Book excerpt: We have already had a taste of Danish culture via NOMA, recognised as the best restaurant in the world for two years running by the UK's Restaurants magazine for putting Nordic cuisine back on the map. Though merely whetting our appetites, this taster has confirmed Denmark's influential contribution to our continent's cultural wealth. Happily, Denmark's contribution to the European Union is far more extensive and will, undoubtedly, be in the spotlight throughout the first half of 2012! A modern state, where European and international sea routes converge, Denmark has frequently drawn on its talents and flourishing economy to make its own, distinctive mark. It is in tune with the priorities for 2020: competitiveness, social inclusion and the need for ecologically sustainable change. The Danish economy has also followed a successful recipe, combining the flexibility needed to adapt to globalisation, in particular through its exports, with the preservation of a model based on social cohesion. If international surveys are to be believed, this has made it the happiest country in the world.

Book Decision making in the European Community

Download or read book Decision making in the European Community written by Emil Joseph Kirchner and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first major assessment of EC decision-making at the highest levels for ten years, Emil Kirchner examines the Council Presidency's role in European integration. The author demonstrates how the EC Council Presidency plays a crucial role in the integration process enhanced by the Single European Act and the two Intergovernmental Conferences on EMU and Political Union. He evaluates the balance and distribution of power between national and Community actors, and asks whether the Council Presidency is primarily an instrument to maintain national control of EC decision-making, rather than a device for promoting integration. He sheds light on the negotiations which led to the SEA and the two Intergovernmental Conferences, and argues for a new interpretation of the relationship between the EC and its constituent states. EC decision-making is not characterised by a transfer of powers from the national to the EC level, but by a sharing of competences between national and Community institutions and a 'pooling of sovereignties' among member governments that is analogous to 'co-operative federalism'. Decision-making in the European Community will be vital reading for political scientists and students interested in the EC; and for all those seeking to understand European integration, potentially the 1990s' most important political development.

But even if you don't live there, don't do business there, and will never travel there, you are closer to the Arctic than you think. Arctic Matters: The Global Connection to Changes in the Arctic is a new educational resource produced by the Polar Research Board of the National Research Council (NRC). It draws upon a large collection of peer-reviewed NRC reports and other national and international reports to provide a brief, reader-friendly primer on the complex ways in which the changes currently affecting the Arctic and its diverse people, resources, and environment can, in turn, affect the entire globe. Topics in the booklet include how climate changes currently underway in the Arctic are a driver for global sea-level rise, offer new prospects for natural resource extraction, and have rippling effects through the world's weather, climate, food supply and economy.
