This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Banking System of the United States and Its Relation to the Money and Business of the Country The exact relations of our banking system to the business prosperity and money of the United States do not seem to be fully com prehended by our people. The writer is a business man, to whom his dealings with banks, in the ordinary course of business, has suggested the preparation of this little volume, in which he discusses that serv ice of banks to the community which to him seems at once the most important, and, at the same time, most commonly ignored. In his judgment there can be no proper understand ing of the monetary problems of the day unless the relation of the bank-credit money of the country to the money of the Govern ment is 'fully comprehended. Book History of the Bank of England and Its Financial Services to the State Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Bank of England and Its Financial Services to the State But though the Bank Of England was at its origin rather an incident Of State finance than the foundation Of a national banking system, its services to the State were very narrowly restricted by statute. It is curious to note that those exchequer functions which it afterwards under took, and Whose gradual assumption it is the principal Object of this book to trace, are not even referred to in the original act and charter. The fact is that the Bank Of England, like most really English institutions, was case made; it owed its form and functions not to systematic planning, but to attempts to meet emergencies as they from time to time arose. Thus the running cash note, which afterwards became the most effective banking instru ment Of the English bank, was an evasion, even if not (as Often alleged) a positive infraction of its charter. The Charter only contemplated an issue Of sealed bills, strictly limited in amount to the capital subscribed. If this was SO with its banking methods, it was equally the case with its relations to the Exchequer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Questions whose solution was doubtful and disputed have been settled to the satisfaction of intelligent men. The gold standard, which was described twelve years ago as a conspiracy against the human race, has been adopted in succession within that time by the United States, Russia, Austria - Hungary, Japan, and Mexico. Practically the only country remaining upon the silver standard is China, which is without a national monetary system, and even as these pages go to press despatches from China indicate that the government is planning such a national system to be based ultimately upon gold. Book Our Banking System

Download or read book Our Banking System written by Bernard Tindal Bosanquet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Banking System: And the Sufficiency or Insufficiency of Our Cash Reserves Although the question of the sufficiency or insufficiency of the cash reserves of the country is one which attracted considerable attention at the beginning of last year, when Mr. Goschen delivered his famous speech at Leeds, very little action has hitherto been taken in the matter; and the present may not be an inopportune time at which to consider whether any further action is required. For nearly two years the country has been labouring under one of those periods of depression which invariably follow any great crisis. There are now some signs of improvement, and of the return. Of better times but when the good time comes people very soon forget the lesson of the past. In the following treatise the Author has endeavoured to show that the banks are not altogether to blame for the periodical crises to which our banking system is at present exposed, and has made some attempt to indicate the nature and extent of the remedy. For his statistics he is indebted to Mr. Crump's Key to the London Market (which, unfortunately, has only been carried to the close of the year Mr. Palgrave's Bank Acts and Bank Rate, Mr. Haupt's The Monetary Question in 1892, and Mr. Skinner's London Banks and Kindred Companies and Firms. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Virginia Banks and Banking Prior to the Civil War: With an Essay on the Banking System Needed Banking, according to modern methods, did not exist in Virginia prior to the year 1804. During all the Colonial period and, even more so, after the Revolution, voluntary associations, called unchartered banks, did a banking business, including the issue of currency notes. In the early part of the nineteenth century this busi ness had become a very extensive one, * and the unchartered banks Operated all over the State; but they rested entirely on individual effort, and the State had no part or lot in them. It would be as unprofitable now to follow them in the details of their operations as it would be to record the battles of the Kites and the Crows, from which John Milton turned with such disgust.
