Book Ladies Book of Etiquette and Manual of Polit ness

Download or read book Ladies Book of Etiquette and Manual of Polit ness written by Florence Hartley and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1860 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do unto others as you would others should do to you. You can never be rude if you bear the rule always in mind, for what lady likes to be treated rudely? True Christian politeness will always be the result of an unselfish regard for the feelings of others, and though you may err in the ceremonious points of etiquette, you will never be im polite. Politeness, founded upon such a rule, becomes the expression, in graceful manner, of social virtues. The spirit of politeness consists in a certain attention to forms and ceremonies, which are meant both to please others and ourselves, and to make others pleased with us ;a still clearer definition may be given by saying that politeness is goodness of heart put into daily practice; the.re can be no true, politeness without kindness, purity, singleness of heart, and sensibility. Many believe that politeness is but a mask worn in the world to conceal bad passions and impulses, and to make a show of possessing virtues not really existing in the heart; thus, that politeness is merely hypocrisy and dissimulation. Do not believe this; be certain that those who profess such a doctrine are practising themselves the deceit they condemn so much.

Yet we could all do with a little help in perfecting our manners, self-confidence, and social graces for everyday living. English Etiquette details everything the English know about why etiquette matters, in a modern, understandable, and unpretentious way -- while teaching you how to cultivate a traditional and charming countenance to rival any royal. Covering topics such as gallantry and grace, common decency, lifestyle choices, the quintessential English wardrobe, and behaviour in the home, you will learn how to shoehorn a little English gentility from this practical field guide into your daily life. So pull your socks up ladies and gentlemen, pour yourself a cup of tea, and join The Darling Academy as we return to a culture of good manners, civility, and chivalry the world is longing for. A proper, polite, and graceful way of living is making a comeback. Long may it prevail."--Page 4 of cover.

Book It s Never Too Late to Learn Good Manners

Download or read book It s Never Too Late to Learn Good Manners written by Evelyn Jones and published by Page Publishing Incorporated. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Etiquette-the animated rainbow statue in the sky displaying the main ingredients to make our world not just a better place to live, but a desired place to share the love of God as we live together. The sky is the limit, through acts of respect, kindness, and integrity to redefine humanity as the pot of gold that will enrich our future. True essence to live life to the full is to be willing to learn when things are not working and when there needs to be a change for the better. Some changes do not make a difference in some cases. But I believe that proper etiquette conduct training is the difference-maker. The practical steps of etiquette training improve lives, and the benefits from such acts are the empowerment approved by God that is all good. The Bible tells us that all good things come from above. Etiquette puts you a cut above the rest. Its weapons are used to defeat evil, distorted acts of destruction, and ruthless self-gain. To overcome the fear of others, our neighbors, coworkers, and even our own family members will result as a form of respect. Common politeness has to become the common, opposed to uncommon motions. The awareness for etiquette conduct is, in essence, a vital necessity for our world now and for the future. Otherwise, human behavior continues to be the root of senseless killings and brutality. Etiquette will not stop all the criminal acts against civility. But even a small amount of prevention helps to promote a huge portion of cure. Rudeness is the worst sort of pollution. Not only does it darken and disfigure the view of what you see-it chokes the breath of human unity among ourselves and burns the eyes of visionary hope. Let's be kind and triumph over the deteriorating relationships of the next generation by exhibiting integrity in the commitment to treat all people with respect. Let kindness ring!

Book What Would Mary Ann Do

Download or read book What Would Mary Ann Do written by Dawn Wells and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-09-08 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So, what would Mary Ann do? As the sweet, polite, and thoughtful Mary Ann Summers from Kansas in the hit series Gilligan’s Island, Dawn Wells created an unforgettable and beloved character that still connects with people fifty years from the show’s debut in 1964. As the “good girl” among the group of castaways on a tiny island, she was often positioned against the glamorous and exotic Ginger Grant, played by Tina Louise, prompting many to ask: Are you a Ginger or a Mary Ann? This book not only helps readers answer that question for themselves but also sends the inspirational and heartwarming message that yes, good girls do finish first. Part self-help, part memoir, and part humor—with a little classic TV nostalgia for good measure—What Would Mary Ann Do? contains twelve chapters on everything from how Mary Ann would respond to changes in today’s culture to addressing issues confronting single women and mothers. Wells brings along her fellow characters from Gilligan’s Island to illustrate certain principles, such as incorporating the miserly Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus) in a discussion on money. Anecdotal sidebars also describe fascinating facts and compelling memories from the show, as well as some trivia questions to challenge fans and followers. Illustrated with photographs from Wells’s private collection, this book provides inspiring lessons from TV’s favorite good girl.

Book Taking Ethics Seriously

Download or read book Taking Ethics Seriously written by John Hooker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops an intellectual framework for analyzing ethical dilemmas that is both grounded in theory and versatile enough to deal rigorously with real-world issues. It sees ethics as a necessary foundation for the social infrastructure that makes modern life possible, much as engineering is a foundation for physical infrastructure. It is not wedded to any particular ethical philosophy but draws from several traditions to construct a unified and principled approach to ethical reasoning. Rather than follow the common academic practice of seeking a reflective equilibrium of moral intuitions and principles, it builds on a few bedrock principles of rational thought that serve as criteria for valid argumentation. It develops the ideas from the ground up, without presupposing any background in ethics or philosophy. Epistemologically, the book views ethics as parallel to mathematics, in that it relies on generally accepted proof techniques to establish results. Whereas mathematics rests on such proof paradigms as mathematical induction and proof by contradiction, ethics can be seen as relying on proof by applying consistency tests, such as generalizability and respect for autonomy. Utilitarianism also plays a key role, but it is reconceived as a deontological criterion. This approach obviously requires that these criteria be formulated more rigorously than is normally the case. To accomplish this, the book begins with the classical idea that an action is distinguishable from mere behavior by virtue of its having a coherent rationale, where coherence requires passing certain consistency tests such as generalizability. An action is therefore inseparable from its rationale, and generalizability is defined in terms of consistency with the rationale. A utilitarian criterion receives a similar treatment with respect to a means-end rationale. Respect for autonomy is grounded in a carefully developed action theory that takes into account such concepts as joint autonomy, implied consent, and the permissibility of interference with unethical behavior. It provides an account of responsibility that is both practical and theoretically satisfying, and it yields a novel solution of the much-discussed trolley car dilemmas. The book is written for a general audience and strives to be as readable and engaging as possible, while maintaining rigor. It begins by dispelling a raft of misconceptions that trivialize ethics and block its development as an essential tool of modern life, such as the notion that ethics is just a matter of opinion without rational foundation. After presenting the ethical principles just described, along with many examples, it provides several chapters that analyze real-life dilemmas, many obtained from the author’s students and professional workshop participants. One cannot understand physics or chemistry without seeing how their principles are applied to real problems, and the same is true of ethics. These chapters demonstrate that a unified normative theory can deal with a wide range of real cases while achieving a reasonable level of objectivity and rigor.
