Book Cambridge Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Passing from the countryside to within the boun daries of the University itself, nothing, perhaps, will seem more remarkable to the curious observer than the absence of that hard-featured grandeur with which the architecture of the Middle Ages was so deeply impressed. Cambridge goes back eight cen tuties; but there remains little to remind us of those many vicissitudes of mediaeval life from which neither of the Universities emerged unscathed; for with the disappearance of Feudalism, the advent of the New Learning, and the breakdown of Monasticism, Cam bridge assumed a richer dress, and the fine apparel of those days becomes her still. From that string of T udor palaces whose broad lawns and well-nurtured gardens mark the lazy passage of the Cam, to those more distant Colleges of Jesus and Emmanuel, a grave tranquillity pervades the whole. This sense of peace and of contentment, so precious to the individual mind, seems largely due to that gracious domesticity which the Tudor architect so well knew how to im part even to the meanest of his college buildings. But to those later architects who practised here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford and Cambridge: Delineated by Hanslip Fletcher The Sister Universities Ye famous sister Universities, Oxford and Cambridge, whence proceeds your hate? Brothers' rare concord do ye imitate, Each greeting each with mutual injuries? Brothers fall out and quarrell, I confesse, But sisters love; for it becomes you lesse. Why strive ye sisters for antiquity? Cannot your present honour you suffice? Why strive ye sisters for that vanity, Which if ye saw as 'twas, you would despise? You must make love; love is your surest hold; Others must honour you and make you olde. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But the interest which gathers round the contests of Crown and Parliament in the seventeenth century is of a different order; it finds response in the deepest convictions of human nature, and will sur vive when the vulgar renown of wars waged for mere material dominion has ceased to attract alike the historian and the student. Book The Meaning of Success

Download or read book The Meaning of Success written by Jo Bostock and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Meaning of Success: Insights from Women at Cambridge makes a compelling case for a more inclusive definition of success. It argues that in order to recognise, reward and realise the talents of both women and men, a more meaningful definition of success is needed. Practical ways of achieving this are explored through interviews with female role models at the University of Cambridge. First-person stories bring alive the achievements and challenges women experience in their working lives, and the effect gender has on careers. The book stimulates a debate about how to bring about a more inclusive working environment.

Book William Sheppard Cromwell s Law Reformer

Download or read book William Sheppard Cromwell s Law Reformer written by Nancy L. Matthews and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-08 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a full account of Sheppard's employment under Oliver Cromwell's Protectorate as well as an examination of his family background and education, his religious commitment to John Owen's party of Independents and his legal philosophy. An appraisal of all Sheppard's legal works, including those written during the Civil War and the Restoration period, illustrates the overlapping concerns with law reform, religion and politics in his generation. Sheppard had impressively consistent goals for the reform of English law and his prescient proposals anticipate the reforms ultimately adopted in the nineteenth century, culminating in the Judicature Acts of 1875-8. Dr Matthews examines the relative importance of Sheppard's books to his generation and to legal literature in general. The study provides a full bibliography of Sheppard's legal and religious works and an appendix of the sources Sheppard used in the composition of his books on the law.
