Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of European Archaeology, Vol. 1 The primary purpose of the work before the reader is to provide a text-book for the students in the classes in Archaeology in University College, Dublin: and it is based upon the lectures in this subject given there from year to year. It is hoped that it will be of use to others who desire to study the subject. The book has grown considerably - far beyond the size originally planned - in the course of preparation: yet so wide is the field to be covered that it could probably have been made at least twice as large as it actually is. To exhaust the subject, even in the present limited state of knowledge, would be impossible: the author of a synthetic treatise must perforce make selections from the mass of materials at his disposal, and probably no two students would agree as to the selections that should be made. The writer can but plead that on this difficult question he has used his judgment to the best of his ability. One omission he greatly regrets: a description of the wonderful cave sanctuary called after its fortunate discoverers La Caverne des Trois Frères. Down to the moment of publication no printed account of this discovery had come into his hands (except a short notice in Abbe Mainage's work, mentioned below), and he feared to infringe the privilege of priority if he made any use of the descriptions with which he had been privately favoured. He also regrets that when writing of the human remains found at Solutre, he overlooked the work of Broca and of Hamy (published in B.S.A.P. 1873) as well as the remarks of Broca (A.F.A.S. 1873, summarised in Materiaux pour l'histoire de l'homme, vol. VIII [1873], p. 342); also Cartailhac's important review, in the same journal, of Arcelin's collection of all the materials relating to these disputed relics (Materiaux, XIII [1878], p. 527). Those who have wandered most in the maze of archaeological and anthropological literature will be the readiest to forgive these oversights. The definition of the word "henotheism" adopted in this work is that which has become current in treatises on Comparative Religion, though it differs in some degree from the significance attached to it by Max Müller, who introduced its use (see his Physical Religion, p. 181, especially the footnote). The lives of archaeologists are entangled with histories of museums and collections, developments in science and scholarship, and narratives of nationalism and colonialism into the present. In recent years life-writing has played an important role in the surge of new research in the history of archaeology, including ground-breaking studies of discipline formation, institutionalisation, and social and intellectual networks. Sources such as diaries, wills, film, and the growing body of digital records are powerful tools for highlighting the contributions of hitherto marginalised archaeological lives including many pioneering women, hired labourers and other ‘hidden hands’. This book brings together critical perspectives on life-writing in the history of archaeology from leading figures in the field. These include studies of archive formation and use, the concept of ‘dig-writing’ as a distinctive genre of archaeological creativity, and reviews of new sources for already well-known lives. Several chapters reflect on the experience of life-writing, review the historiography of the field, and assess the intellectual value and significance of life-writing as a genre. Together, they work to problematise underlying assumptions about this genre, foregrounding methodology, social theory, ethics and other practice-focused frameworks in conscious tension with previous practices.

It analyses national-socialist attempts to denationalize the archaeologies of European nations by creating a new unifying European archaeology on a racial basis. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, archaeology began to develop into an important force behind processes of nation building. At the same time, structures of transnational academic collaboration contributed strongly to the internal dynamics of the research field, which was primarily organized on a national basis. In those European countries that were confronted with national-socialist occupation and repression between 1939 and 1945, these transnational archaeological networks were to prove crucial for the development of national-socialist archaeological policies. This volume will reveal how national-socialist archaeology was to an extent valued positively in its time as highly innovative, even influencing the archaeology of non-occupied countries. Although in the final instance, it generally failed to displace the national archaeologies in Europe, the volume also analyses the long-term impact of national-socialist rule on the development of European archaeology. How did the attempts to create a unified European archaeology after 1945 continue to influence networks, methods and terminologies, institutional structures, or popular representations of the early past?

Book excerpt: Discusses new evidence of interactions between Scandinavia and Iberia during the Bronze Age and cross references warrior iconography in both societies. Recent research has uncovered new evidence of long-distance interactions between Scandinavia and Iberia during the Late Bronze Age. Advances in various lines of inquiry, such as 3D recording of rock art, iconography, metals and amber sourcing, linguistics, and, to some extent, more indirect indications from human remains, as reflected by strontium and aDNA results, have made this possible. The main goal of this book is to cross reference Iberian Late Bronze Age warrior iconography with Scandinavian warrior iconography. However, we will also account for links based on archeometallurgical evidence, linguistics, and other lines of inquiry, such as Baltic Amber, and metal artifacts. The results have been produced within the framework of the RAW project, an international undertaking funded by the Swedish Research Council. The RAW project is motivated by the discovery of isotopic and chemical evidence for Nordic Bronze Age artifacts made of copper that originated in the Iberian Peninsula. These findings led to re-opening two long known, but poorly explained, phenomena: 1) numerous shared motifs and close formal parallels in the rock art of Scandinavia and Iberian ‘warrior’ stelae, and 2) a large body of inherited words shared by the Celtic and Germanic languages, but not the other Indo-European branches. An integrated explanation for the three phenomena (Iberian metal in Scandinavia, parallels in Bronze Age rock carvings, and Celto-Germanic vocabulary) could now be formulated as a testable hypothesis: an episode in the Bronze Age when materials and ideas were exchanged over long distances between Scandinavia and the Atlantic West, including the Iberian Peninsula.
