Book Engineering in Chalk

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. A. Lord
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9780860175742
  • Pages : 350 pages

Download or read book Engineering in Chalk written by J. A. Lord and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides guidance on engineering in chalk. It describes the chalk's geological setting, its origins, occurrence, its stratigraphy, weathering and geomorphological situations, the material and mechanical properties. The descriptions are supported by a comprehensive set of photographs. It explains recommended schemes for the engineering description and classification of chalk, building on the work presented in CIRIA PR11, 'Foundations in Chalk'. The publication looks at the mechanical and material properties of intact, in-situ and compacted chalk and considers their implications for the design and construction of earthworks, cuttings, retaining walls and anchorages. Major sections deal with the selection and design of shallow and piled foundations. Based on analysis of the results of pile testing, the book makes recommendations for the design and choice of bored, CFA, driven cast-in-place and pre-formed piles in chalk and for estimating shaft and base resistances. Contents:1 Introduction, 2 The engineering geology of chalk, 3 Description and classification of chalk, 4 Mechanical properties of the chalk, 5 Chalk in embankments and fills, 6 Cuttings, retaining structures and anchorages in chalk, 7 Shallow foundations, 8 Piled foundations, 9 Site investigations in chalk, 10 Concluding remarks, References.

Book Fundamentals of Engineering Geology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Engineering Geology discusses geomorphological processes, particularly the linkages between geology, geo-technics, rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and foundation design. The book reviews igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, sedimentary rocks, and stratigraphy. Stratigraphy is based on three fundamental principles, namely, the "Law of Superposition, the ""Law of Faunal Succession

Book Engineering Geology

Download or read book Engineering Geology written by F G Bell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-02-14 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every engineering structure, whether it's a building, bridge or road, is affected by the ground on which it is built. Geology is of fundamental importance when deciding on the location and design of all engineering works, and it is essential that engineers have a basic knowledge of the subject. Engineering Geology introduces the fundamentals of the discipline and ensures that engineers have a clear understanding of the processes at work, and how they will impact on what is to be built. Core areas such as stratigraphy, rock types, structures and geological processes are explained, and put in context. The basics of soil mechanics and the links between groundwater conditions and underlying geology are introduced. As well as the theoretical knowledge necessary, Professor Bell introduces the techniques that engineers will need to learn about and understand the geological conditions in which they intend to build. Site investigation techniques are detailed, and the risks and risk avoidance methods for dealing with different conditions are explained. - Accessible introduction to geology for engineers - Key points illustrated with diagrams and photographs - Teaches the impact of geology on the planning and design of structures

Book Foundation Engineering Handbook

Download or read book Foundation Engineering Handbook written by Hsai-Yang Fang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 935 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ten years have passed since the first edition was published. During that period there have been a substantial number of changes in geotechnical engineering, especially in the applications of foundation engineering. As the world population increases, more land is needed and many soil deposits previously deemed unsuitable for residential housing or other construction projects are now being used. Such areas include problematic soil regions, mining subsidence areas, and sanitary landfills. To overcome the problems associated with these natural or man-made soil deposits, new and improved methods of analysis, design, and implementation are needed in foundation construction. As society develops and living standards rise, tall buildings, transportation facilities, and industrial complexes are increasingly being built. Because of the heavy design loads and the complicated environments, the traditional design concepts, construction materials, methods, and equipment also need improvement. Further, recent energy and material shortages have caused additional burdens on the engineering profession and brought about the need to seek alternative or cost-saving methods for foundation design and construction.
