Under the last head fall especially chaps. I and ii of Book I, and chap. Vi of Book II. Of the last-named chapter, part, particularly 132, contains an analysis which is, I think, new and interesting. I have added an English trans lation of the Examples in almost the whole of the Syntax. It Will be found that in some cases I have given the ordinary English equivalent, whilst in others I have aimed rather at explaining the Latin construction. Three Appendices are new, viz. Those on Metre, on Grammatical and Rhetorical terms, and on Latin authors. Some changes in arrangement have been made (e. G. As regards degrees of comparison, and Numerals) to suit ordinary usage. The Index has been made fuller than is usual m a book of this class - so full, that it may not be unimportant to observe that the book is really intended not for reference, but for study: The lists are not exhaustive, the statements of occur rence or non-occurrence of forms or expressions must not be taken too literally, but only as approximations to the truth, with especial regard to the classical authors and' usages of recognized authority in schools and many of the rarer usages are not noticed at all, but left to be picked up in the student's own reading, or obtained, when needed, from a dictionary. There is an obvious advantage to the student in using the same grammar throughout his Latin course. The needs of the student have been made the guiding principle in the treatment of the examples. Portions of it were drawn up some years ago for the use of my own classes; the success that has followed the use of them has led to the completion of the lacking portions and the publication of the whole. The objects kept in view in compiling the book were two: without omitting essentials, to make a book small enough to be mastered by a beginner, and to arrange the principles of grammar contained in it as systematically as possible, thus making them easy to learn and easy to keep. The first object I have tried to secure by studied conciseness of statement and by the omission of all that Latin has in common with English, e.g., definitions of the parts of speech, kinds of sentences, subject, object, etc.; rules for the use of adverbs, conjunctions, and the like. The object of these omissions, however, was not brevity alone, but rather simplicity. I have assumed that the book will be put into the hands of pupils who have already studied English Grammar, and I believe that loss of time is only a part of the harm of requiring a pupil to relearn a grammatical definition or principle couched in new words. The book will not be found suitable, therefore, for pupils who have not mastered the elements of grammar, unless the teacher shall supplement it with the needed definitions. It is now upwards of thirty years that I have been before the public as a writer on Latin grammar*; my varied studies have always led me back to this subject, and I may truly declare, that during each fresh revision of my grammar, when I was engaged in incorporating with my system the observations I had made in the meantime, and in considering the doubts and objections which had been raised in my mind, I have become more and more convinced of the inexhaustible mine of human wisdom whichpresents itself in the language of a happily organized nation like the Romans. I am not speaking here of the accidental matter contained in a grammar, nor of the accumulation of similar passages, - it will afford far greater pleasure to the pupil to discover for himself in the authors whose works he is reading passages which confirm or illustrate the rules he has learned, - nor of niceties of expression, for these are curiosities rather than any thing else, but I mean real philological discoveries and peculiarities, which arise from the organic structure of the language, derive their explanation from it, and in return throw light upon the whole fabric of the lan guage itself; and the result of all this is, that the general principles are better ascertained and established. It is owing to these continued studies that even the present translation of the ninth edition of. My Latin grammar has been enriched by some not unimportant improvements, which I have communi cated in ms. To Dr. Schmitz, and it will henceforth be our united endeavour to remedy every deficiency that may yet be found.
