Download or read book The Historical and the Eternal Christ Classic Reprint written by W. S. Urquhart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical and the Eternal Christ This short discussion of the relation of Christianity to its historical basis originally formed one of a series of lectures delivered in the Scottish Churches College, Calcutta, and intended for an educated Indian audience. I should not have entertained the idea of publishing the lecture in its present form, had it not been for the urgency of a Bengali friend, Mr. G. C. Ghosh, of Calcutta, who also generously insisted on defraying any expenses incurred in publication. I desire to ofi'er my sincerest thanks to Mr. Ghosh for his kindness, and to express the hope that the thoughts here presented may be of some slight use to any who are reflecting upon a problem of such vital importance for the Christian faith. Book Christ and the Eternal Order Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christ and the Eternal Order Classic Reprint written by John Wright Buckham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ and the Eternal Order Almost from boyhood the writer has been concerned in finding a mental setting for Jesus Christ. Sometimes it has been a disturbing, but more often a stimulating, problem. The problem arose apparently from the absorption of his earlier religious life in God as Presence and Father, and the difficulty in finding such a place beside him for Christ as the Bible and the Church seemed to require. For a time the words, "Believe in God, believe also in me," afforded temporary standing-room. The first clear light on the intellectual problem came, after entering the ministry, through reading Frederick Denison Maurice's Theological Essays, in connection with the words in Colossians, "Christ in you, the hope of glory." The result was a great illumination of mind and uplift of heart. The difficulty of accounting for Christ in the contrasted aspects of his historical limitation and his universal significance largely disappeared. The conclusions reached were presented in an article entitled "The Indwelling Christ," published in The Andover Review for August, 1891, and met with a very warm response. The substance of this article is included in Chapter II, Part III of this volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Christian Life Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus, Concerning the Christian Life He was right. Some men do not give religion any place in their lives. They think they can do without it. They have other aims which they consider higher, or to which they give more care ful attention. Others seek religion and hold it in esteem, but they do not make it the principal thing. They think more of something else. Religion has a place in their lives, as they suppose, but it is a low place, an Obscure corner. It does not come to the front. But those who give religion no place or a low place in their lives not only act contrary to their own reason and higher impulses, but they violate the Whole spirit of revelation, and especially the definite and repeated teachings and commands and expostula tions of Jesus. Book The Greater Life and Work of Christ

Download or read book The Greater Life and Work of Christ written by Alexander Patterson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greater Life and Work of Christ: As Revealed in Scripture, Man, and Nature It will be seen at a glance that this is not a life of Christ in the usual sense. It is not a review of the events of the earthly existence of our Lord. There is a greater life and a larger work of Christ of which his life on earth is but a single chapter. While no apology is needed for any publication of the great theme of the gospel, it may be stated that there is a special reason for such a book as this. The author has examined many works on Christ and lists of hundreds more, and has conferred with competent literary authorities, and has learned of few works, if any, covering this greater life and work of Christ. Such a study of Christ should be available. The author presents this, hoping it may in some measure supply the need, and lead to further presentation of this great theme by more competent students. There are still greater and more vital reasons for such a review of Christ. The Eternal Christ is the theme of Scripture, and not the Christ of the gospels simply. Until this is seen, the Bible will be an enigma. The study of the Bible should therefore begin with him who is its Alpha as well as its Omega. This book is a study of Scripture from this standpoint. It covers the whole Bible narrative, not in an attempt to mention all details, but only the great personages, events, and crises in which the person and work of Christ are seen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Our Blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ That which shines brightest presents itself first to the eye; and the devout soul, in the chain of excel lent and precious things, which are represented in the counsel, design, and first beginnings of the work of our redemption, hath not leisure to attend to the twinkling of the lesser stars, till it hath stood and admired the glory and eminences of the Divine love, manifested in the incarnation of the Word eternal. God had no necessity, in order to the conservation or the heightening his own felicity, but out of mere and perfect charity, and the bowels of compassion, sent into the world his 'only Son, for remedy to human miseries, to ennoble our nature by a union with Divinity, to sanctify it with his justice, to en rich it with his grace, to instruct it with his doc trine, to fortify it with his example, to rescue it from servitude, to assert it into the liberty of the sons of God, and at last to make it partaker of a beatifical resurrection. Download or read book Sermons on the Passion of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by John McQuirk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Passion of Jesus Christ We can never at all realize or even have any idea of the meaning of the great, the stupendous fact which the Church today commemorates, unless we know and keep before us, Who it is that suffers on the cross. Hence I begin our instruction with asking - Who is it that hangs, agonizing and suffering, on the hill of Calvary? It is Jesus Christ, at once God and Man, the Eternal Word and Wisdom Of the Godhead, the very Figure of His substance and the Splendor of His glory; He before Whom the worlds tremble and the Angels are not pure. It is He Who from the beginning was in the Father; in Whom and by Whom and through Whom all things have been made; the Second adorable Person of the Blessed Trinity, and no less. Let this truth sink deep into your souls; for without it Calvary has no meaning. If Christ were but a mere man, His Sacrifice would not be that which it claims to be, and which it is our hope and security and salvation that it is.
