Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Croce's Aesthetic This is the meaning of Croce's doctrine that beauty is expression. And that doctrine is sound. It does justice to the essential qualities of the beautiful; to its spirituality and its simplicity. Wherever, it says, you find vision and utterance, there you have art and beauty. They may be on a great scale or a small, but they have one quality throughout. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Aesthetic It would have been foolish, I thought, to omit the more obvious points of the mediaeval development, both in art and in opinion, the mere mention of which might be suggestive to my readers, simply because I had to take them from such writers as Prof. Adamson, Prof. Seth, Prof. Middleton, Mr. Morris and Mr. Pater, and not from original research. Some division of labour must be allowed, though the fact that it has been resorted to should always be made known. Book The Principles of Aesthetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Aesthetics Classic Reprint written by Dewitt Henry Parker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Aesthetics This book has grown out of lectures to students at the University of Mchigan and embodies my effort to express to them the nature and meaning of art. In writing it, I have sought to maintain scientific accuracy, yet at the same time to preserve freedom of style and something of the inspiration of the subject. While intended primarily for students, the book will appeal generally, I hope, to people who are interested in the intelligent appreciation of art. My obligations are extensive, most directly to those whom I have cited in foot-notes to the text, but also to others whose influence is too indirect or per vasive to make citation profitable, or too obvious to make it necessary. For the broader philosophy of art, my debt is heaviest, I believe, to the artists and philosophers during the period from Herder to Hegel, who gave to the study its greatest development, and, among contemporaries, to Croce and Lipps. In addition, I have drawn freely upon the more special investigations of recent times, but with the caution desirable in view of the very tentative character of some of the results. To lwrs. Robert M. Wenley I wish to express my thanks for her very careful and helpful reading of the page proof. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Guide to the Literature of Aesthetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Guide to the Literature of Aesthetics Classic Reprint written by Charles Mills Gayley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Literature of Aesthetics It will be the aim Of future bibliographies to take up special topics Of aesthetic criticism, to analyze them minutely, and to collect from available sources whatever references are found to bear upon them. Such a bibliography in respect Of Literary Criticism has been prepared, and will shortly be sent to press. In the collection of material the work has Of necessity been confined to two University libraries, neither Of which is SO well equipped with special treatises on aesthetics as might be desired. Furthermore, since the list has been, in general, limited to works consulted at the shelves, the compilers have been, at times, reduced to the citation Of an inferior edition, although they knew that a later and, presumably, better edition existed. But to bow to this inevitable has seemed wiser than to circulate information at second hand. Of course, in a few cases, reference has been made to volumes not owned by either library, volumes, however, altogether too important to be omitted from a general list. Book The Essence of Aesthetic

Download or read book The Essence of Aesthetic written by Benedetto Croce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essence of Aesthetic When I first visited Naples, in 1909, I was quite unprepared for making the discovery of a new philosopher, and nothing was further from my mind than to become his prophet to the English-speaking world. Yet so it has happened. If I may be permitted the use of metaphor and to take the eternal activities of the spirit of man as equivalent to the eternal ideas of Plato, yet far more real than they, because immanent and not transcendental, and if I may push yet further the metaphor and figure these activities of the spirit as planets, then one might say that Croce is the Adams-Leverrier of philosophy, and his Theory of Æsthetic the discovery of the planet Neptune. For just as those astronomer-mathematicians proved the independent existence of that planet, hitherto unknown, by observing the perturbations it set up throughout the planetary system, so Croce has proved the independent existence of Æsthetic, the last of the great planetary activities of the spirit of man to come into line with thought. Just as the action of Neptune was falsely attributed to other causes, so the action of Æsthetic has been falsely confused with Ethic, Economic and Logic. Croce has disentangled and proved its independence. And just as we can now say that there is no other planet to be discovered in the heavens, so we can say that there is no other activity of the spirit to be discovered. Returning to 1909 and my visit to Naples, I was not long in finding a copy of the "Estetica," and a single reading made clear to me its supreme importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aesthetic as Science of Expression, and General Linguistic, Translated From the Italian of Benedetto Croce N 0 one could have been further removed than my self, as I turned over at Naples the pages of La Crz'tz'ea, from any idea that I was nearing the solution of the problem of Art. All my youth it had haunted me. As an undergraduate at Oxford I had caught the exquisite cadence of Walter Pater's speech, as it came from his very lips, or rose like the perfume of some exotic flower from the ribbed pages of the Renaissance. Book The Aesthetic Experience Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Aesthetic Experience Classic Reprint written by Laurence Buermeyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aesthetic Experience The enjoyment Of art is ordinarily looked upon as some thing detached from the serious business of life, as an episode in an existence otherwise fundamentally non-aesthetic. Art is conceived as shut up in books, concert-halls, and museums; as, perhaps, a legitimate preoccupation on a trip to Europe; but under ordinary circumstances a relaxation, and if more than that, a distraction or even a dissipation. For a few individuals, writers, musicians, or painters, it is more than a by-play or avocation; but for the mass Of men concern with it is an interlude, and its production is of course out of the question. In this it resembles religion. TO go to a museum and to go to church alike involve a break with our usual habits. Both are expeditions into worlds other than that in, which our every-day Occupations go on. And both worlds are suspect from the point of view of the habitual dweller in the real world. The man who attempts to treat the pre cepts Of religion as applicable to his business or personal relations is as little to be considered fully sane as the man whose life centres about art: both are at least likely to be queer. A book which is thought Of as a work Of art is presumably to be read from a sense of duty, and in a frame of mind both self-conscious and self-congratulatory - a frame Of mind, at any rate, quite different from that of Simple straightforwardness with which we approach the merely enjoyable. Book Aesthetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Aesthetics Classic Reprint written by Eugene Veron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from AEsthetics As there is no such thing as abstract art, l'art en soi, because absolute beauty is a chimera, l so neither is there any definitive and final system of Esthetics. All the various formulas by which at various times it has been im prisoned - idealism, naturalism, realism, and such like, are nothing but different ways of looking at art, which is not entirely contained in any one of them. Each of them may recommend itself to certain individual or national tempera ments but it is absurd to force them upon natures to which they are repugnant. It is quite as ridiculous to condemn Flemish or Dutch art in the name of Greek sculpture, as to go through the reverse process, and to refuse all praise to Phidias because he is not Rembrandt. Courbet, too, is legitimate. We may be allowed to prefer one to the other, according to our natural attraction and affinities; but zesthetics has no more right to exclude either the one or the other, than we have to import passion and partiality into a question of science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sense of Beauty: Being the Outlines of AEsthetic Theory This little work contains the chief ideas gathered together for a course of lectures on the theory and history of aesthetics given at Harvard College from 1892 to 1895. The only originality I can claim is that which may result from the attempt to put to gether the scattered commonplaces of criticism into a system, under the inspiration of a naturalistic psychology. I have studied sincerity rather than novelty, and if any subject, as for instance the excellence of tragedy, is presented in a new light, the change consists only in the stricter application to a complex subject of the principles acknowledged to obtain in our simple judgments. My effort throughout has been to recall those fundamental aesthetic feelings the orderly extension of which yields sanity of judgment and distinction of taste. The influences under which the book has been written are rather too general and pervasive to admit of specification; yet the student of philosophy will not fail to perceive how much I owe to writers, both living and dead, to whom no honour could be added by my acknowledgments. I have usually omitted any reference to them in foot-notes or in the text, in order that the air of controversy might be avoided, and the reader might be enabled to compare what is said more directly with the reality of his own experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Genesis of the Aesthetic Categories Before considering the propositions seriatim, it will be convenient to note brie y what the characteristics of the aesthetic consciousness are. In this the aim will be, not to present an exhaustive list, but rather to indicate categories which have been generally and widely recognized as distinguishing the aesthetic from other values, such as the ethical, logical, or economic, or from other pleasures, such as the agreeable. And amid the seeming multiplicity of such marks or differentia which have been put forth by writers on aesthetics there is, after all, a considerable degree of uniformity.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music and the Fine Arts: A Psychology of Aesthetic On the threshhold of our present subject the question may be asked What is the genetic unit Of Music? We seek first Of all to find and to formulate the embryonic germ out of which the entire musical organization unfolds; to use a biological comparison, we would fain reach down to the cell, the orig inal basic unit Of which the total body of Music is constituted. To be sure, Music is not a stationary thing which we can examine with the microscope; its essence is move ment, it is a process incessantly going on; when the motion stops, the Music stops; it has to be active, yea self - active in an external way, and hence it is the most adequate outer artistic manifestation of our mind's self-ac tivity and Of that of the universe too. He might to know the essentials which constitute good literature, - that the essentials necessary for significance are the same in all the arts, literature, poetry, music and painting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from AEsthetic Principles One of the kindly critics of my book on Pain, Pleasure, and AEsthetics has compared the task of its reading with the effort required in walking over a ploughed field after a heavy rain; although in the end, I am glad to say, he finds the labour healthful, and looks back upon the effort with pleasure. I have thought it worth while to try to show to such readers a way across this ploughed field which will not involve so much arduous labour on their part; and I think this possible because the explorer of a field is often able to guide others with ease in a path already trodden and therefore familiar, being able in places to take a straighter course than that at first necessary, because it is no longer needful to search for the path.
