Book excerpt: Excerpt from Investigations on the Control of the European Corn Borer When the eggs are deposited upon corn plants which have reached the tassel stage, the newly hatched larvae usually do not attack the tas'sel, nor do they feed to any extent upon the surface of the leaf blades; under these Circumstances they enter the stalk directly, or the thick midrib of the more tender leaf blades. If the plant has developed an ear, the newly hatched larvae frequently feed upon the tender tips of the husks and upon the silk, or work: their way down between the silks into the ear and feed upon the grain and cob. Book Plowing As a Control Measure for the European Corn Borer in Western New York Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plowing as a Control Measure for the European Corn Borer in Western New York During the fall of 1920 and the spring of 1921 the Bureau of Ento mology of the United States Department of Agriculture undertook a vigorous campaign of suppression against the European corn borer in an area of about 25 square miles in the vicinity of Silver Creek, N. Y. During the course of this experimental clean-up campaign many methods of control were tested thoroughly for the first time, such as steaming, crushing, shredding, cutting, burning, and burying infested material. F rom these tests it became evident that the burying of infested material, preferably by cultural operations, offered great possibilities and that the department would be warranted ln devoting considerable time and study to this means of control. Large quanti ties of infested material were buried in pits to a depth of 24 inches or more. Examination of the pits in the spring of 1921 resulted in the recovery of less than 1 per cent of the total number of larvae originally buried, and those recovered were dead and badly decomposed. Although this experimental method of burying larvae indicated that a 100 per cent kill resulted, it cou1d not be recommended as a practical control operation because of the labor involved. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from European Corn Borer Investigations: Experiments With Insecticides on Early Sweet Corn This is a progress report of investigations that are not complete in all phases. The preparations employed were largely experimental, designed for use against the European corn borer, and had not been used previously in field experiments. Several of the preparations obviously lack physical properties that are highly desirable in corn borer insecticides, but some of these materials may Show considerable improvement with further develop mental research. This is particularly true Oi some of the preparations Of fixed nicotine. Preparations of derris, phenothiazine, and nicotine tannate in spray form and a dual-fixed nicotine dust provide sufficient reduction in borer populations to warrant their use in field tests to ascertain their value under commercial conditions and practice. Severe tests of weathering capacity and wash-resistance were imposed upon the materials used in these experiments. During the field experiments conducted in 1935, residues were subjected to frequent rains or light showers, and in 1936 they were again affected by the frequency and also the beavi ness of the rainfall. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat and Time of Exposure Necessary to Kill Larvae of the European Corn Borer in Ear Corn The more important points brought out by these studies are dis cussed below. Cob and kernels offer a certain amount of insulation through which heat penetrates rather slowly, and the larvae in burrows in the center of the cob are consequently protected from the heat for a considerable period the duration of which depends on the constant temperature used. If ears of corn are heated in boxes, baskets, or like containers, or in piles, the air pockets throughout the mass serve as further insu lation, retarding the penetration of the heat. Ears should therefore be Spread one layer deep on trays having 1-incl1 chicken-wire screen ing as bottoms, and these trays should be arranged on racks in the heating chamber in such a way as to allow free circulation of air about the ears.
