Book Chemistry and Methods of Enzymes

Download or read book Chemistry and Methods of Enzymes written by James B. Sumner and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry and Methods of Enzymes, Third Edition focuses on the processes, methodologies, and reactions in enzyme chemistry, as well as kinetics, nucleases, esterases, and carbohydrates. The publication first underscores the general properties of enzymes, including chemical nature, occurrence, numerical characterization of enzyme concentration, kinetics of enzyme reactions, preparation of commercial enzymes, purification and preservation of enzymes, relations of vitamins to enzymes, and zymogens and kinases. The text then takes a look at esterases and carbohydrates. Topics include pectin depolymerase, heparinase, xylanase, chitinase, dextranase, trehalase, nucleotide phosphatases, glucosulfatase, and gastric lipase. The manuscript examines nucleases, nuclein deaminases, amidases, proteolytic enzymes, and hydrases. Discussions focus on enolase, aconitase, peptidases as metalloproteins, glutaminases, aspartase, urease, adenosine deaminase, and nucleoside phosphorylase. The book also elaborates on iron and copper enzymes, dehydrogenases containing coenzymes I and II, and yellow enzymes. The text is a dependable source of data for chemists and researchers wanting to dig deeper into the chemistry and methods of enzymes.

Book Enzymatic Reaction Mechanisms

Download or read book Enzymatic Reaction Mechanisms written by Perry A. Frey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-27 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books dealing with the mechanisms of enzymatic reactions were written a generation ago. They included volumes entitled Bioorganic Mechanisms, I and II by T.C. Bruice and S.J. Benkovic, published in 1965, the volume entitled Catalysis in Chemistry and Enzymology by W.P. Jencks in 1969, and the volume entitled Enzymatic Reaction Mechanisms by C.T. Walsh in 1979. The Walsh book was based on the course taught by W.P. Jencks and R.H. Abeles at Brandeis University in the 1960's and 1970's. By the late 1970's, much more could be included about the structures of enzymes and the kinetics and mechanisms of enzymatic reactions themselves, and less emphasis was placed on chemical models. Walshs book was widely used in courses on enzymatic mechanisms for many years. Much has happened in the field of mechanistic enzymology in the past 15 to 20 years. Walshs book is both out-of-date and out-of-focus in todays world of enzymatic mechanisms. There is no longer a single volume or a small collection of volumes to which students can be directed to obtain a clear understanding of the state of knowledge regarding the chemicals mechanisms by which enzymes catalyze biological reactions. There is no single volume to which medicinal chemists and biotechnologists can refer on the subject of enzymatic mechanisms. Practitioners in the field have recognized a need for a new book on enzymatic mechanisms for more than ten years, and several, including Walsh, have considered undertaking to modernize Walshs book. However, these good intentions have been abandoned for one reason or another. The great size of the knowledge base in mechanistic enzymology has been a deterrent. It seems too large a subject for a single author, and it is difficult for several authors to coordinate their work to mutual satisfaction. This text by Perry A. Frey and Adrian D. Hegeman accomplishes this feat, producing the long-awaited replacement for Walshs classic text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentials of Enzymology provides concise information on an important area of the subject, Biochemistry. This may serve as course material for an advanced treatise in Enzymology designed for undergraduate science degree programs, especially B.Sc. (Hons ) Biochemistry and Chemistry. The book is in 12 chapters which has been divided into four distinct sections, thus (1) Basic enzyme chemistry and physiology. (2) Enzyme Kinetics, (3) Enzyme catalysis, Mechanisms and Regulation,(4)Applications of Enzymology. The Part 1 consists of four chapters that deal with the nature of enzymes- (history, properties and classifi cation), enzyme physiology; structure of enzymes, and analytical enzymology. Part 2 deals with Enzyme Kinetics which is treated in three chapters, and Part 3, made up of three chapters discuss Enzyme catalysis, mechanisms and regulation. Lastly, Part 4 consisting of two chapters deal with the applications of enzymology. Signifi cantly, the kinetics of enzyme catalyzed reactions in diverse experimental conditions, and also under various inhibition types are presented in a simple, mathematical lucid approach. The mechanisms of action for two atypical proteins-chymotrypsin and lysozyme, so also the identifi cation of active sites of enzymes by specifi c labels are discussed concisely. Lastly, the specifi c applications of enzymes in diagnostic medicine, industry, and also the new emerging area of enzyme biotechnology and enzyme bioinformatics are presented
