    Book Details:
  • Author : Alexandru Popescu
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2018-01-16

Download or read book Petre Tutea written by Alexandru Popescu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petre Tutea (1902-91) was one of the outstanding Christian dissident intellectuals of the Communist era in Eastern Europe. Revered as a saint by some, he spent thirteen years as a prisoner of conscience and twenty-eight years under house arrest at the hands of the Securitate. This book explores his unique response to the horrors of torture and 're-education' and reveals the experience of a whole generation detained in the political prisons. Tutea’s understanding of human needs and how they can be fulfilled even amidst extreme adversity not only reflects huge learning and great brilliance of mind, but also offers a spiritual vision grounded in personal experience of the Romanian Gulag. Following the fall of the Ceausescus, he has begun to emerge as a significant contributor to ecumenical Christian discourse and to understanding of wider issues of truth and reconciliation in the contemporary world. As Tutea's pupil and scribe for twelve years, as a psychiatrist, and as a theologian, Alexandru Popescu is uniquely placed to present the work of this twentieth-century Confessor of the faith. Drawing on bibliographical sources which include unpublished or censored manuscripts and personal conversations with Tutea and with other prisoners of conscience in Romania, Popescu presents extensive translations of Tutea, which make his thought accessible to the English-speaking reader for the first time. Through his stature as a human being and his authority as a thinker, Petre Tutea challenges us to question many of our assumptions. The choice he presents between ’sacrifice’ and ’moral suicide’ focuses us on the very essence of religion and human personhood. Resisting any ultimate separation of theology and spirituality, his work affirms hope and love as the sole ground upon which truth can be based. At the same time, hope and love are not mere ideal emotions, but are known and lived in engagement with the real world - in politics, economics, science, ecol

Book The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Poetry

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Poetry written by Fran Brearton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty chapters, written by leading scholars across the world, describe the latest thinking on modern Irish poetry. The Handbook begins with a consideration of Yeats's early work, and the legacy of the 19th century. The broadly chronological areas which follow, covering the period from the 1910s through to the 21st century, allow scope for coverage of key poetic voices in Ireland in their historical and political context. From the experimentalism of Beckett, MacGreevy, and others of the modernist generation, to the refashioning of Yeats's Ireland on the part of poets such as MacNeice, Kavanagh, and Clarke mid-century, through to the controversially titled post-1969 'Northern Renaissance' of poetry, this volume will provide extensive coverage of the key movements of the modern period. The Handbook covers the work of, among others, Paul Durcan, Thomas Kinsella, Brendan Kennelly, Seamus Heaney, Paul Muldoon, Michael Longley, Medbh McGuckian, and Ciaran Carson. The thematic sections interspersed throughout - chapters on women's poetry, religion, translation, painting, music, stylistics - allow for comparative studies of poets north and south across the century. Central to the guiding spirit of this project is the Handbook's consideration of poetic forms, and a number of essays explore the generic diversity of poetry in Ireland, its various manipulations, reinventions and sometimes repudiations of traditional forms. The last essays in the book examine the work of a 'new' generation of poets from Ireland, concentrating on work published in the last two decades by Justin Quinn, Leontia Flynn, Sinead Morrissey, David Wheatley, Vona Groarke, and others.

Book Trade Names in Contemporary Romanian Public Space

Download or read book Trade Names in Contemporary Romanian Public Space written by Alina Bughesiu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a linguistic research study of trade names, especially names of firms (in the production and services sector), shops, eating/drinking houses and accommodation locations. It identifies and analyses the onomastic behaviour characteristic of the field of trades in contemporary Romanian public space, in addition to delineating a representative naming pattern for every subcategory of commercial onomastics investigated, according to three coordinates: (1) lexical and grammatical structure, (2) semantics (pointing out different levels of meaning), and (3) language preference. Methodologically, this book relies on the theoretical configuration provided by onomastics, functional, cognitive and generative grammar, semiotics (in the interpretation of trade names as iconic, indexical and symbolic signs), and pragmatics (observing that trade names underlie speech acts). Moreover, the study also refers to psycholinguistics, underlining the cognitive and affective mechanisms that are involved in the creation and use of trade names. The way in which commercial designations behave in society (especially how they contribute to the characterisation of a community both linguistically and culturally) is analysed using the tools of sociolinguistics. From the same point of view, the current context of trade names is also described, with reference to the influence of the English language and the American sociocultural mindset (as instruments of globalisation) on the Romanian language and culture, and particularly on the unprecedented development of commercial onomastics. The methodology employed in this book furthermore includes theoretical precepts specific to linguistic polyphony, emphasising the similarity between trade names and unconventional anthroponyms (particularly nicknames and virtual names). Postcolonial studies, and post-communist studies, as a branch of this field of research, also play a role here. Finally, the reference to translation studies is made in order to be able to define trade names as cultural mediators in contemporary Romanian public space.

Book Contemporary Romanian Cinema

Download or read book Contemporary Romanian Cinema written by Dominique Nasta and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, audiences worldwide have become familiar with highly acclaimed films from the Romanian New Wave such as 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005), and 12:08 East of Bucharest (2006). However, the hundred or so years of Romanian cinema leading to these accomplishments have been largely overlooked. This book is the first to provide in-depth analyses of essential works ranging from the silent period to contemporary productions. In addition to relevant information on historical and cultural factors influencing contemporary Romanian cinema, this volume covers the careers of daring filmmakers who approached various genres despite fifty years of Communist censorship. An important chapter is dedicated to Lucian Pintilie, whose seminal work, Reconstruction (1969), strongly inspired Romania's 21st-century innovative output. The book's second half closely examines both the 'minimalist' trend (Cristian Mungiu, Cristi Puiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, Radu Muntean) and the younger, but no less inspired, directors who have chosen to go beyond the 1989 revolution paradigm by dealing with the complexities of contemporary Romania.

This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of a series of papers that look at three different aspects of the landscape as seen in dictionaries from across Europe. Multilingual diachronic case studies into lexicographical descriptions of flora, landscape features and colours concentrate on three supposedly simple words: daisies (Bellis perenis L.), hills and the colour red. The work is part of the ongoing LandLex initiative, originally developed as part of the COST ENeL - European Network for e-Lexicography - action. The group brings together researchers in lexicography and lexicology from across Europe and is dedicated to studying multilingual and diachronic issues in language. It aims to valorise the wealth of European language diversity as found in dictionaries by developing and testing new digital annotation tools and a historical morphological dictionary prototype. Book New Directions in Language Acquisition

Download or read book New Directions in Language Acquisition written by Laura Domíguez and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents sixteen new articles on the acquisition of Romance languages by both well-established researchers and vital new contributors to the field. Under a generative umbrella, the articles in this collection investigate the acquisition of French, Romanian, Spanish, Catalan, Italian and Portuguese across different contexts including first language acquisition, bilingual acquisition, specifically impaired first language acquisition, child L2 acquisition, second language acquisition, as well as first language attrition. This volume advances our understanding of how languages are acquired and how the study of Romance languages contributes to clarifying challenging open questions on the acquisition of key functional categories and other related phenomena. In particular, the articles included assess complexity as a relevant factor shaping children’s acquisition of syntactic and phonological structures, they refine crucial theoretical constructs such as parameter setting and language transfer, and propose language change as another crucial factor affecting the process of language acquisition and attrition.
