The German nation of 80 million people must overcome the difficulties of rapid unification if it is to fulfil its potential, and the immediate problems of absorbing 16 million East Germans into the European Community are being watched and analyzed with great care. The success or failure of the unification will be felt by all the key players both economically and politically, and the experiences gained from managing such radical changes are seen as models, particularly by the emerging democracies of Eastern Europe. Accordingly, German experience, finance and technology have a central role to play in the reshaping of Europe, and the decisions and actions made now will bring about great changes with far-reaching consequences in the structure of both the EC and Europe as a whole as the 21st century approaches.

Book excerpt: Relying on internal sources, Wilfried Loth analyses the birth and subsequent development of the European Union, from the launch of the Council of Europe and the Schuman Declaration until the Euro crisis and the contested European presidential election of Jean-Claude Juncker. This book shines a light on the crises of the European integration, such as the failure of the European Defence Community, De Gaulle’s empty chair policy, or the rejection of the European Constitution in France and the Netherlands, but also highlights the indubitable successes that are the Franco-German reconciliation, the establishment of the European common market, and the establishment of an expanding common currency. What this study accomplishes, for the first time, is to illuminate the driving forces behind the European integration process and how it changed European politics and society. “An enlightening work. Arequired reading for all who doubt the unfinished history of Europe.” – Rolf Steininger, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “This book will become an indispensable standard work.” – Jörg Himmelreich, Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Book Germany Europe and the Persistence of Nations

Download or read book Germany Europe and the Persistence of Nations written by Stephen Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1998, this book is an articulate and densely documented account of political, cultural and historical forces and tensions involved in contemporary European integration; most especially concerning Germany. In doing so it provides an effective fusion of a vast array of material from what are normally separate disciplines. The book investigates contemporary resonances of identifications and conceptions of political boundaries that appeared in Europe in the late eighteenth and nineteenth century. It argues that within a ‘supranationalising’ Europe, national identity and nationalism have not disappeared as cultural and political phenomena. Rather they persist and manifest themselves in variable forms at popular and elite levels. This is the basis for Europe’s condition of far from completed unity, at the centre of which is now a reunited Germany, more sure of itself but less sure of the world around it.
