Book excerpt: As an historical figure Mary Queen of Scots has been perpetually represented on canvas, page and stage, and has captured the British imagination since the time of her death in 1587. The 'real' Mary Stuart however has remained an enigma. Mary Queen of Scots: Romance and Nation sheds light on Mary's life by exploring four main themes: * the history of Mary's representation in Britain from the late Tudor period focusing on key periods in the formation of the British identity and closely analysing several texts against a background of the visual, musical and literary works of each period * the reasons why those representing Mary have been so conscious that her image was largely a debatable fiction * the identification of symbolic styles, using Mary to reveal the habits of representation in each historical period * The link between the image of Mary Stuart and Britain's long struggle to define itself as a single nation, focusing on the roles of gender and religion in this development.

Ultimately, the deadly game of power she played and lost against her envious cousin, Elizabeth I, cost her not only her kingdom, but also her life. Betrayed by those she trusted most, pampered and adored even as she was led to her own beheading, she remained an enigma. Four centuries after her death, the legendary life of Mary Stuart Queen of Scots, as retold by Alexandre Dumas, still mesmerizes the listener with its drama and intrigue.

Book The Mystery of Mary Stuart Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mystery of Mary Stuart Classic Reprint written by Andrew Lang and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Mary Stuart In revising this book I have corrected a number of misreadings in the Arabic numerals of dates of years. I owe much to Mr. David Bruce - Gardyne and Mr. Hay Fleming. In deference to other criticisms offered privately, I have somewhat modified certain phrases about the hypothetical forged letter, as quoted by Moray and Lennox (pp. 211-236). That such a letter once existed is, of course, an inference on which readers must form their own opinion. The passage as to the site of Damley's house, Kirk o' Field (pp. 124-131), ought to have been banished to an Appendix. On any theory the existence of the town wall, shown in the contemporary chart opposite p. 130, is a difficulty. The puzzle is caused by the chart of 1567, reduced in the design given at p. 130. In all published forms the drawing is given as it is here. But it reverses the points of the compass, east and west. Book The Mystery of Mary Stuart

Download or read book The Mystery of Mary Stuart written by Andrew Lang and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-04 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Mystery of Mary Stuart' is a fascinating retelling of the life and death of Mary, Queen of Scots. Born to the throne of Scotland at just six days old, Mary's life was plagued by political turmoil and religious strife. Her marriage to Francis, the Dauphin of France, brought her both love and loss, while her return to Scotland was met with tension and opposition. Despite her pragmatic and tolerant rule, Mary's marriage to Lord Darnley and subsequent imprisonment led to her eventual execution. Author and anthropologist Andrew Lang delves into the life of this tragic figure, offering a fresh perspective on the events that led to her downfall and cemented her place in history as a romanticized icon.
