Book Conrad s Shadow

Download or read book Conrad s Shadow written by Nidesh Lawtoo and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western thought has often dismissed shadows as fictional, but what if fictions reveal original truths? Drawing on an anti-Platonic tradition in critical theory, Lawtoo adopts ethical, anthropological, and philosophical lenses to offer new readings of Joseph Conrad’s novels and the postcolonial and cinematic works that respond to his oeuvre. He argues that Conrad’s fascination with doubles urges readers to reflect on the two sides of mimesis: one side is dark and pathological, and involves the escalation of violence, contagious epidemics, and catastrophic storms; the other side is luminous and therapeutic, and promotes communal survival, postcolonial reconciliation, and plastic adaptations to changing environments. Once joined, the two sides reveal Conrad as an author whose Janus-faced fictions are powerfully relevant to our contemporary world of global violence and environmental crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HEART OF DARKNESS By Joseph Conrad: An Profound Thought Provoking Novel In every culture and society we have intellectuals who try to curb bad elements. How can we as ordinary citizens do the same? The answer is through Art and Literature! Heart of Darkness of Joseph Conrad is such type of literature which retells the tale of Marlow who transports ivory along Congo. This novel reveals the saga behind colonization at the same time exploring the three tiers of veils of darkness which the protagonist, Marlow, goes through - the veil of the wilderness of Congo, the cruel treatment of the European to the natives, and the abysmal darkness within every one of us for committing atrocious acts of evil. This novel will make the readers feel the real emotions as the writer Joseph Conrad himself suffered the brutality of the European in Congo while working on the Congo River as a master of a steamboat. This is an unfathomed, thought provoking book which challenges the readers to question their own ethics, values and morals to 'The Horror' that the novel exposes them to.

Book Joseph Conrad and Postcritique

Download or read book Joseph Conrad and Postcritique written by Jay Parker and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-17 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a postcritical perspective on Joseph Conrad’s central texts, including Heart of Darkness, The Secret Agent, Under Western Eyes, and Lord Jim. Whereas critique is a form of reading that prioritizes suspicion, unmasking, and demystifying, postcritique ascribes positive value to the knowledge, affect, ethics, and politics that emerge from literature. The essays in this collection recognize the dark elements in Conrad’s fiction—deceit, vanity, avarice, lust, cynicism, and cruelty—yet they perceive hopefulness as well. Conrad’s skepticism unveils the dark heart of politics, and his critical heritage can feed our fear that humanity is incapable of improving. This Conrad is a well-known figure, but there is another, neglected Conrad that this book aims to bring to light, one who delves into the politics of hope as well as the politics of fear.
