Book excerpt: Excerpt from European Corn Borer Investigations: Experiments With Insecticides on Early Sweet Corn This is a progress report of investigations that are not complete in all phases. The preparations employed were largely experimental, designed for use against the European corn borer, and had not been used previously in field experiments. Several of the preparations obviously lack physical properties that are highly desirable in corn borer insecticides, but some of these materials may Show considerable improvement with further develop mental research. This is particularly true Oi some of the preparations Of fixed nicotine. Preparations of derris, phenothiazine, and nicotine tannate in spray form and a dual-fixed nicotine dust provide sufficient reduction in borer populations to warrant their use in field tests to ascertain their value under commercial conditions and practice. Severe tests of weathering capacity and wash-resistance were imposed upon the materials used in these experiments. During the field experiments conducted in 1935, residues were subjected to frequent rains or light showers, and in 1936 they were again affected by the frequency and also the beavi ness of the rainfall. Download or read book Contemporary Insect Diagnostics written by Timothy J. Gibb and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Insect Diagnostics aids entomologists as they negotiate the expectations and potential dangers of the practice. It provides the reader with methods for networking with regulatory agencies, expert laboratories, first detectors, survey specialists, legal and health professionals, landscape managers, crop scouts, farmers and the lay public. This enables the practitioner and advanced student to understand and work within this network, critically important in a time when each submission takes on its own specific set of expectations and potential ramifications. Insect diagnosticians must be knowledgeable on pests that affect human health, stored foods, agriculture, structures, as well as human comfort and the enjoyment of life. The identification and protection of the environment and the non-target animals (especially beneficial insects) in that environment is also considered a part of insect diagnostics. Additionally, Integrated Pest Management recommendations must include any of a variety of management tactics if they are to be effective and sustainable. This greatly needed foundational information covers the current principles of applied insect diagnostics. It serves as a quick study for those who are called upon to provide diagnostics, as well as a helpful reference for those already in the trenches. - Includes useful case studies to teach specific points in insect diagnostics - Provides problem-solving guidance and recommendations for insect identification, threat potential, and management tactics, while accounting for the varying needs of the affected population or client - Contains numerous color photos that enhance both applicability and visual appeal, together with accompanying write-ups of the common pests
Download or read book Pests and Their Management written by Omkar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 1075 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively compiles information on some of the major pests that afflict agricultural, horticultural and medicinal crops in particular as well as many polyphagous pests. Not only does this book deal with the pests of common globally produced crops it also addresses those of rarely dealt with crops such as seed spices, medicinal and aromatic plants. While the perspective of insect pests is largely Indian and South East Asian in context, the book does deal with globally problematic pests, particularly polyphagous ones. Not only will the readers be acquainted with the pests, their damaging potential and their life cycle but also with the latest methods of managements including ecofriendly measures being employed to keep pest populations at manageable levels. The 27 chapters in the book, are grouped into four sections primarily based on crop types, viz. pest of agricultural, horticultural and medicinal crops, and polyphagous pests, making the book easy to navigate. Each of the chapters is comprehensive and well illustrated and written by academicians who have dedicated their entire lives to the study of a particular crop-pest complex. The final chapter of this book provides an overview on the principles and processes of pest management.

Download or read book Low Temperature Biology of Insects written by David L. Denlinger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low temperature is a major environmental constraint impacting the geographic distribution and seasonal activity patterns of insects. Written for academic researchers in environmental physiology and entomology, this book explores the physiological and molecular mechanisms that enable insects to cope with a cold environment and places these findings into an evolutionary and ecological context. An introductory chapter provides a primer on insect cold tolerance and subsequent chapters in the first section discuss the organismal, cellular and molecular responses that allow insects to survive in the cold despite their, at best, limited ability to regulate their own body temperature. The second section, highlighting the evolutionary and macrophysiological responses to low temperature, is especially relevant for understanding the impact of global climate change on insect systems. A final section translates the knowledge gained from the rest of the book into practical applications including cryopreservation and the augmentation of pest management strategies.
