This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 867 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential Mechanics - Statics and Strength of Materials with MATLAB and Octave combines two core engineering science courses - “Statics” and “Strength of Materials” - in mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineering. It weaves together various essential topics from Statics and Strength of Materials to allow discussing structural design from the very beginning. The traditional content of these courses are reordered to make it convenient to cover rigid body equilibrium and extend it to deformable body mechanics. The e-book covers the most useful topics from both courses with computational support through MATLAB/Octave. The traditional approach for engineering content is emphasized and is rigorously supported through graphics and analysis. Prior knowledge of MATLAB is not necessary. Instructions for its use in context is provided and explained. It takes advantage of the numerical, symbolic, and graphical capability of MATLAB for effective problem solving. This computational ability provides a natural procedure for What if? exploration that is important for design. The book also emphasizes graphics to understand, learn, and explore design. The idea for this book, the organization, and the flow of content is original and new. The integration of computation, and the marriage of analytical and computational skills is a new valuable experience provided by this e-book. Most importantly the book is very interactive with respect to the code as it appears along with the analysis.

Book excerpt: World War II came to a conclusion on August 14, 1945, eight days after the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. The U.S.S. YMS 472 was one vessel whose job was not complete at war's end. They were assigned to Okinawa Island with orders to sweep the area and destroy active mines. The men were already having thoughts of home, family and togetherness. The weight of the war had, finally, been lifted off of their shoulders. However, not a single one of them suspected they would soon be introduced to a new type of enemy. On September 16, 1945, thirty-three days after the war, a category 3 typhoon named "Ida" would catch the thirty-one man crew of the YMS 472 off guard and send the ship to the bottom of the ocean. Six Days on a Raft is a true story of one man's experience on the Pacific Ocean while lost to the sea in a tiny life raft. As his comrades began to slip into the ocean around him he knew it would only be a short time before it was his turn to succumb to the elements. However, his epiphany about true faith would be the catalyst to a miracle rescue.

Book Linear Operators and Their Essential Pseudospectra

Download or read book Linear Operators and Their Essential Pseudospectra written by Aref Jeribi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear Operators and Their Essential Pseudospectra provides a comprehensive study of spectral theory of linear operators defined on Banach spaces. The central items of interest in the volume include various essential spectra, but the author also considers some of the generalizations that have been studied. In recent years, spectral theory has witnessed an explosive development. This volume presents a survey of results concerning various types of essential spectra and pseudospectra in a unified, axiomatic way and also discusses several topics that are new but which relate to the concepts and methods emanating from the book. The main topics include essential spectra, essential pseudospectra, structured essential pseudospectra, and their relative sets. This volume will be very useful for several researchers since it represents not only a collection of previously heterogeneous material but also includes discussions of innovation through several extensions. As the spectral theory of operators is an important part of functional analysis and has numerous applications in many areas of mathematics, the author suggests that some modest prerequisites from functional analysis and operator theory should be in place to be accessible to newcomers and graduate students of mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1996, a conference was organized by the editors of this volume at the Mathematische Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach to honour Egbert Brieskorn on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Most of the mathematicians invited to the conference have been influenced in one way or another by Brieskorn's work in singularity theory. It was the first time that so many people from the Russian school could be present at a conference in singularity theory outside Russia. This volume contains papers on singularity theory and its applications, written by participants of the conference. In many cases, they are extended versions of the talks presented there. The diversity of subjects of the contributions reflects singularity theory's relevance to topology, analysis and geometry, combining ideas and techniques from all of these fields, as well as demonstrating the breadth of Brieskorn's own interests. Book An Introduction to Utilitarianism

Download or read book An Introduction to Utilitarianism written by Richard Chappell and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-11 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Utilitarianism: From Theory to Practice is a state-of-the-art text, simultaneously accessible to introductory students and informative for more advanced readers. Two key features set it apart. First, its comprehensive coverage of the arguments for and against utilitarianism is unparalleled. Second, it takes seriously the practical implications of utilitarianism for how we should live, with a particular emphasis on utilitarianism's impartial beneficence and its focus on effectiveness. Guided by the conviction that practical ethics is more about how best to use our limited time and resources than which victims to hit with trolleys in thought experiments, its practical upshots should prove amenable to utilitarians and non-utilitarians alike.

Book Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology

Download or read book Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology written by Henry E. Adams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 967 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook, originally published in 1984, was to provide a compreh- sive review of current clinical descriptions, research , and theories of psychopathology. Descriptive psychopathology is a ?eld that forms the foundation of clinical practice and research in clinical psychology, psychiatry, psychiatric social work, psychiatric nursing, and allied professions in mental health. Since the 1st edition, the editors have devised and updated a handbook to cover both general and speci?c topics in psychopathology that would be useful to researchers, practitioners, and graduate or other advanced students in the mental health and behavioral medicine professions. To implement this plan, we have very carefully chosen colleagues whom we respect for their expertise in particular ?elds. These authors include both clinicians and researchers who have outstanding national reputations, as well as more junior behavioral scientists and clinicians who, in our opinion, will achieve similar recognition in the future. The excellent chapters in this book lead us to believe that we have chosen wisely. We would like to express our appreciation to these authors for their outstanding contributions and cooperation.

Book The Hardy Space of a Slit Domain

Download or read book The Hardy Space of a Slit Domain written by Alexandru Aleman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If H is a Hilbert space and T : H ? H is a continous linear operator, a natural question to ask is: What are the closed subspaces M of H for which T M ? M? Of course the famous invariant subspace problem asks whether or not T has any non-trivial invariant subspaces. This monograph is part of a long line of study of the invariant subspaces of the operator T = M (multiplication by the independent variable z, i. e. , M f = zf )on a z z Hilbert space of analytic functions on a bounded domain G in C. The characterization of these M -invariant subspaces is particularly interesting since it entails both the properties z of the functions inside the domain G, their zero sets for example, as well as the behavior of the functions near the boundary of G. The operator M is not only interesting in its z own right but often serves as a model operator for certain classes of linear operators. By this we mean that given an operator T on H with certain properties (certain subnormal operators or two-isometric operators with the right spectral properties, etc. ), there is a Hilbert space of analytic functions on a domain G for which T is unitarity equivalent to M .
