work is part of a continuing effort to provide accurate neutron total cross sections for evaluations and for optical-model parameteriztions. The latter are required for the derivation of other nuclear-data information of importance to applied programs. 37 references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memo describes an evaluation of the 232Th neutron capture cross section in the neutron energy range from 3 keV to 20 MeV. Most existing differential measurements are reviewed, and some data are renormalized to current values of the standards. Several experimentally determined sets of average resonance parameters are also discussed. From 3 to 50 keV the evaluated cross section is described by a set of average statistical resonance parameters. Above 50 keV the evaluated capture cross section is a smooth curve which follows the trend of the most recent measurements. The evaluated capture cross section is compared with many measurements and uncertainty estimates are given.

Book excerpt: Broad-resolution total neutron cross sections of carbon, iron and titanium are measured with varying sample thicknesses from approximately 1 to 4 MeV. Energy-averaged cross sections are deduced to accuracies of approximately less than 1%. The carbon values are consistent with previously reported precision measurements. The measured energy-averaged iron and titanium values are larger than the calculated energy average of some previously reported higher resolution measured and evaluated cross sections by as much as 10%. These differences may be indicative of a physical phenomenon which has implications on the design of fast-reactor systems.

Book excerpt: An evaluation of the n + 242Pu cross sections is presented for the neutron energy range of 10 keV to 20 MeV. The total fission and radiative capture cross sections are based upon experimental measurements on 242Pu. The remaining cross sections, together with the elastic and inelastic angular distributions to low-lying states, were calculated using various reaction models. An expression is presented for the energy dependence of the average number of neutrons produced per fission. The results were placed in ENDF/B-V format and combined with a recent evaluation of data below 10 keV by the Hanford Engineering Development Laboratory, so that a complete data set covering the energy range of 10−5 eV to 20 MeV is available. 41 references. The cross sections of both elements show fluctuations with widths of the order of 10 keV. For sulfur, the properties of the fluctuations are in good agreement with predictions based on the statistical variations of the compound nuclear levels. For iron, the measured amplitudes are somewhat lower than the predictions. (Author).
