Book The Entry of Low Cost Airlines into the Market for Long Haul Flights

Download or read book The Entry of Low Cost Airlines into the Market for Long Haul Flights written by Jakob Stemmler and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim (Fakultät für Rechtswissenschaft und Volkswirtschaftslehre, Abteilung Volkswirtschaftslehre), language: English, abstract: The entry of low-cost carriers (LCCs) in the early 1990ies revolutionized the European airline industry. Before the LCCs entered the European short-haul market, incumbent full service carriers (FSCs) were able to operate relatively unhindered. Supported by many deregulations, LCCs set their focus on a cost base as low as possible, so they were able to offer fares tremendously lower than incumbent players. Even though they took some market share from the FSCs, the main success was based on the ability to reach new customer segments. Passengers, previously travelling by car or long-distance busses, took advantage of newly affordable airline fares and were willing to incur limited comfort. Now, around 20 years after the first entry of European LCCs, the short-haul market is not expected to continue growing significantly. Hence, if the LCCs want to continue their expansion, they need a ‘new market’, and it seems just like a question of time until they add long-haul routes to their route network. Nevertheless, the long- and short-haul market are comparable just to a limited amount. As we will see in the following analyses and discussions, several specific characteristics require fundamental changes in the current LCC business model, which is optimized for short-haul operations. The focus point of this thesis is the development of an auspicious entry mode, based on theoretical economic frameworks. In comparison to the short-haul market, competitive interactions between incumbent FSCs and entering LCCs are expected to be much more intense on long-haul routes. This is based on the fact that LCCs will not be able to sustain their high cost advantages also on long-haul routes. For long-haul flights it is also not possible to reduce provided comfort and additional services in such a way the LCCs currently do on their short-haul operations. Hence, on long-haul routes, entering LCCs and incumbent FSCs will be active much more in the same market than they currently do, which implies a much higher degree of competition. This provides several points of contact for game theoretical considerations, as we will see in the following chapters.

Book Low Cost Carriers

Download or read book Low Cost Carriers written by Stephen Ison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low cost carriers (LCCs) represent one of the most exciting and dynamic yet often contentious developments in recent commercial aviation history. Formed as a direct result of policies of airline deregulation and liberalisation that were initiated in the United States in the late 1970s before being implemented in certain European, Australasian, Latin American and other world markets from the mid-1990s onwards to encourage competition, LCCs have been responsible for progressively reconfiguring the spatial patterns, operational practices and passenger experiences of flight. In the process, they have enabled growing numbers of people to fly to more places, more frequently, and at lower cost than had been previously possible. In so doing, however, they have generated a number of socio-economic and environmental challenges. The 23 essays included in this volume provide a detailed insight into the emergence, expansion and evolution of the low cost carrier sector worldwide. The volume covers deregulation and liberalisation of the global airline sector, the business models and operating characteristics of low cost carriers, the changing nature of the airline/airport relationship, LCC network characteristics, issues of pricing and competition and the current impacts and likely future trajectories.

Book Low Cost Carriers in Emerging Countries

Download or read book Low Cost Carriers in Emerging Countries written by John Bowen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-Cost Airline Carriers in Emerging Countries traces the development of low-cost carriers (LCCs) in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, examining airlines that have become significant players in their home markets but little known at a global scale. The book maps the geography of the LCC phenomenon, explaining the starkly varying success of budget airlines, and assessing their current social, economic and environmental impacts. The book concludes with insights into the future potential of the LCC phenomenon along with its global ramifications. Beginning with Southwest Airlines in the 1970s, low-cost carriers (LCCs) have democratized air travel around the world, fostering huge increases in airline traffic and transforming the airline industry. At the same time however, the ascent of these budget airlines has exacerbated aviation-related problems such as aircraft noise, airport congestion, greenhouse gas emissions and more. LCCs have been extensively studied in the US and Europe but not in emerging regions of the globe. Yet the impact of such airlines is greatest in low- and middle-income economies where only a small fraction of the population has ever flown, and where competition from alternative modes (road, rail) is weak. Examines the evolution of low cost carriers around the world, how established airlines react to their entry and the wide-ranging societal implications for individual countries and the world Places emerging countries' LCCs into a global context, comparing them to their US and European counterparts Offers original quantitative analysis of LCC networks at several spatial scales (global, regional, national, airport vs. airport) using global schedule data from OAG Includes professionally produced maps of representative airlines networks

Book Evolution of Low cost Airlines in Different Global Regions

Download or read book Evolution of Low cost Airlines in Different Global Regions written by Akash Bharat Raigangar and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-cost air carriers have been growing aggressively in many regions around the world and today offer a significant proportion of the available flight and seat capacity in the markets where they operate. This thesis studies the airline capacity evolution of low-cost carriers (LCCs) between 2009 and 2018 in several different types of market regions, both long and short-haul as well as mature versus emerging air travel markets. Between 2009 and 2018, domestic India and domestic China had the fastest growth in total airline capacity, growing at a CAGR of 12.0% and 11.1% respectively. The more mature markets saw much slower growth - the intra-Europe region grew at a 5.6% CAGR while both the domestic US and domestic Australia regions grew at a CAGR less than 3% during the 10-year period. The domestic India region had the highest gain in low-cost carrier share of capacity, which grew by 26 points - from 43% of domestic capacity in 2009 to 69% in 2018. The growth of low-cost carrier capacity share was much smaller or even negative in other regions: 10 points in intra-Europe (from 40% to 50%), 9 points in domestic China (from 3% to 12%), 9 points in domestic US (31% to 40%), 7 points in the transatlantic region (2% to 9%) and -22 points in domestic Australia (50% to 28%). In the mature markets analyzed (except Australia), much of the growth in the low-cost carrier sector has come from ultra-low-cost carriers adding capacity as traditional LCCs are now moving upmarket due to increasing costs. While total capacities in the emerging markets grew rapidly, the growth has come from different sources. LCCs in India have grown significantly, primarily due to the very large demand for low-fare air travel in the country. On the other hand, much of the growth in China has come from legacy carriers; the slower growth in the Chinese LCC sector is explained by unsupportive government regulations and a lack of low-cost airport infrastructure. LCCs operating in the transatlantic region have also seen slow growth due to the various difficulties of operating low-cost in long haul sectors, with many LCCs going bankrupt and ceasing operations.

Book Low Cost Carriers Evolution Strategies and Performance

Download or read book Low Cost Carriers Evolution Strategies and Performance written by Vanessa Blaha and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2003-07-14 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,7 (A-), University of Cologne (Business Planning and Logistics), course: Global Competition in the Aviation Industy, language: English, abstract: In the last three decades low-cost carriers (hence forward referred to as LCCs) have captivated travellers by making the world smaller through cheap short-haul flights. Travellers in the United States have benefited from this concept since the 1970s; whereas, the development in Europe has been much more recent. Lately, LCCs have been quite a hot topic especially since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Many LCCs have amazed investors with their financial performance, as they successfully earned profits in a time when most conventional carriers reported major losses. In Europe, LCCs have entered the market in order to gain market share and to take part in the success of the business. In Germany, the LCC market has taken off with the emergence of two new carriers in the end of 2002. To best understand the low-cost concept, the evolution of LCCs in the United States and in Europe is examined in the second chapter. Furthermore, the background of the most successful LCC Southwest, still being the role model for other LCCs, is presented. In the third chapter the competition theory of Michael Porter is discussed in order to be able to analyse the competitive strategies followed by the LCCs in the chapter four. The fifth chapter gives a brief outline on the most striving marketing strategies among LCCs. Marketing strategies are examined in the fifth chapter. The performance of LCCs is analysed in the sixth chapter, and a comparison to the performance of conventional carriers is conducted. An outlook for the future can be found in chapter seven.

Book Aviation and Tourism

Download or read book Aviation and Tourism written by Anne Graham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport is an essential element of tourism, providing the vital link between the tourist generating areas and destinations. Good accessibility, which is determined by the transport services provided, is a fundamental condition for the development of any tourist destination. Moreover the transport industry can be a major beneficiary of tourism because of the additional passenger demand that may be generated. Aviation is an increasingly important mode of transport for tourism markets. Whilst geography has meant that, in modern times, air travel has always been the dominant mode for long distance travel and much international tourism, moves towards deregulation, and in particular the emergence of the low cost carrier sector, have also increased aviation's significance for short and medium haul tourism trips. Thus developments in aviation can have very major implications for many leisure and business tourism markets. However the characteristics and needs of leisure travellers are generally so very different from business travellers that this necessitates a separate consideration of these markets if a detailed understanding of the relationship with aviation is to be gained. In spite of the obvious closeness between the aviation and tourism industries, there are very few specialist texts on this subject. Most tourism focused books consider aviation as just one component of the tourism industry which needs to be discussed, whereas aviation specialist texts rarely concentrate on just leisure travel. In addition there is very little literature that gives a detailed appreciation of the complexities and potential conflicts associated with the development of coherent and effective aviation and tourism policies. Therefore it is the aim of this book to fill this important gap which exists with a comprehensive, in-depth study of the relationship between aviation and leisure travel. The book deals exclusively with issues related to the relationship between aviation and leisure travel. It does this with an analysis of the theoretical concepts relevant to the subject area combined with a detailed investigation of current practice within the aviation and tourism industries. Each chapter is illustrated with case study material that will reinforce the understanding of the issues that are being examined.
