Book The Essence of Provence

Download or read book The Essence of Provence written by Pierre Magnan and published by Skyhorse Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this slim tribute to the founder of the company that sells products with fragrances distilled from aromatic plants such as rosemary, lavender, honeysuckle, sage and thyme, Magnan (The Murdered House) tells the story of Olivier Baussan, who turned his passion for Provence and its sweet-smelling herbs into a highly successful business, l'Occitane. While he was a young member of the back to the land movement, Baussan found an old still, began distilling herbal essences, and in the 1970s started a business that grew into the world-renowned company that sells a wide variety of herbal soaps, shampoos, colognes and bath products. The quintessential entrepreneur, he took his business to Africa, where he used the jatropha bush in the Cape Verde Islands to make soap and the karita tree in Burkina Faso to make creams and lotions. In 1992, Baussan sold the business, though he retained the title of managing director, and Magnan leaves the story of the company there in order to follow its founder into new ventures-a proposal to l'Occitane that Braille be included on its labels and a project for a school where blind children can learn a vocation in the perfume industry.

Book Poor Man s Provence

Download or read book Poor Man s Provence written by Rheta Grimsley Johnson and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a decade, syndicated columnist Rheta Grimsley Johnson has been spending several months a year in Southwest Louisiana, deep in the heart of Cajun Country. Unlike many other writers who have parachuted into the swampy paradise for a few days or weeks, Rheta fell in love with the place, bought a second home and set in planting doomed azaleas and deep roots. She has found an assortment of beautiful people in a homely little town called Henderson, right on the edge of the Atchafalaya Swamp. These days, much is labeled Cajun that is not, and the popularity of the unique culture’s food, songs and dance has been a mixed blessing. The revival of French Louisiana’s traditional music and cuisine often has been cheapened by counterfeits. Confused pilgrims sometimes look to New Orleans for a sampler platter of all things Cajun. Close, but no cigar. Poor Man’s Provence helps define what’s what through lively characters and stories. The book is both personal odyssey and good reporting, travelogue and memoir, funny and frank. This beguiling place is as exotic as it gets without a passport. The author shares what keeps her coming home to French Louisiana. And as NPR commentator Bailey White observes in her foreword, "Both Rheta's readers and the people she writes about will be comfortable, well fed, highly entertained, and happy they came to Poor Man's Provence."

Book A Taste for Provence

  • Author : Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-06-10
  • ISBN : 022632298X
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book A Taste for Provence written by Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provence today is a state of mind as much as a region of France, promising clear skies and bright sun, gentle breezes scented with lavender and wild herbs, scenery alternately bold and intricate, and delicious foods served alongside heady wines. Yet in the mid-twentieth century, a travel guide called the region a “mostly dry, scrubby, rocky, arid land.” How, then, did Provence become a land of desire—an alluring landscape for the American holiday? In A Taste for Provence, historian Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz digs into this question and spins a wonderfully appealing tale of how Provence became Provence. The region had previously been regarded as a backwater and known only for its Roman ruins, but in the postwar era authors, chefs, food writers, visual artists, purveyors of goods, and travel magazines crafted a new, alluring image for Provence. Soon, the travel industry learned that there were many ways to roam—and some even involved sitting still. The promise of longer stays where one cooked fresh food from storied outdoor markets became desirable as American travelers sought new tastes and unadulterated ingredients. Even as she revels in its atmospheric, cultural, and culinary attractions, Horowitz demystifies Provence and the perpetuation of its image today. Guiding readers through books, magazines, and cookbooks, she takes us on a tour of Provence pitched as a new Eden, and she dives into the records of a wide range of visual media—paintings, photographs, television, and film—demonstrating what fueled American enthusiasm for the region. Beginning in the 1970s, Provence—for a summer, a month, or even just a week or two—became a dream for many Americans. Even today as a road well traveled, Provence continues to enchant travelers, armchair and actual alike.
