Book The Equidistance Tendency and Its Consequences

Download or read book The Equidistance Tendency and Its Consequences written by Walter Charles Gogel and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equidistance tendency is the tendency for objects or other inhomogeneities in the field-of-view to appear at the same distance as each other with the strength of this tendency being inversely related to directional separation. The evidence for the existence of the equidistance tendency and for its ability to modify the perceived depth resulting from size or stereoscopic cues is reviewed. The equidistance tendency is discussed as a disturbing factor in visual experimentation and as a necessary factor in the understanding of Emmert's law, the moon illusion, and similar phenomena. Several possible explanations for the equidistance tendency are evaluated in terms of the range of phenomena with which it is identified. (Author).

Book Cue enhancement as a function of task set

Download or read book Cue enhancement as a function of task set written by Walter C. Cogel and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under flight conditions, as well as in other situations, judgments of the distances between objects may depend upon a variety of possible cues. In this study, the hypothesis was tested that the intention to use a particular cue relation would enhance the effectiveness of that particular cue in determining the resulting perception. For this purpose, a situation was presented in which the apparent depth position of an object in a configuration of objects would differ depending upon which of two possible cue relations (size cues) were used. The results support the conclusion that the perceived depth position of the object differed in the expected directions as a function of the task-set. The data of the study are discussed with respect to the 'adjacency principle' which states that cue efficiency is determined by the relative adjacency of objects between which the cues occur. Although the effect of cue-set upon the perception seems to be small compared with that of adjacency, it cannot completely be ignored. (Author).

Download or read book Indirect Perception written by Irvin Rock and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1997-03-12 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This posthumous volume, the culmination of a long and distinguished career, brings together an original essay by the author together with a careful selection of previously published articles (most by Rock) on the theory that perception is an indirect process in which visual experience is derived by inference, rather than being directly and independently determined by retinal stimulation. Irvin Rock was a global perceptual theorist in the grand tradition of von Helmoltz, Wertheimer, and Gibson. This posthumous volume, the culmination of a long and distinguished career, brings together an original essay by the author together with a careful selection of previously published articles (most by Rock) on the theory that perception is an indirect process in which visual experience is derived by inference, rather than being directly and independently determined by retinal stimulation. Rock's reasons for holding that perception is indirect were mainly empirical. Unlike many theorists, he paid close attention to a broad range of experimental evidence in evaluating theoretical claims. His approach, in which theory and experiment go hand in hand, is well represented in this book. In the first chapter, which is new, Rock lays out the theoretical issues underlying indirect perception. The remaining twenty-two chapters present detailed evidence in support of the indirect view. They are divided into sections covering indirect perception, organization, shape, motion, illusions, lightness, and final considerations. Each section is introduced by the author. Stephen Palmer's introduction to the book places Rock's work within the context of the history of perceptual theory—approaches formulated by Helmholtz (inferential), by the Gestaltist psychologists (organizational), and by Gibson (ecological). Book The Moon Illusion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Maurice Hershenson
  • Publisher : Psychology Press
  • Release : 2013-05-13
  • ISBN : 1134737386

Download or read book The Moon Illusion written by Maurice Hershenson and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume attempts to answer one of mankind's oldest puzzles -- why the moon appears to be larger and closer on the horizon than when it is high in the sky. Over the centuries, many viable solutions have been proposed for this psychological phenomenon. The Moon Illusion presents papers by major theorists striving to explain the illusion and providing commentaries on the works of others. Research on the moon illusion has been scattered throughout journals in many disciplines including philosophy, physiology, physics, and psychology. As the first publication to present a comprehensive treatment of the problem, this book is of vital interest to professionals whose major concern is visual perception, experimental psychology, or the neurosciences. Of additional interest to those whose focus is physics or astronomy.

Book Seeing Thinking and Knowing

Download or read book Seeing Thinking and Knowing written by A. Carsetti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Putnam to talk of “facts” without specifying the language to be used is to talk of nothing; “object” itself has many uses and as we creatively invent new uses of words “we find that we can speak of ‘objects’that were not ‘values of any variable’in 1 any language we previously spoke” . The notion of object becomes, then, like the notion of reference, a sort of open land, an unknown territory. The exploration of this land - pears to be constrained by use and invention. But, we may wonder, is it possible to guide invention and control use? In what way, in particular, is it possible, at the level of na- ral language, to link together program expressions and natural evolution? To give an answer to these onerous questions we should immediately point out that cognition (as well as natural language) has to be considered first of all as a peculiar fu- tion of active biosystems and that it results from complex interactions between the - ganism and its surroundings. “In the moment an organism perceives an object of wh- ever kind, it immediately begins to ‘interpret’this object in order to react properly to it . . . It is not necessary for the monkey to perceive the tree in itself. . . What counts is sur- 2 vival” .

Book Vision Science

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen E. Palmer
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 1999-04-14
  • ISBN : 0262304015

Download or read book Vision Science written by Stephen E. Palmer and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999-04-14 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revolutionizes how vision can be taught to undergraduate and graduate students in cognitive science, psychology, and optometry. It is the first comprehensive textbook on vision to reflect the integrated computational approach of modern research scientists. This new interdisciplinary approach, called "vision science," integrates psychological, computational, and neuroscientific perspectives. The book covers all major topics related to vision, from early neural processing of image structure in the retina to high-level visual attention, memory, imagery, and awareness. The presentation throughout is theoretically sophisticated yet requires minimal knowledge of mathematics. There is also an extensive glossary, as well as appendices on psychophysical methods, connectionist modeling, and color technology. The book will serve not only as a comprehensive textbook on vision, but also as a valuable reference for researchers in cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience, computer science, optometry, and philosophy.
