Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Effective Gesture for Students of Public Speaking It is generally admitted that good gestures help to vitalize, illuminate, and emphasize verbal expression. And if students of the art of speech-making can be led to understand the underlying principles of gesture, and the reasons for its expressiveness, a notable improvement of their style of delivery can be effected. In our instruction and our textbooks dealing with this subject there has been a tendency to inform the student, ex cathedra, that he should use such and such a gesture on this and that passage. In thus performing the function of trainers only, we get more or less mechanical results on the passages in question, but we do not give the insight which enables the student to apply the gestures to similar or analogous ideas wherever expressed. To tell him, for example, that "thousands of acres" may be indicated by a broad sweep of the hand is surely less beneficial than to lead him to understand that the passage of the hand through space conveys to the audience the idea of extent. One feature, however, should particularly commend it, - the prae tice work employs quotations so familiar that every one will recognize them and all should memorize them., Thus the student acquires, apparently without effort, hundreds of maxims, apt ideas well put; and, better still, he comes under the reflex influence of the many good thoughts well expressed. This feature alone, simply by imparting a certain facility in smoothness of phrase, should render the work invaluable to every interested student of the art of public speaking. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Public Speaking This book is designed to meet a special need. It makes no pretense of running the whole gamut of expres sion and furnishing the student with all he needs to know from elementary speaking to advanced argumenta tion or interpretative reading. It is limited to a single field and chiefly to the work of a single course. It is the outgrowth of a need that I have long felt in my classes for a textbook which, without entering into unnecessary detail, would furnish the student with the essentials for instruction in practical speaking. Book Public Speaking Principles and Practice Classic Reprint

Download or read book Public Speaking Principles and Practice Classic Reprint written by Irvah Lester Winter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Speaking Principles and Practice Tins book is designed to set forth the main principles of effective platform delivery, and to provide a large body of material for student practice. The work laid out may be used to form a separate course of study, or a course of training running parallel with a course in debating or other original speaking. It has been prepared with a View also to that large number who want to speak, or have to speak, but cannot have the advantage of a teacher. Much is therefore said in the way of caution, and untechnical language is used throughout. The discussion of principles in Part One is intended as a help towards the student's understanding of his task, and also as a common basis of criticism in the relation between teacher and pupil. The preliminary fundamental work of Part Two, Technical Training, deals first with the right formation of tone, the development of voice as such, the securing of a fixed right vocal habit. Following comes the adapting of this improved voice to the varieties of use, or expressional effect, demanded of the public speaker. After this critical detailed drill, the student is to take the plat form, and apply his acquired technique to continued dis course, receiving criticism after each entire piece of work. Book Fundamentals of Speaking

Download or read book Fundamentals of Speaking written by Charles Henry Woolbert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Speaking: A Text Book of the Foundations of Speech, Public Address, Reading, and Acting Experience teaches that a certain word of caution is due to students who study the subject. Many young people have the idea that in the teaching of expression, speaking, and dramatic reading the student can absorb the ability to speak and read by merely listening to the teacher talk. A greater mistake can hardly be made. Public speaking and interpretation of literature can not be learned by simply harkening to the words of the teacher. The only possible chance the student has of getting any thing valuable out of this subject is found in the amount of work that he himself does in vocal practice and actual speaking. The only way to improve the voice is to use it, and the only way to learn to speak is to speak. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
