Book The Evaluation of Lithium Hydride for Use in a Space Nuclear Reactor Shield Including a Historical Perspective

Download or read book The Evaluation of Lithium Hydride for Use in a Space Nuclear Reactor Shield Including a Historical Perspective written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LiH was one of the five primary shield materials the NRPCT intended to develop (along with beryllium, boron carbide, tungsten, and water) for potential Prometheus application. It was also anticipated that 1°B metal would be investigated for feasibility at a low level of effort. LiH historically has been selected as a low mass, neutron absorption material for space shields (Systems for Nuclear Auxiliary Power (SNAP), Topaz, SP-100). Initial NRPCT investigations did not produce convincing evidence that LiH was desirable or feasible for a Prometheus mission due to material property issues (primarily swelling and hydrogen cover gas containment), and related thermal design complexity. Furthermore, if mass limits allowed, an option to avoid use of LiH was being contemplated to lower development costs and associated risks. However, LiH remains theoretically the most efficient neutron shield material per unit mass, and, with sufficient testing and development, could be an optimal material choice for future flights.

Book Radiation Damage Study on the Lithium Hydride SNAP Shield

Download or read book Radiation Damage Study on the Lithium Hydride SNAP Shield written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation damage may occur to the lithium hydride shields as a result of the reaction Li[sup 6](n, [alpha])H[sup 3]. There is evidence in the literature indicating both the existence and absence of radiation damage to the SNAP shields. It is believed that there is a high probability that there will be damage and that it will adversely affect the properties of the shield. This damage may take the form of: (1) volume expansion of the hybrids, (2) void formation within the hybrids, and (3) gas pressure build-up in the shield container. Based upon the results of experiments with lithium fluoride, which may serve as a model for the hydride, there appears to be a threshold neutron dose which volume expansion effects can not be removed by annealing. Similarly, above the threshold dose, intercrystalline voids, formed as a result of radiation damage, appear to increase in size with increasing temperature. It has been established that at the SNAP shield operating conditions, essentially all of the hydrogen formed will recombine with free lithium. The helium atoms, however, remain trapped interstitially, in intercrystalline voids, or along subgrain boundaries. Appreciable amounts of helium gas are not released until the melting point of the hydride is approached. An insignificant portion of the hydrogen in the shield is lost by permeation of the stainless steel shield container at the SNAP 10 operating conditions. 23 refs.

Book Nuclear Science Abstracts

Download or read book Nuclear Science Abstracts written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 1040 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.

Book Elucidation of Environmental Influences on the Initiation of Lithium Hydride Hydrolysis

Download or read book Elucidation of Environmental Influences on the Initiation of Lithium Hydride Hydrolysis written by Roy P. Awbery and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lithium hydride (LiH) is an important material used in the manufacture of nuclear warheads, space vehicle radiation shielding and as a constituent in modern batteries and potential future vehicular fuel cells. In all of these applications, LiH is generally contained within a sealed metal vessel and due to its high affinity with water vapour is handled under dry gas conditions. Despite storing and handling in dry conditions it is almost impossible to maintain LiH in a pure state with water vapour of just 1 ppm being sufficient to provide a measurable surface coating of hydrolysis product. The aim of this study was to use both surface and bulk analytical techniques to investigate the hydrolysis of LiH under specific conditions of water vapour exposure.

Book Priorities in Space Science Enabled by Nuclear Power and Propulsion

Download or read book Priorities in Space Science Enabled by Nuclear Power and Propulsion written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-03-20 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, NASA began an R&D effort to develop nuclear power and propulsion systems for solar system exploration. This activity, renamed Project Prometheus in 2004, was initiated because of the inherent limitations in photovoltaic and chemical propulsion systems in reaching many solar system objectives. To help determine appropriate missions for a nuclear power and propulsion capability, NASA asked the NRC for an independent assessment of potentially highly meritorious missions that may be enabled if space nuclear systems became operational. This report provides a series of space science objectives and missions that could be so enabled in the period beyond 2015 in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics, solar system exploration, and solar and space physics. It is based on but does not reprioritize the findings of previous NRC decadal surveys in those three areas.
