Book The English Poetic Mind Classic Reprint

Download or read book The English Poetic Mind Classic Reprint written by Charles Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Poetic Mind The following essays are based on two convictions (i) that Troilus and Cressida is of a great deal more importance in a study of Shakespeare than has generally been allowed, (2) that the central crisis of Troilus is in direct poetic relation to the culminating crisis in Wordsworth's account of his own history in the Prelude. From these convictions I went on to consider whether that crisis had any parallels in the work of the other English poets, and whether it might, not unreasonably, be related to the Satan of Milton, compared with the Nightingale of Keats, and contrasted with the Lancelot of Tennyson. Upon this subject it would have been possible to write a book either of five hundred or of two hundred pages; I chose two hundred with equal reluctance and decision. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetic Mind I have suggested for literary investigation a compromise method. Truths drawn from the poets, though entirely lacking in inductive evidence, may be checked by tests of a strictly scientific kind. If, for example, the statement of a poet on a matter of importance connected with the present subject, though standing unproved, is yet found to agree with the state ment of another, it is strengthened; if further this agreement is found among many poets, of different ages and countries, the consensus is an argument of the strongest kind - stronger indeed than any single inductive proof. Right conclusions also show an agreement of another kind; they have a way of agreeing with each other, of fitting into and explaining each other, and of readily forming part of a larger structure. The test of them is whether they will work, and this test is also entirely sci entific. Finally, wrong conclusions are sterile, right ones pro ductive; the former die when the book containing them is closed; the latter are alive and remain so, and soon gather to themselves other opinions. A little time applies the test, and however it may be in the practical sciences, in the investigation of poetry there is no hurry. One writing on the present subject, then, need not be too much afraid of promoting error. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The English Poetic Mind

Download or read book The English Poetic Mind written by Charles Williams and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The English Poetic Mind’ (1932) is Williams’ discussion of the source of the poetic impulse, creativity and drive behind three prominent English poets: Shakespeare, Milton and Wordsworth. The text is reflective of Williams’ imaginative and critical approach to literature and his appreciation of poetry and verse. Charles Williams (1886-1945) was a British theologian, playwright, novelist and poet. As a member of the ‘Inklings’ literary group at Oxford, his work supported a strong sense of narrative. For Williams, spiritual exchanges were an undercurrent to life, and his Christian fantasy writing, such as 'Descent into Hell' (1937), earned him many followers. This classic work is now being republished in a new modern edition with a specially commissioned introductory biography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flower of the Mind: A Choice Among the Best Poems Partial collections of English poems, decided by a common subject or bounded by narrow dates and periods of literary history, are made at very short intervals, and the makers are safe from the reproach of proposing their own personal taste as a guide for the reading of others. But a general Anthology gathered from the whole of English literature - the whole from Chaucer to Wordsworth - by a gatherer intent upon nothing except the quality of poetry, is a more rare enter prise. It is hardly to be made without tempting the suspicion - nay, hardly without seeming to hazard the confession - of some measure of self confidence. Nor can even the desire to enter upon that labour be a frequent one - the desire of the heart of one for whom poetry is verit ably 'the complementary life' to set up a pale for inclusion and exclusion, to add honours, to multiply homage, to cherish, to restore, to protest, to proclaim, to depose; and to gain the consent of a multitude of readers to all those acts. Many years, then - some part of a centuryflmay easily pass between the publication of one general anthology and the making of another. This book was released on 2017-07-23 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Household Book of English Poetry The first question which I asked myself, when I resumed a purpose long ago entertained, and then for a long while laid aside, of publishing such a selection of English Poetry as the present, was this, namely, whether Mr. Palgrave by his Golden Treasury had not so occupied the ground that there was no place for one who should come after. The selection is one made with so exact an acquaintance with the sources from which such a Trea sury as his should be replenished, with so fine a taste in regard of what should be admitted there, that this was the conclusion to which at the first I was disposed to arrive. But on further consideration I saw reason to change my mind. The volume which I meditated was on so different a scheme and plan from his, that, while no doubt I should sometimes go over ground which he had gone over before, it seemed likely that for the most part our paths would be different, and the poems which I should select not identical with those already chosen by him. This to so great an extent has proved the case, that of more than three hundred pieces which compose this volume, less than sixty have appeared in his. And. Book Thomas Hardy s Universe A Study of a Poet s Mind Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-04-22 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Hardy's Universe: A Study of a Poet's Mind Without criticizing Hardy's philosophy as one would criticize, say, Spinoza's, conceiving it as a system really warranted to lift the burthen of the mystery, dissecting it, and examining each detail with the bright and merciless instruments of a rigid induction and deduction, one may without great qualms yield to the temptation of observing, broadly, how the tentative and unadjusted scheme of the greatest living English poet fits in with those of such thinkers, also vocal to tragedy, who have chosen to eschew imaginative writing and to expose their attitudes more strictly in accordance with the laws of logic. If, i'ndeed, one may attempt to come to grips with the intellectual content of Hardy (and surely one may l - a more exhilarating mental sport can scarcely be imagined), it is as impossible to succeed in such an attempt without indicating parallelisms from philosophers as it is to discuss his art without pointing out literary parallels. In particular, it is quite impossible, from the first, to ignore Schopen hauer, - and before one has proceeded very far, Schopenhauer is found to have usurped practically the whole discussion. Book Longman s English Classics Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Longman's English Classics IN this edition of selected minor poems of Milton I have endeavored to keep clearly in mind the purpose for which it is primarily intended, that of providing proper materials for the careful study, under the immediate direction of a teacher, of one of: the English Classics prescribed by the uniform requirements in English which have been generally adopted by our colleges. In other words, I have endeavored to furnish an apparatus of Introductions and Notes which, in the hands of competent teachers, may be useful in fostering and developing the literary appreciation of the pupil. I have chosen to point out the poetic beauty of an epithet rather than to discuss its etymology, and to trace the genesis of the category of literature to which a poem belongs rather than to dwell upon a point of histor ical grammar. I have tried, too, to interest the pupil in the interpretation of disputed passages, and to enable him to follow the transmission of thought and expression from poet to poet and, from age to age by means of abundant, but, I trust, not too diffuse quotation. Because of these peculiarities, we find that in the year 17] I. The Lord Treasurer of England called upon him to assist in bringing about a much-desired treaty with France. Dear Matt, wrote Bolingbroke to the poet. Hide the nakedness of thy country, and give the best turn thy fertile brain will furnish thee with to the blunders of thy countrymen. Who are much better politicians than the French are poets. Another notable exception among commercially-minded poets is to be found in the author of this collection of verses. Entitled Waifs of the Mind. Nothing approaching a dalliance or a dawdling attitude of mind can be found in the life history of Mr. Newson, who, for over fifteen years. Has held the arduous and important office of Deputy Provincial Treasurer of the Province of Alberta. For a certainty, in this capacity, our poet can have no delicate susceptibilities concerning the accumulation of uncleanly cash; no obsessions that the sacred claw of literature must never. Never scrape for a living; no beliefs that a poet must wear his life away in isolation from his kind. There was once a clever man who warned his age to beware of dreamers, they were such practical persons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Helicon: A Selection of Modern Poetry There is a general complaint amongst the children of song, that. The taste for poetry is on the decline amongst us; and something like a disposition to fear that, amid the progress of utilitarian objects, there is danger of its total extinction in the land. If the question thus raised were to be decided by the degree of attention which the hard of our day is enabled to com mand for his inspirations, as compared with the enthusiasm which hailed the songs of his brethren twenty years ago, there would, certainly, be some reason for these gloomy anticipations. But the poet should be the last to despair of the indefeasible ascend ancy and final triumph of his art. A more philosophical View of the matter will assuredly convince him that there is nothing in the immediate neglect under which it lies, whence any infer ence is to be drawn as to its ultimate decline. Its outward fortunes, like those of everything whose manifestations make their appeal to the public taste, must be subject to the fluctuations of the national mind; but its essential influence, as an interpreter of all the natural and moral aspects of the world, and as speaking to the universal passions of the human heart, has a sway as old.
