Book The Eternal Tao Te Ching

Download or read book The Eternal Tao Te Ching written by Benjamin Hoff and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of The Tao of Pooh offers a uniquely authentic translation of the enduring Tao Te Ching, based on the meanings of the ancient Chinese characters in use when the Taoist classic was written. From Benjamin Hoff, author of The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet, which have sold millions of copies worldwide, comes The Eternal Tao Te Ching, a new translation of the Chinese philosophical classic, the Tao Te Ching. The Eternal Tao Te Ching is the first translation to employ the meanings of the pre-writing brush characters in use 2,400 years ago, when the classic was written, rather than relying on the often-different meanings of the more modern brush characters, as other translations have done. Hoff points out in his chapter notes the many incidents of meddling and muddling that have been made over the centuries by scholars and copyists, and he corrects the mistakes and removes such tampering from the text. Hoff also makes the provocative claim—and demonstrates by revealing clues in the text—that the Tao Te Ching’s author was a young nobleman hiding his identity, rather than the long-alleged author, the “Old Master” of legend, Lao-tzu. And Hoff’s chapter notes shed new light on the author’s surprisingly modern viewpoint. With a selection of lyrical color landscape photographs by the author, this is a unique, and uniquely accessible, presentation of the Tao Te Ching.

Book excerpt: 'Of ways you may speak, but not the Perennial Way; By names you may name, but not the Perennial Name.' The best-loved of all the classical books of China and the most universally popular, the Daodejing or Classic of the Way and Life-Force is a work that defies definition. It encapsulates the main tenets of Daoism, and upholds a way of being as well as a philosophy and a religion. The dominant image is of the Way, the mysterious path through the whole cosmos modelled on the great Silver River or Milky Way that traverses the heavens. A life-giving stream, the Way gives rise to all things and holds them in her motherly embrace. It enables the individual, and society as a whole, to harmonize the disparate demands of daily life and achieve a more profound level of understanding. This new translation draws on the latest archaeological finds and brings out the word play and poetry of the original. Simple commentary accompanies the text, and the introduction provides further historical and interpretative context. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book excerpt: The writing of the stories in this book has been my life raft in the biggest storm of my life. A storm that may very well have pulled me under without my journey into the past keeping me on an even keel. This book has so many things written into each story. They are written with love and some of the happiest memories of the past that I can ever begin to recall. Some with sadness for what once was but will never to be again. I relate to the people that have read my stories in the small town news paper of which they have been published, because I am one of them. I cannot tell you how many people have told me how the things I have written have also flooded their heart and souls with memories they thought were long since forgotten. I am also in the process of writing a novel titled The Good Old Boys Club, Corruption in Small Town America. I am hoping to have it completed by the end of 2007. I am presently compiling another book of the Legacy Of Love stories. One half of those stories will have appeared in the paper and the other half will not have been read until the book is published. I think every one deserves a surprise.

Download or read book Reading Lao Tzu written by Ha Poong Kim and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Lao Tzu is a commentary on the Tao Te Ching with a new translation. It is intended for the general reader. The Tao Te Ching is by far the shortest and yet the most difficult of all Chinese classics. For that reason, in the East it has rarely been read without the help of a commentary. In my commentary I present Lao Tzu's meaning passage by passage and as directly as possible, avoiding any scholarly discussion. However, notes are included separately in support of my interpretation, especially when the passage in question is controversial, or when I depart from a traditional reading. My translation includes a new rendition of a number of key passages. In place of summary statements, I give here sample chapters. (Please keep in mind that some of these chapters presuppose earlier discussions that are not included in this selection. All notes are omitted.)

Book The Spiritual Philosophy of the Tao Te Ching

Download or read book The Spiritual Philosophy of the Tao Te Ching written by Joseph A. Magno and published by Pendragon Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spiritual Philosophy of the Tao Te Ching argues two main points: (1) the Tao Te Ching is a spiritual (not religious) book, and (2) it presents an implicit systematic philosophy. If we piece together the Tao's implicit and explicit views, we'll find it offers a consistently reasoned answer to life's three ultimate questions, the origin, nature, and purpose of life. Based on its answer to these questions, it offers a philosophy of life the prime goal of which is reunion with the Tao.
