But very little about these regions was known till Dr. R.C. Majumdar drew our attention to this field of research through his pioneering works in India. Suvarnadvipa in two volumes is the fruit of one of his painstaking researches. The author has used all the available material brought to light by the Dutch savants and all native and foreign sources, viz. accounts of Chinese travellers and Arab historians and geographers. He has interpreted various stories that throw light on the spread of Hinduism and Buddhism in Java, Bali, and Borneo and studied and used local inscriptions as source materials. He deals with the Sailendra Empire and later Indo-Javanese empires with fullness and care. It is an interesting theme told in an interesting manner. The first volume is devoted to the study of the political history upto the downfall of the Hindu kingdoms in Suvarnadvipa, while the second volume deals with the cultural history. Subjects covered by the second volume are law and socio-economic conditions, literature, religions, use of Sanskrit, art and architecture in different ancient sites, etc. The value of the work has been enhanced by seventy-five plates of illustrations.

Similar to other Theravāda Pali chronicles, the legend integrates religious and political stories, namely, Queen Cāma's founding of a dynastic lineage and the fortunes of Buddhism within it. The Legend of Queen Cāma offers revealing insights into the nature of Buddhism as a living tradition during one of the greatest periods in the history of Thai Buddhism. These insights include the symbolic structure of Buddhist cosmology, the close association of Buddhism and the founding of city states, the interrelationship of popular Buddhist ethical teachings and devotional religion, and the inherently syncretic nature of Buddhism as presented in a text indebted to the folkloric traditions of Northern Thailand. In 1855, Arthur Phayre, the British commissioner for the annexed territories, visited the court of Ava in Upper Burma as part of an effort to improve relations with Mindon. Henry Yule was secretary to Phayre and accompanied him on the mission. This work, written by Yule, is a modified version of the mission's report, based on Phayre's journals and Yule's own observations and impressions. The work includes detailed maps and drawings, and remains an extraordinarily valuable source for the study of the history, geography, arts, religion, and culture of Burma. A long chapter is devoted to the ruins of the ancient city of Bagan (then known as Pagan) and its temples, as they were found by the mission in 1855.
