Book The Ethics of Epicurus and its Relation to Contemporary Doctrines

Download or read book The Ethics of Epicurus and its Relation to Contemporary Doctrines written by Jean-Marie Guyau and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first English translation of a compelling and highly original reading of Epicurus by Jean-Marie Guyau. This book has long been recognized as one of the best and most concerted attempts to explore one of the most important, yet controversial ancient philosophers whose thought, Guyau claims, remains vital to modern and contemporary culture. Throughout the text we are introduced to the origins of the philosophy of pleasure in Ancient Greece, with Guyau clearly demonstrating how this idea persists through the history of philosophy and how it is an essential trait in the Western tradition. With an introduction by Keith Ansell-Pearson and Federico Testa, which contextualizes the work of Guyau within the canon of French thought, and notes on both further reading and on Epicurean scholarship more generally, this translation also acts as a critical introduction to the philosophy of Guyau and Epicurus.

Book excerpt: The philosophy of Epicurus (c. 341-271 B. C. E.), has been a quietly pervasive influence for more than two millennia. At present, when many long revered ideologies are proven empty, Epicureanism is powerfully and refreshingly relevant, offering a straightforward way of dealing with the issues of life and death. The chapters in this book provide a kaleidoscope of contemporary opinions about Epicurus' teachings. They tell us also about the archeological discoveries that promise to augment the scant remains we have of Epicurus's own writing. the breadth of this new work will be welcomed by those who value Epicurean philosophy as a scholarly and personal resource for contemporary life. "Epicurus: His Continuing Influence and Contemporary Relevance," is the title of a 2002 conference on Epicurus held at Rochester Institute of Technology, when many of the ideas here were first presented.

Book In Pursuit of Pleasure

Download or read book In Pursuit of Pleasure written by Epicurus and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek philosopher Epicurus defined philosophy as 'a daily business of speech and thought to secure happiness'. He believed happiness to be the goal of human life and thought it could be achieved by pursuing pleasure. However, the Epicurean philosophy was then and still is now often erroneously interpreted as promoting hedonism. Rather, Epicurus considered pleasure to be connected to virtue not excess or sensual self-indulgence. This volume contains Cyril Baileys masterly, classic translations of the most important surviving writing of Epicurus -- the Letter to Menoeceus, the Principal Doctrines and the Vatican Sayings -- and offers the contemporary reader a comprehensive overview of Epicurean ethics, his philosophy on what matters in life and how we should live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principal Doctrines - Epicurus - Translated by Robert Drew Hicks - Epicurus (341-270 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher as well as the founder of the school of philosophy called Epicureanism. Only a few fragments and letters of Epicurus's 300 written works remain. Much of what is known about Epicurean philosophy derives from later followers and commentators. For Epicurus, the purpose of philosophy was to attain the happy, tranquil life, characterized by ataraxia-peace and freedom from fear-and aponia-the absence of pain-and by living a self-sufficient life surrounded by friends. He taught that pleasure and pain are measures of what is good and evil; death is the end of both body and soul and should therefore not be feared; the gods neither reward nor punish humans; the universe is infinite and eternal; and events in the world are ultimately based on the motions and interactions of atoms moving in empty space.

Book The Essential Epicurus

Download or read book The Essential Epicurus written by Epicurus and published by Great Books in Philosophy. This book was released on 1993 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epicureanism is commonly regarded as the refined satisfaction of physical desires. As a philosophy, however, it also denoted the striving after an independent state of mind and body, imperturbability, and reliance on sensory data as the true basis of knowledge. Epicurus (ca. 341-271 B.C.) founded one of the most famous and influential philosophical schools of antiquity. In these remains of his vast output of scientific and ethical writings, we can trace Epicurus' views on atomism, physical sensation, duty, morality, the soul, and the nature of the gods.

Notably Epicurus's ethic of pleasure is the exact opposite of the Stoic's ethic of duty. The consequences, however, are the same: in the end, the Epicurean is asked to live with the same temperance and justice as the Stoic. The Principal Doctrines developed by Epicurus are one of the few surviving documents. This surviving original text is presented here. Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher as well as the founder of the school of philosophy called Epicureanism. Only a small selection of his written work survived to present day. Surviving texts include The Principle Doctrines and his letters.

Book excerpt: Principal Doctrines & Letter to Menoeceus by Epicurus and translated by Robert Drew Hicks. Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher who founded a school of philosophy now called Epicureanism. Only a few fragments and letters of Epicurus's 300 written works remain. Much of what is known about Epicurean philosophy derives from later followers and commentators. The "Principal Doctrines", also known as the "Sovran Maxims", are a collection of forty quotes from the writings of Epicurus that summarize his ethical theory. The "Letter to Menoeceus" summarizes his ethical doctrines. 'Let no one be slow to seek wisdom when he is young nor weary in the search thereof when he is grown old. For no age is too early or too late for the health of the soul. And to say that the season for studying philosophy has not yet come, or that it is past and gone, is like saying that the season for happiness is not yet or that it is now no more.'

Book Epicurus Ethical Theory

Download or read book Epicurus Ethical Theory written by Phillip Mitsis and published by . This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ethical theory of the Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-271 B.C.) is commonly taken to be narrowly egoistic, and there is ample evidence in his writings to support this view—for example, in his maxims on friendship, his emphasis on the utility of friends and his continual effort to link friendship and pleasure. By means of a comprehensive and penetrating examination of the main elements of Epicurean ethics Phillip Mitsis forces us to reevaluate this widely misunderstood figure in the history of philosophy. Measuring Epicurean doctrines against both their ancient and modern alternatives, Mitsis argues that Epicurus' hedonism, when properly understood in its original philosophical context, is a complex and significant ethical option. Mitsis shows that Epicurus perceived, and brought forward in his writings, a series of conflicts between rival, though individually well founded, claims. Epicurus was ultimately unable to resolve these conflicts, Mitsis says, and therefore the Epicurean "system" cannot be regarded as a consistent whole. Looking closely at the surviving ancient evidence, Mitsis reconstructs the wider theoretical framework of particular Epicurean arguments and proposes new interpretations of Epicurus' accounts of pleasure, human action and responsibility, the virtues, and altruism. Woven through the exposition and criticism of Epicurean positions are illuminating references to later moral philosophers, from Hobbes and Mill to contemporary figures.
