Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Englishman in ChinaDaily the motion of the Ship thinned our ranks, until it became evident to the stewards that one table was enough. I was in a very agreeable set, and long shall I remember that voyage in the Indus, and the kind old captain. It was by far the best part of my long, long journey.I think I shall stay about a month in Egypt, and then on, on, on to the Flowery Land. As this will be the first letter you will receive, and as it, I suppose, will be handed the round, I shall not only make it long, but Shall keep it open, so as to be able to dot down the voyage.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Englishman in China, Vol. 1: During the Victorian Era A copious and facile writer, he has left singularly little in the way of personal history. The only journal he seems ever to have kept was consigned by him to oblivion, a few early dates and remarks having alone been rescued. When in recent years he was approached by friends on the subject of auto biography, he was wont to reply, My life is in my work; by that I am content to be remembered. We must needs therefore take him at his word and judge by the fruit what was the nature of the tree. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chinaman: In His Own Stories At Chinese life through Chinese fiction. In plot the stories are primitive and puerile, and the translator has sometimes doubted whether it was worth while to print them. Chinese names always ruin a Chinese story for the average reader, and yet to give English equivalents is to destroy the piquancy of the narrative, and load it with an insufferable burden of grandiose Johnsonese. In some cases, where it has been pos sible, the English equivalents of the names have been given, and in other cases the Chinese forms of the names are retained. Over against the simplicity and feebleness of the ruling plots and motives of the tales must be set the fact that they contain a very percep. 'we are more than ever concerned in the vast possibilities, the material development, and moral characteristics of this ancient people, who are destined to occupy such a prominent place in the world's life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Englishman in China, Vol. 1: During the Victorian Era Reminiscences of the Far East called up by the death of Sir Rutherford Alcock in November 1897 prompted the writer to send a contribution on the subject to 'Blackwood's Magazine.' Being appreciated by the family, the article suggested to them some more substantial memorial of the deceased statesman, a scheme with which the writer fell in the more readily that it seemed to harmonise with the task which friends had been already urging upon him - that of writing of some account of occurrences in the Far East during his own residence there. For there was no other name round which these events could be so consistently grouped during the thirty years when British policy was a power in that part of the world. As Consul and Minister Alcock was so interwoven with the history of the period that neither the life of the man nor the times in which he lived could be treated apart. Book Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf

Download or read book Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf written by Alexander Bubb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest among Victorian readers in classical literature from Asia has been greatly underestimated. The popularity of the Arabian Nights and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is well documented. Yet this was also an era in which freethinkers consulted the Quran, in which schoolchildren were given abridgements of the Ramayana to read, in which names like 'Kalidasa' and 'Firdusi' were carved on the façades of public libraries, and in which women'sbook clubs discussed Japanese poetry. But for the most part, such readers were not consulting the specialist publications of scholarly orientalists. What then were the translations that catalysed these intercultural encounters? Based on a unique methodology marrying translation theory with empirical techniques developedby historians of reading, this book shines light for the first time on the numerous amateur translators or 'popularizers', who were responsible for making these texts accessible and disseminating them to the Victorian general readership.Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf explains the process whereby popular translations were written, published, distributed to bookshops and libraries, and ultimately consumed by readers. It uses the working papers and correspondence of popularizers to demonstrate their techniques and motivations, while the responses of contemporary readers are traced through the pencil marginalia they left behind in dozens of original copies. In spite of their typically limited knowledge ofsource-languages, Asian Classics argues that popularizers produced versions more respectful of the complexity, cultural difference, and fundamental untranslatability of Asian texts than the professional orientalists whose work they were often adapting. The responses of their readers, likewise, frequently deviatedfrom interpretive norms, and it is proposed that this combination of eccentric translators and unorthodox readers triggered 'flights of translation', whereby historical individuals can be seen to escape the hegemony of orientalist forms of knowledge.
