Book Revealing New Worlds

Download or read book Revealing New Worlds written by Suzanne Le-May Sheffield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of nineteenth-century science often tells a tale of a masculinized professionalizing domain. Scientific man increasingly pushed women out, marginalized them and constructed them as naturally feminine creatures incapable of intellectual work, particularly scientific work. Yet many women participated in various scientific endeavours throughout the century. This work asks why, when the waters were so inviting, did women dive deeply into the swirling maelstrom of scientific practice, scientific controversies and scientific writing? Victorian women certainly recognised that male naturalists were not always willing to welcome them warmly into their inner sanctum of scientific work honour and prestige. Moreover, they recognised the existence of a more general social stigma that thwarted any woman's participation in intellectual endeavours. However, their fascination with algology, botany and entomology led Margaret Gatty, Marianne North and Eleanor Ormerod to reach beyond acceptable gendered roles, to undertake field work, to paint, write, popularize, experiment and discover. Each exhibited a passion for their chosen field, a need for intellectual, artistic and scientific work, and a desire for scientific recognition and renown. This book examines the ability of women to understand themselves and respond to their needs as complex human beings. Within a framework of socially and scientifically constructed norms, these Victorial women use d science as a path to self-awareness and intellectual accomplishment.

Book The Aurelian Legacy a History of British Butterflies and their Collectors

Download or read book The Aurelian Legacy a History of British Butterflies and their Collectors written by Michael Salmon and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the collecting of butterflies is today an emotive subject, it is impossible to separate a history of British butterflies from a history of their collectors, without whose activities our knowledge of the identification, occurrence, distribution, and variation of British butterflies would be much the poorer. Liberally laced with contemporary quotations, this book brings to life the past three hundred years of butterfly study, with details of early societies, collecting equipment, biographies of 101 deceased lepidopterists, with portraits where available, as well as the chequered history in Britain of some 35 species of butterfly. The colour plates include some of the finest butterfly illustrations ever.

Book The Entomologist s Text Book

Download or read book The Entomologist s Text Book written by J. O. Westwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomologist's Text Book: An Introduction to the Natural History, Structure, Physiology and Classification of Insects, Including the Crustacea and Arachnida It has ever been my wish to instil into the minds of those who feel an interest in the science, the idea that the mere collecting of spe. Cimens, or of attempting their classification, could not be compared, in an intellectual point of view, or with reference to the amount of pleasure derivable from the subject, with the investigation of habits of the animals, and the variations in their structures depen dent thereon. To those conversant with Entomological Literature, it was evident that there existed the want of a work like the pre sent, which should convey the modern elements of the science in as popular a form as possible; and it appeared to me, that this work might be so written, as to be the means of extending this leading principle of philosophical zoology.
