Book The Ethical Ideal of Renunciation a Thesis

Download or read book The Ethical Ideal of Renunciation a Thesis written by Cordie Jacob Culp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethical Ideal of Renunciation a Thesis The problem of renunciation arises in connection with the newer and more profound conception of the moral life, as it has been developed by modern writers. According to the traditional view, the ethical decision and moral choice had to do with one or other of the peculiar functions of consciousness, as feeling or intellect, sensibility or reason. Thus arose the dualism which occasioned the sharp conflict between Epicureanism and Stoicism, the ideal of the former being the enjoyment of life, while the latter made life a matter of obligation. This dualism persisted in modern thinking in the form of Hedonism on the one hand and Rationalism on the other with a constant conflict which served in time to reveal the inadequacy of either conception to meet the ethical demands of humanity. Hedonism possessed material and content in sensibility but lacked form and a regulating principle, while Rationalism had the form and regulating principle but lacked material and content. Consequently there was a search for a reconciling principle which would recognize the rights of both Hedonism and Rationalism. This search resulted in the conclusion that life must be conceived as an unit which took the form of Eudaemonism, where self-realization through the aesthetical impulse was the ideal, or Rigorism, where the religious influence was paramount. Both views apprehended life as a whole but where Eudaemonism counselled man to accept life, Rigorism demanded that he reject it. Therefore, the distinction which now obtains in the moral field, instead of forcing the ethical subject to choose between separate functions of consciousness, man is called upon to regard his life as an unity and upon this basis to either assert his life as a whole or deny it. Thus arises our problem of renunciation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: From the INTRODUCTION.The problem of renunciation arises in connection with the newer and more profound conception of the moral life, as it has been developed by modern writers. According to the traditional view, the ethical decision and moral choice had to do with one or other of the peculiar functions of consciousness, as feeling or intellect, sensibility or reason. Thus arises our problem of renunciation. For its proper consideration as an ethical ideal, its place in human thought and the forms in which it appears, it is necessary that this thesis be historical and expository with some critical estimate of renunciation as a problem in human life.

Book Dimensional of Renunciation in Advaita

Download or read book Dimensional of Renunciation in Advaita written by Kapil N. Tiwari and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1998-12-31 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this dissertation is to present a systematic exposition of renunciation (Samnyasa) as a philosophico-religious category within Indian tradition with special reference to Advaita Vedanta of Samkaracarya. The author tried to justify this category as a spiritual technique systematically worked out and developed by Advaitins particularly Samkara with a view to classifying and systematizing values in terms of the different forms which renunciation and its object may be found to assume. This dissertation also highlights principles of human behaviour in the Indian tradition implicitly clarifying thereby such concepts as dharma (socio-religious duties), the good life, obligation and responsibility etc.

Book A Theory of Virtue

Download or read book A Theory of Virtue written by Robert Merrihew Adams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinguished philosopher Robert M. Adams presents a major work on virtue, which is once again a central topic in ethical thought. A Theory of Virtue is a systematic, comprehensive framework for thinking about the moral evaluation of character. Many recent attempts to stake out a place in moral philosophy for this concern define virtue in terms of its benefits for the virtuous person or for human society more generally. In Part One of this book Adams presents anddefends a conception of virtue as intrinsic excellence of character, worth prizing for its own sake and not only for its benefits. In the other two parts he addresses two challenges to the ancient idea of excellence of character. One challenge arises from the importance of altruism in modern ethical thought, and the question of what altruism has to do with intrinsic excellence. Part Two argues that altruistic benevolence does indeed have a crucial place in excellence of character, but that moral virtue should also be expected to involve excellence in being for other goods besides the well-being (and the rights) of other persons. It explores relations among cultural goods, personal relationships, one's own good, and the good of others, as objects of excellent motives. The other challenge, the subject of Part Three of the book, is typified by doubts about the reality of moral virtue, arising from experiments and conclusions in social psychology. Adams explores in detail the prospects for an empirically realistic conception of excellence of character as an object of moral aspiration, endeavor, and education. He argues that such a conception will involve renunciation of the ancient thesis of the unity or mutual implication of all virtues, and acknowledgment ofsufficient 'moral luck' in the development of any individual's character to make virtue very largely a gift, rather than an individual achievement, though nonetheless excellent and admirable for that

Book Understanding Kant s Ethics

Download or read book Understanding Kant s Ethics written by Michael Cholbi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kant's ethical thought remains one of the most influential, yet notoriously challenging, systems in the history of philosophy. This volume provides a sympathetic but critical reconstruction of the main strands of Kant's ethics, focusing on the most commonly read of Kant's ethical works, the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. Part I outlines Kant's arguments in defense of his Categorical Imperative, as well as elaborating Kant's understanding of dignity and human freedom. Part II addresses the most common objections to Kant's ethics, including challenges to the Formula of Universal Law; Kant's controversial ethical stances on suicide, sex and marriage, and non-human animals; and the place of reason, sentiment, and happiness in Kant's ethics. For scholars and specialists alike, the volume offers a clear and accessible account of what Kantian morality both offers us and asks of us.

Book The Ethics of Sankara and Santideva

Download or read book The Ethics of Sankara and Santideva written by Warren Lee Todd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the philosophical concerns of the nature of self, this book draws from two of the most influential Indian masters, Śaṅkara and Śāntideva. Todd demonstrates that an ethics of altruism is still possible within a metaphysics which assumes there to be no independent self. A new ethical model based on the notions of ’flickering consciousness’ and ’constructive altruism’ is proposed. By comparing the metaphysics and ethics of Śaṅkara and Śāntideva, Todd shows that the methodologies and aims of these Buddhist and Hindu masters trace remarkably similar cross-cutting paths. Treating Buddhism and Hinduism with equal respect, this book compares and reinterprets the Indian material so as to engage with contemporary Western debates on self and to show that Indian philosophy is indeed a philosophy of dialogue.

Book Morality from Compassion

Download or read book Morality from Compassion written by Ingmar Persson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Arthur Schopenhauer, compassion is the basis of morality. He sees concern for justice as a negative form of compassion, directed at not harming anyone, as opposed to the more far-reaching, positive form of benefiting. He thinks a higher degree of compassion involves realizing that the spatio-temporal separation of individuals is illusory and that in reality they are all identical. Such compassion is impartial and all-encompassing. Compassion is suited to be the centre of morality because its object are negative feelings, and only these are real. Contrary to these Schopenhauerian claims, it is here argued that compassion must be supplemented with attitudes like sympathy and benevolence because positive feelings exist alongside negative feelings; that a concern for justice, though morally essential, is independent of these attitudes which are based on empathy; that these attitudes involve not identifying oneself with others, but taking personal identity as insignificant in empathically imagining how others feel. Schopenhauer is however right that, though these attitudes are spontaneously partial, this can be corrected. His morality is also interesting in raising the question rarely discussed in philosophical ethics of how moral virtue relates to ascetic self-renunciation. Both of these ideals are highly demanding, but the book ends by arguing that this is no objection to their validity.
