Book excerpt: Imagine spending your whole life searching for the one; searching for acceptance; searching for just a hint of satisfaction. Imagine walking through life alone, confused, and convinced you will never find what it is your heart desires. Jared Covington is such a man in search of all things life has promised, but has not delivered. I'm On My Way is a passionate tale of a sometimes bitter, sometimes angry, but always hopeful young man and his search to undercover the love of his life and in the process, himself. In terse, fluid prose, David paints three-dimensional portraits of each of his main characters. Set against the backdrop of New York City, the book addresses critical issues surrounding being black, gay and at times closeted in America without sounding preachy. David's high quality of writing, and carefully developed themes seamlessly takes us into the hearts and minds of several young men sorting through some of life's most pressing issues. This engrossing debut, challenges stereotypes, emits hope, and brings to life the often-misunderstood world of gay minorities.

This book was released on 2001-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebrated compendium of sexual oddities, a no-holds-barred treatment of sexual practices throughout the world and throughout time. The work makes excellent reading, though it may be criticized for lacking any substantial synthesis of its components and for being unsympathetic to homosexuals and masturbators. Iwan Bloch (1872-1922) -- the father of sexual science -- took his medical degree from Wuurzburg in 1896 and soon published his Ursprung der Syphilis (1901), which made him the foremost exponent of the so-called Morbus Americanus theory that syphilis originated in America. His Beitrage zur Aetiologie der Psychopathia Sexualis was an important follow-up of Krafft-Ebing, and several other works brought him recognition as a pioneer sexologist. Book jacket.

Download or read book Plato s Symposium written by Plato and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plato, Allan Bloom wrote, is "the most erotic of philosophers," and his Symposium is one of the greatest works on the nature of love ever written. This new edition brings together the English translation of the renowned Plato scholar and translator, Seth Benardete, with two illuminating commentaries on it: Benardete's "On Plato's Symposium" and Allan Bloom's provocative essay, "The Ladder of Love." In the Symposium, Plato recounts a drinking party following an evening meal, where the guests include the poet Aristophanes, the drunken Alcibiades, and, of course, the wise Socrates. The revelers give their views on the timeless topics of love and desire, all the while addressing many of the major themes of Platonic philosophy: the relationship of philosophy and poetry, the good, and the beautiful.

Book Racial Erotics

  • Author : C. Winter Han
  • Publisher : University of Washington Press
  • Release : 2021-07-16
  • ISBN : 0295749105
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book Racial Erotics written by C. Winter Han and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual desire, often understood as personal erotic preference, is frequently seen as neutral, natural, or inevitable. Countering these commonplace assumptions, Racial Erotics shows how sexual partnering within communities of gay men is deeply embedded within larger social structures that define whiteness as desirable and normative while othering men of color. In queer erotic economies this othering may take the form of sexual rejection or fetishization of men of color, but C. Winter Han argues that the real danger of sexual racism is that it creates a hierarchy of racial worth that extends outside of erotic encounters into the everyday lives of gay men of color. In this way, sexual racism perpetuates a larger project of racial erasing that equates gayness with whiteness to secure acceptance for gay white men at the expense of queers of color. With vivid examples from interviews, media representations, and online dating sites, Han highlights the creative means through which gay men of color, cordoned off in spaces both gay and straight, produce alternative frameworks to combat dominant narratives. Racial Erotics offers a new paradigm for understanding the connection of race and queer desire, demonstrating how race profoundly shapes sexual desires among men while racialized notions of desire construct beliefs about belonging.

Book Sex and Dehumanization

Download or read book Sex and Dehumanization written by David Holbrook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before published in the United States, David Holbrook's study offers the sort of common sense all too uncommon in this area of study. His essential premise is that sex has become converted from an instrument for the expression of happiness and affection into an end unto itself. In the search for sexual liberation, all that has been accomplished is the mechanization of sexuality and the destruction of the full range of emotions that nourish the human search for social and biological meaning. Sex and Dehumanization is one of those rare books that will immediately strike the reader as part of the common wisdom that has somehow been lost in a search for the pleasure principle unhinged from other values and goals.During the past quarter century, Holbrook argues, not only has the concept of sex become increasingly separated from the rest of existence, but sex casualties have increased disastrously. The spread of AIDS has brought an ominous and deadly manifestation of this thesis into the human equation, yet at the same tune the response to this menace has been nothing short of manic denial. A similar picture emerges in less deadly forms. Whatever statistics one examines, whether those of sexual activity among young children, abortion, or sexual disease, one finds a grim antidote to any hopes of progress in the sphere of human dealings with the sexual. Holbrook locates many of the problems involved in this separation of sex and affection in the emergence of the idea that our lives are governed by impersonal forces beyond human control.Sex and Dehumanization is in the great tradition of social history and psychiatric analysis. Robert Nye, writing in the Scotsman, says that "Holbrook's diagnosis of our unease should be attentively studied by all who really care about sex and love and the responsibility of freedom." Gabriel Pearson, in the Guardian echoes this sentiment, adding that "never has such a secular ethic been so firmly and urgently and usefully stated." And John Rex sees the book "as containing the germs of important and central moral discussion."
