Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Principles of Prose Composition There are many excellent people who think that all advice about composition is useless, - that a man has only to know his subject thoroughly, and the expression will come of itself. An English Dissenting minister recently hit upon a very simple way of making a book. He wrote letters to some hundreds Of English authors more or less recognised as competent practitioners of their art, saying that he had undertaken to give a series of lectures on composition to young men, and that he would be glad to have a few words Of advice. Writers are, as a rule, a generous race, and not un susceptible of flattery, and so many Of the eminent men answered the appeal of the ingenious applicant that he was able to make a very interesting book out Of their replies. The remarkable thing was that many of them, even some Of the most eminent, seemed to hold that the less people thought about the style Of their writing, the better they were likely to write. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theories of Style: With Especial Reference to Prose Composition; Essays, Excerpts, and Translations This volume, the editor imagines, may prove serviceable to teachers of English in more than one way. From its origin - and apart from the style of the editor's translations - it may be regarded first of all as a body of literary models to be used in illustration of some good handbook on English prose composition, by classes in what is technically known as Exposition, i.e. written explanation. The editor's conception of such a volume of models arose partly from his belief - which needs no discussion here - that of the three generally recognized Forms of Prose Writing, namely, Description, Narration, and Exposition, only Exposition can be advantageously taught as a practical art by the average instructor in English to the average class; partly from his objection to certain books of "standard" selections, which professed rhetoricians have seen fit to compile for similar purposes of illustration in the classroom. In his opinion these compilations suffer from one fairly obvious defect. As a rule, they seem to lack a fundamental principle which every teacher of thinking and writing is supposed to demand of every book, and to inculcate in the mind of every pupil. They seem lacking in unity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Structure of English Prose

Download or read book The Structure of English Prose written by John George Repplier McElroy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of English Prose: A Manual of Composition and Rhetoric The teacher of Rhetoric has a double office. First, and chiefly, he must make writers; secondly, he must so exhibit the laws of his art as to promote mental discipline. In other words, he must be practical, without being a mere empiricist; he must be rational, without for an instant losing sight of skill in composition. With these views in mind, I have tried to fill what seemed to me an empty place among books on Rhetoric. None of them, I thought, aimed at practical results, without sacrificing too far the principles of the art; none of them taught these principles in their fullness, without sacrificing in part or in whole the practical side of the work. I have aimed to strike the happy medium, - to make a book that shall teach composition while it forces the student to think, and shall exhibit the principles of the art at the same time that it keeps uppermost the problem How to Write. I have adopted Dr. Shedd's words quoted on my title-page, accepting fully the doctrine that Thought is more than Style, and modifying this doctrine by only one other truth - a truth to which Dr. Shedd would doubtless equally assent - that worthy thought deserves, as it promotes, an excellent form. This, by the way, is Herbert Spencer's opinion, too. Though he extols practice, he adds, "Never with the principles of style. If in no other way, yet, as facilitating revision, a knowledge of the thing to be achieved - a clear idea of what constitutes a beauty, and what a blemish - can not fail to be of service." I have also tried to exhibit the laws of Rhetoric in their entirety, - not the laws of Style alone, but also those of Invention. However we may quibble about that word Invention in its rhetorical sense, Rhetoric does teach other laws than those of Form; and these laws must be exhibited, if the art is to be taught fully. I admit freely that, in a book whose chief aim is skill in composition, Invention will occupy a considerably less number of pages than Style; and, hence, even after saying what I have said of the superior importance of Invention [ 32], I have given by far the greater portion of my whole space to Style. Download or read book Essentials of English Composition Classic Reprint written by Homer E. Woodbridge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English Composition Sir Philip Sidney says of the lawyer that "our wickedness maketh him necessary, and necessity maketh him honorable." Something of the kind, I suppose most teachers would agree, might be said of textbooks of composition. Whether or not necessity makes them honorable, our deficiencies make them necessary. The best teacher of composition I have known did not use a text-book; and if we could all teach like Dean Briggs, we might wisely make a bonfire of the books. As matters stand, however, they are generally regarded as a necessary evil. On another point, I believe, a majority of teachers would agree. Experience has shown, if it has shown anything, that the amount of rhetorical theory which most students can assimilate and put into practice is small. The average college freshman finds it extremely difficult to grasp even the simplest abstract idea; the most that we can reasonably hope is that he may be induced to lay firm hold upon a few basic principles. To multiply abstractions and distinctions is to confuse him hopelessly. If the study of rhetorical theory in the freshman course were an end in itself, we might still, for the sake of the best students, be justified in presenting it elaborately and in detail. But it is not an end in itself; it is admittedly ancillary to correct and clear writing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Essentials of Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Essentials of Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint written by A. Howry Espenshade and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Composition and Rhetoric In this book the author has endeavored to present a clear and comprehensible discussion of the essentials of Rhetoric and English Composition, and to furnish the student with suitable constructive and critical exercises. The statement of rhetorical principles as set forth in the text and the exercises placed at the end of each chapter have been the outgrowth of nine years' experience in the teaching of high school and college students. The book is especially designed to furnish a practical course for pupils in the high school and for freshmen in college. Neither the text nor the exercises, it is believed, will be found too difficult for the high school student or too elementary for the average college freshman. Such a course of instruction as is embodied in this book should form part of the training of every young man and woman. In three respects this book is different from most other books on Composition and Rhetoric. First, it is written from the practical rather than the literary point of view. The author has constantly aimed to put himself in the place of the teacher, who must explain the principles of composition so clearly that the average student can understand them, and so convincingly that he cannot help seeing their practical value. The author has not imagined himself to be a literary man addressing a literary audience, nor has he taken it for granted that the students who use this book are going to produce literature.
