Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Book Carbonate Depositional Environments

Download or read book Carbonate Depositional Environments written by Peter A. Scholle and published by AAPG. This book was released on 1983 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book you need to improve your interpretations of carbonates. Using a systematic treatment of the entire subject of carbonate depositional environments, this unique book is specifically designed for use by the non-specialist -- the petroleum geologist or field geologist -- who uses carbonate depositional environments in facies reconstructions and environmental intepretations. This classic work, covering settings from non-marine to deep water, focuses on the recognition of depositional environments with extenive use of color diagrams and photographs of sedimentary structures and facies assemblages. Although the ultimate purpose of this text is to improve exploration for oil, gas, and mineral deposits, it also includes environments not normally considered to be particularly prospective for oil and gas in an attempt to provide as complete a framework as possible for recognition of environments. Suitable for use as a textbook, this book is also an invaluable reference fo the specialist or advanced graduate student. It provides perspective on large-scale influences on carbonate depositional envionments such as tectonic patterns, fluctuations of sea level, variations of climate, and evolutionary patterns of organisms. --

Book Limestone in the Built Environment

Download or read book Limestone in the Built Environment written by Bernard J. Smith and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2010 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limestone is a highly successful and widely used building material, found in many important historic buildings and new monuments around the world. Whilst its success reflects its durability under a wide range of environmental conditions, there are still important questions surrounding the selection, use and conservation of build-ing limestones. In order to make best use of new limestone today, and to conserve old limestone most effectively, we need to bring modern research methods to bear on understanding the characteris-tics of different limestones, what mortars to use, and how key lime-stones have responded to polluted atmospheres. This volume brings together recent inter-disciplinary research on these issues, illustrating the diversity of innovative techniques that are now be-ing applied to furthering our understanding of building limestones.

Book Interpretations of the Depositional Environments for the Providence Limestone Member of the Sturgis Formation Upper Pennsylvanian in Muhlenburg and Ohio Counties Kentucky

Download or read book Interpretations of the Depositional Environments for the Providence Limestone Member of the Sturgis Formation Upper Pennsylvanian in Muhlenburg and Ohio Counties Kentucky written by Mary C. Perkinson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lower limestone unit represents a rapid transgressive carbonate unit characterized by a shallow open marine environment with low to moderate energy and deposited on an irregular topographic surface (depressions and high areas which correspond with protected lagoonal ponds and algal mounds). All of these conditions indicate a depositional environment similar to the "Bank Model" which is typical of mid-continent Pennsylvanian carbonate units.

Book Atlas of Coastal Ecosystems in the Western Gulf of California

Download or read book Atlas of Coastal Ecosystems in the Western Gulf of California written by Markes E. Johnson and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gulf of California is one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it is also important to earth and marine scientists who work far beyond the area. In text and an accompanying CD-ROM with stunning satellite images, this atlas captures the dynamics of natural cycles in the fertility of the Gulf of California that have been in near-continuous operation for more than five million years. The book is designed to answer key questions that link the health of coastal ecosystems with the regionÕs evolutionary history: What was the richness of ÒfossilÓ ecosystems in the Gulf of California? How has it changed over time? Which ecosystems are most amenable to conservation? With an emphasis on the intricate workings of the Gulf, a team of scientists led by Markes E. Johnson and Jorge Ledesma-V‡zquez explores how marine invertebrates such as corals and bivalves, as well as certain algae, contribute to the operation of a vast Òorganic engineÓ that acts as a significant carbon trap. The Atlas reveals that the role of these organisms in the ecology of the Gulf was greatly underestimated in the past. The organisms that live in these environments (or provide the sediments for beaches and dunes) are mass producers of calcium carbonate. Until now, no book has considered the centrality of calcium carbonate production as it functions today across multiple ecosystems and how it has evolved over time. An important work of scholarship that also evokes the regionÕs natural splendor, the Atlas will be of interest to a wide range of scientists, including geologists, paleontologists, marine biologists, ecologists, and conservation biologists.

This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has prepared this environmental impact statement (EIS) in response to an application submitted by Northwest Medical Isotopes, LLC (NWMI) for a construction permit for the NWMI medical radioisotope production facility. The EIS includes the analysis that evaluates the environmental impacts of the proposed action and considers the following alternatives to the proposed action: (1) the no-action alternative (i.e., the construction permit is denied), (2) one alternative site, and (3) two alternative technologies. After weighing the environmental, economic, technical, and other benefits against environmental and other costs, and considering reasonable alternatives, the NRC staff's recommendation, unless safety issues mandate otherwise, is to issue a construction permit to NWMI. The NRC staff based its recommendation on the following factors: the NRC staff's review of the NWMI Environmental Report and responses to requests for additional information; the NRC staff's consultation with Federal, State, and local agencies and Tribal officials; the NRC staff's independent environmental review; and the NRC staff's consideration of public comments Related products: Other products published by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission can be found here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/agency/nuclear-regulatory-commission-nrc Environment & Nature resources collection can be found here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/catalog/environment-nature
