Book The Analysis Technical Valuation Purification and Use of Coal Gas Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis, Technical Valuation, Purification, and Use of Coal Gas The condenser is essentially a quantity of iron pipes, which are in communication at the bottom with an iron chest-like receiver, into which the tar and ammoniacal liquor fall, and from which they run into subterranean stores, like large wells. The condenser acts by trans mitting heat from the gas and vapours within to the external air or water in contact with its outer surface, and by this the gases and vapours are cooled so as to separate the one from the other. The vapours become fluids, and fall into the wells; and the gases pass on to be purified, stored, and used. About ten feet Of con denser-surface for each thousand feet of gas made per day is allowed by the best engineers, but very wide departures from this proportion are familiar to all who are acquainted with gasworks as they exist in fact. Book A Practical Treatise on the Manufacture and Distribution of Coal Gas Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Practical Treatise on the Manufacture and Distribution of Coal Gas Classic Reprint written by William Richards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Manufacture and Distribution of Coal Gas These were the chimeras vainly pursued during many ages by alchemists, and if we had not painful proof before our eyes that there are people who believe in the virtue of spirit-rapping and spirit-writing at the present day, we might be allowed to doubt the existence of alchemists in former times. But there are spirit-rappers now living, and beyond all doubt there were once alchemists, of whose peculiar operations it is recorded, that it is an art without an art, that begins with lying, is continued with labour, and ends with beggary, a description equally applicable to spirit-rapping. Nevertheless, alchemy has not been altogether useless in the development of science, for its absurd hopes and foolish attempts kept alive a spirit of inquiry regarding the metals, which really led to the discovery of the gases, and consequently to the ultimate expansion of chemical knowledge. Of the truth of this we may soon convince ourselves by a candid review of the discoveries which first proved that the gases had weight, and were material bodies, regarding which the ancients appear to have been wholly ignorant. This fact was discovered and demonstrated in the year 1630, by Jean Rey, a physician of Perigord, who noticed that both tin and lead increased in weight during alchemical calcination; and he attributed this augmentation of weight to the absorption of air, which he therefore supposed to be ponderable like other material bodies. Book Oil and Gas Fields of Greene County Pa Classic Reprint

Download or read book Oil and Gas Fields of Greene County Pa Classic Reprint written by Ralph W. Stone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oil and Gas Fields of Greene County, Pa Greene County has produced oil continuously since 1886, and since 1890 it has also yielded a large amount of natural gas. Over wells have been drilled for gas or Oil within its boundaries. SO far as known these are shown on the accompanying map Of the county (pl. I, in pocket). Gas and Oil wells and dry holes are represented by appropriate symbols. The map is complete to December, 1905, when the field was last visited. Other wells have been drilled since then, and it is probable that a few dry holes have been mist. While the derrick or rig remains standing or after the rig is blown down and only the bull wheels remain a well can hardly fail to be found, but when not even the conductor box is left the former existence of a well may escape notice. The Object Of this report is to assemble the present knowledge of the occurrence of gas and Oil in this county, including a large amount Of unpublished data, and to. Present it in a convenient form for the use Of those who are interested or engaged in the Oil and gas business. The report describes 1) the rocks from the surface to the bottom Of the deepest well; (2) the geologic structure, with a contour map of the Pittsburg coal; (3) the oil and gas sands; (4) the Oil and gas fields, with suggestions for their further development. In addition many well records are given, and triangulation stations and bench marks are described. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Water Gas Apparatus and the Use of Central District Coal as Generator Fuel Classic Reprint

Download or read book Water Gas Apparatus and the Use of Central District Coal as Generator Fuel Classic Reprint written by William W. Odell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-08 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water-Gas Apparatus and the Use of Central District Coal as Generator Fuel By reason of the greatly increased cost of the gas oil used to enrich water gas, and the higher costs of coal and labor, many gas compa nies, especially those having franchises that call for the delivery of gas of a certain quality at a certain price per thousand feet, are having financial difficulties. Reconstruction of plants to manu facture coal gas instead of water gas is difficult if not economically impossible under present conditions. The situation calls for the use of practicable economies and methods. One of these economies is the use of cheaper grades of coal to replace anthracite or coke. In the course of its investigations for increasing efficiency in the use of fuel the Bureau of Mines has given attention to various problems bearing on the manufacture of water gas. This paper presents cer tain preliminary studies made while considering the possibility of substituting Indiana and Illinois coal for coke in water-gas generator sets. Book Deterioration and Spontaneous Heating of Coal in Storage

Download or read book Deterioration and Spontaneous Heating of Coal in Storage written by Horace C. Porter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Deterioration and Spontaneous Heating of Coal in Storage: A Preliminary Report Similar views have been held more recently. For example, in a paper before the United States Naval Institute, in 1906, b one finds the statement: The pressure of the weight of coal causes gases to be evolved; these gases constitute the chief and only value of the coal in that they furnish the heat units. It is claimed that if a ton of fine bituminous coal be spread out on a concrete pave ment in the open air in this climate [key West, for one year, it will lose all its calorific properties. The gases are simply free to escape, and when the coal has lost all its gas it will have lost all its heat units and be simply coke. The author's meaning, no doubt, is that the heat units in the volatile part of the coal are all lost by storage in the manner described. In 1907 a German gas-works engineer claimed0 to have found that moist fine coal sustained an average heating value loss of per cent per week by the escape of gas. The 1889 edition of Groves and Thorpe's Chemical Technology of Fuels says: d In some places coal is known to lose 50 per cent of its heating value in six months. Cameron Forbes' Romance of Business prompted him to prepare a list of books and booklets which reveal the Romance of Common Things. To his surprise their number grew from an original seventy-five to nearly four hundred, without counting those hastily prepared publications which expect one page of historical introduction and a few pages of extravagant statements to carry a Message to Garcia and to start the dollars rolling into the treasury. Book Water Gas Operating Methods With Central District Bituminous Coals as Generator Fuel

Download or read book Water Gas Operating Methods With Central District Bituminous Coals as Generator Fuel written by W. A. Dunkley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water-Gas Operating Methods With Central District Bituminous Coals as Generator Fuel: A Summary of Experiments on a Commercial Scale; A Preliminary Report Of the problems mentioned, the first is often the most difficult one to solve. The uncertainty of the results to be Obtained with an unknown fuel, the lack of a financial incentive to undertake some thing which is new and untried. And which may lead to difficulties or inconveniences, are sufficient to prejudice many gas makers, even before a trial is made. The superintendent who is about to try a new fuel, and especially a fuel so different from the customary as is bituminous coal, must fit his method of attack to the temperament of his operators. Different methods must be used in different cases. It must be realized that the cooperation of the gas maker must be obtained for good results. A good gas maker senses the behavior of his machine in a manner in comprehensible to the mere technical man, and this peculiar under standing can be utilized to advantage if at the same time the more visible conditions are kept sight of carefully. It is not the purpose of this paper to tell the superintendent how to handle his men, but merely to suggest how essential to success is their cooperation. It is believed that this can be obtained in any way which makes them feel that it is to their interest to succeed, or that they are believed to be capable of accomplishing something out of the ordinary. The Educational Committee of the Federal Council of Churches has sought to find concrete expression for those Christian principles which are too often confined to abstract statement. Christian ethics are well understood in theory. There is need now for a science of Christian conduct through which we may realize ethical ideals in our working life. Because of its basic character and its present importance in the public mind the coal industry offers a field for this endeavor. Hence the Educational Committee presents through the medium of the Press of the Young Men's Christian Association, this book, addressed particularly to the people of the churches of America.
