Politics of Powerlessness examines nationwide support for George C. Wallace in the presidential campaigns of 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976. A number of election and candidate preference surveys are used as sources of data on supporters. An understanding of Wallace's appeal is provided through an examination of themes noted throughout his speeches and an analysis of his political history from biographical sources, personal interviews, and newspaper accounts of the time. The picture of Wallace that emerges is one of a man who saw himself as a crusader for his supporters' interests, while deliberately heightening and intensifying their feelings of powerlessness as a means of getting votes. Carlson shows that Wallace voters were not marginal. They did not reflect a loss of status, nor were they simply outside the mainstream of political life. They were very much like major party voters, with the exception of their feelings of political powerlessness that me about by increased government ..rticipation in state politics. This work informed not only by a careful analysis, but by interviews with Wallace, many of his followers, and people active in his campaigns. The work has the additional advantage of having follow-up analyses and interviews as, late as 1978. In this sense, it represents not only a scholarly analysis of the Wallace phenomenon, but the most up-to-date analysis as well.

It is particularly focused on the negative impact the Electoral College has had on Black and Brown voters. I was an Adjunct Political Science Professor in the Political Science Department at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina from 2006 through 2013. My primary area of focus was “Media Politics” but my favorite course was American Government. Teaching this course gave me an opportunity to see that my students were grounded in the fundamentals and operations of our government — “The Why’s and How’s of American Government”. There was no shortage of primary text books for American Government but I found myself continually searching for a supplemental text to augment my particular approach to the subject. Having graduated from HBCUs and PWIs in both undergraduate and graduate studies I wanted to ensure that our students at North Carolina Central University were keenly aware of their places in American government, and how certain portions of American government were designed around and directed particularly towards their ancestors. Obviously I never found the exact supplemental text I was looking for, so I decided to write my own. So here it is — “The Electoral College and the Black and Brown Vote”. In preparing for this book I discovered that most Americans know very little about the system they use to select the leaders that will govern them, and that those that continue to harbor slaveocracy tendencies are working hard to keep the Electoral College as it is. In all things political we should start with the authorization — “where is the authority found for what we’re doing or professing to do?”. Some call this the “enabling legislation”. In this case the enabling legislation for the Electoral College is the 12th Amendment to the Constitution. In this book I examine the 12th Amendment from the prospects of the presidential election, and the responsibilities of the various states, electors and voters. I talk about the Amendment’s effect on large states and small states, and a large portion of the book is devoted to the Amendment’s impact on Black and Brown voters. This is a book for all people; students, teachers, regular citizens, and voters and non-voters. We must fully understand our electoral system if we want to ensure that it is as fair and efficient as it could possible be.

It chronicles his years at North Carolina State College, where he was student president for two terms, his transformation from a campaign volunteer for Terry Sanford to a political insider at both the state and national levels, and his close relationships with Sanford and his key adviser Bert Bennett. The author then discusses how Hunt, still unknown to most of the public, defeated candidates with more campaign money to become lieutenant governor of the state in 1972, and describes his first two successful campaigns for the governorship, and the actions he took and programs he implemented in his first term as governor.

"Fritz" Hollings, a key figure in South Carolina and national political developments in the second half of the twentieth century. Throughout his career Hollings was renowned for his willingness to voice unpleasant truths, as when he called for the peaceful acceptance of racial desegregation at Clemson University in 1963 and acknowledged the existence of widespread poverty and malnutrition in South Carolina in 1969. David T. Ballantyne uses Hollings's career as a lens for examining the upheaval in southern politics and society after World War II. Hollings's political career began in 1948, when he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. He served as governor from 1959 to 1963 and then as a U.S. senator from 1966 until he retired in 2005. Ballantyne illuminates Hollings's role in forging a "southern strategy" that helped move southern Democrats away from openly endorsing white supremacy and toward acknowledging the interests of racial minorities, though this approach was halting and reluctant at times. Unlike many southern politicians who emerged as reactionary figures during the civil rights era, Hollings adapted to the changing racial politics of the 1960s while pursuing a clear course—Vietnam War hawk, fiscal conservative, regional economic booster, and free-trade opponent. While Hollings was at times an atypical southern senator, his behavior in the 1960s and 1970s served as a model for survival as a southern Democrat. His approach to voting rights, military spending, and social and cultural issues was mirrored by many southern Democrats between the 1970s and 1990s. Hollings's career demonstrated an alternative to hard-edged political conservatism, one that was conspicuously successful throughout his Senate tenure.
