Book Entangled Empires

Download or read book Entangled Empires written by Jorge Canizares-Esguerra and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to conventional wisdom, in the sixteenth century, Spain and Portugal served as a model to the English for how to go about establishing colonies in the New World and Africa. By the eighteenth century, however, it was Spain and Portugal that aspired to imitate the British. Editor Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra and the contributors to Entangled Empires challenge these long-standing assumptions, exploring how Spain, Britain, and Portugal shaped one another throughout the entire period, from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. They argue that these empires were interconnected from the very outset in their production and sharing of knowledge as well as in their economic activities. Willingly or unwillingly, African slaves, Amerindians, converso traders, smugglers, missionaries, diplomats, settlers, soldiers, and pirates crossed geographical, linguistic, and political boundaries and cocreated not only local but also imperial histories. Contributors reveal that entanglement was not merely a process that influenced events in the colonies after their founding; it was constitutive of European empire from the beginning. The essays in Entangled Empires seek to clarify the processes that rendered the intertwined histories of these colonial worlds invisible, including practices of archival erasure as well as selective memorialization. Bringing together a large geography and chronology, Entangled Empires emphasizes the importance of understanding connections, both intellectual and practical, between the English and Iberian imperial projects. The colonial history of the United States ought to be considered part of the history of colonial Latino-America just as Latin-American history should be understood as fundamental to the formation of the United States. Contributors: Ernesto Bassi, Benjamin Breen, Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra, Bradley Dixon, Kristie Flannery, Eliga Gould, Michael Guasco, April Hatfield, Christopher Heaney, Christopher Schmidt-Nowara, Mark Sheaves, Holly Snyder, Cameron Strang.

Book Peer Management

Download or read book Peer Management written by Allakka N D and published by MJP Publisher. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of us conduct our day-to-day life under the influence offriends and foes, who are collectively called peers. Peers arepart of that pressure group from which one has no consciousescape. During our formative years we master two basictechniques of “appease” or “fight” in order to cope with peerpressure. However in adult life these two tools often don’t seeus through as life and relationships are always not dividedinto watertight compartments of black and white. To handleblack and white, grey as well as colourful aspects of peer grouppolitics, we need to sharpen our understanding of psychobehaviouralas well as power game aspects of peership. This calls for peer management skills.Keeping this perspective in mind, this book has beenwritten as a management supplement both for individuals aswell as for the organizations. In fact like HR management, peer management shouldbe made an integral part of management development studiesnot only as a tool for damage control but also as a tool forproper utilization of team spirit and synergy of peer groups atthe work place and in the societal context. Proficiency in peermanagement skills is a must for those who are in the field ofnetworking, communication, creativity, production, marketing, consultancy and politics.

Book The Age of Entanglement

Download or read book The Age of Entanglement written by Louisa Gilder and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Age of Entanglement, Louisa Gilder brings to life one of the pivotal debates in twentieth century physics. In 1935, Albert Einstein famously showed that, according to the quantum theory, separated particles could act as if intimately connected–a phenomenon which he derisively described as “spooky action at a distance.” In that same year, Erwin Schrödinger christened this correlation “entanglement.” Yet its existence was mostly ignored until 1964, when the Irish physicist John Bell demonstrated just how strange this entanglement really was. Drawing on the papers, letters, and memoirs of the twentieth century’s greatest physicists, Gilder both humanizes and dramatizes the story by employing the scientists’ own words in imagined face-to-face dialogues. The result is a richly illuminating exploration of one of the most exciting concepts of quantum physics.

Book Navigate Your Faith

Download or read book Navigate Your Faith written by Ron Pratt and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's the point of being a Christian anymore? Many Christians today are feeling unfulfilled in their walk with God, and they have no idea it's because of the little decisions they're making each day that are leading them into lives of compromise. In Navigate Your Faith Ron Pratt uses a fictional American family to expose how the enemy lures believers into prioritizing their own pleasure, entertainment, or career goals over their relationship with Christ. This erodes their passion for Jesus and causes them to become spiritually bored and have powerless Christian lives. Rather than claiming that God will approve of Christians no matter what they do, as some modern ministers do, Navigate Your Faith challenges readers to take a hard look at their lives and see if they're simply incorporating Jesus into their lifestyles or allowing Him to set them on a course of His choosing. With proven strategies to rebuild lost intimacy with God, this book will help Christians recognize the deceptive tactics of the enemy, break out of complacency, and make a greater impact on the world around them. This book will help you recognize and avoid the deception of today's nominal Christian culture.
