Book The Euro Capital Market

Download or read book The Euro Capital Market written by Daniel Gros and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001-12-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors predict that the impact will be far-reaching, leading to a more liquid, mature and efficient capital market. The structure of capital markets in Europe and the behaviour of actors in these markets will be fundamentally affected, leading to a more integrated market. For monetary union to achieve its real objective, policy makers will need to address a wide variety of outstanding issues, in particular the taxation of savings income, accounting standards, capital market regulation and financial supervision. The start of monetary union on 1 January 1999 launched a process of radical change in the structure of capital markets in Europe. Whereas previously, Europe had been fragmented into many diverse national markets, a single Euro capital market is now emerging. This book focuses on the long-term impact that the introduction of the euro will have on European capital markets and spells out implications for the financial sector and the wider economy. It discusses what further steps need to be taken to achieve a fully integrated market. In particular, the book examines: * The institutional and regulatory framework for European capital markets * The structure of European capital markets on the eve of EMU * The regional differences and the contrasts with the US capital market * The central role played by banks in European capital markets and the likelihood that a more market-based system may emerge * The implications of EMU for organised securities markets * The consequences for governance and policy, and more in particular for the taxation of savings income, securities market regulation and financial supervision

Book excerpt: As time elapses since the introduction of the Euro, it is legitimate to start asking what impact the new currency and the single monetary policy have had on European integration. This book provides the most comprehensive review of financial integration in the euro area. The volume includes an introduction to the institutional features of the euro area and the literature on financial integration. It examines developments in the financial structures at large and moves forward to focus on specific areas pertaining to financial intermediaries, the bond and equity markets, and market-based debt finance. It is particularly suited to researchers and students of developments in the euro area, central banking, money and banking, as well as international relations and international business more generally. While the introductory chapters will help in bringing undergraduates on board, the later chapters will particularly benefit the early graduate student as well as the professional observer.

Book Integration of the Euro Equity Markets

Download or read book Integration of the Euro Equity Markets written by Manuela Croci and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In financial economics, co-movements between equity returns are generally interpreted as a measure of equity market integration. In line with this idea, this paper investigates whether the euro equity markets have become less segmented over the last decade referring to three different estimates of pair-correlations, i.e., unconditional correlations, ex-post rolling estimates of correlations and dynamic conditional correlations (DCC). The analysis shows that pair-correlations within the euro area have indeed increased, suggesting higher financial integration of the euro equity markets. Additionally, the paper addresses the related issue of which factors have driven this integration process. The finding is that the increase in integration is explained by the relaxation of restrictions to capital mobility and of institutional barriers and by the economic convergence in Europe, while Stage Three of EMU has not further boosted integration.

Book Equity Markets in Transition

Download or read book Equity Markets in Transition written by Reto Francioni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book underscores the complexity of the equity markets, the challenges they face, and the fact that they are still a work in process. Three interacting forces drive market change: competition, technology change, and regulatory change. The markets have one major objective in particular to achieve: the delivery of accurate price discovery for both traders and the broader market. Are we getting it? Are competition, technology, and regulation acting together to improve market quality, or are they adding to the complexity of the markets and making accurate price discovery harder to achieve? The difficulty of addressing these issues and reaching a consensus regarding public policy is reflected in the diverse opinions expressed in this book. From an institutional perspective, the volume’s contributors highlight the interconnectedness of all aspects of the internal and external environment within which exchange organizations act. Equity Markets in Transition underscores how technological evolution and recent regulatory changes have influenced the business, and how these developments have opened new possibilities for exchange organizations and for equity markets as a whole, including such issues as the impact of equity markets on job creation. The book combines both a theoretical and a practical approach. Part I presents a theoretical overview of the international equity market business, including an overall description of the value chain of stock trading that includes deep dives on every decisive step. Part II contains contributions from various business specialists who have specific practical and academic knowledge of the different steps. Equity Markets in Transition represents a unique combination of theoretical and practical analysis that offers first-hand insights on all relevant interactions and interrelations among the various parts of the exchange business, with an emphasis on facilitating analysis of the status quo and of emerging trends regarding business models, regulation, and the development of the competitor, customer and investor sides.

Book European Financial Markets

Download or read book European Financial Markets written by Tony Southall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EU membership involves political and economic reforms which influence financial markets in the new member states. This study empirically explores and quantifies the effects of EU accession on the risk and return of equity markets in eight Central and Eastern European markets joining the EU in 2004. The study also incorporates a review of how the influence of macroeconomic variables and the level of integration with global and European markets change as a result of EU membership. Based on empirical tests using weekly data over ten years, this study concludes that EU membership results in a significant decline in equity market volatility and a significant increase in risk-adjusted, but not absolute, equity returns. Furthermore, the study suggests that equity markets in new EU member states become increasingly influenced by global rather than local macroeconomic factors after the EU accession and that the level of integration with global markets increases.

Book The Origins of Europe s New Stock Markets

Download or read book The Origins of Europe s New Stock Markets written by Elliot Posner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1995 and 2007, financial elites in more than a dozen western European countries engaged in a cross-border battle to create some twenty new stock markets, many of which were explicitly modeled on the American Nasdaq. The resulting high-risk, high-reward markets facilitated wealth creation, rewarded venture capitalists, and drew major U.S. financial players to Europe. But they also chipped away at the European social compacts between national governments and citizens, opening the door of smaller company finance to the broad trend of marketization and its bounties, and further subjecting European households and family businesses to the rhythms of global capital. Elliot Posner explores the causes of Europe’s emergence as a global financial power, addressing classic and new questions about the origins of markets and their relationship to politics and bureaucracy. In doing so, he attributes the surprising large-scale transformation of Europe’s capital markets to the rise of the European Union as a global political force. The effect of Europe’s financial ascendance will have major ramifications around the world, and Posner’s analysis will push market participants, policymakers, and academics to rethink the sources of financial change in Europe and beyond.
