  • Author : Ralph Wynn
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Biology of the Uterus written by Ralph Wynn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 759 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decade following the publication of the first edition of Cellular Biology of the Uterus, advances in this field have been so rapid as to require not merely a revision of the earlier text but an essentially new volume. Even the title of the book has been changed, to Biology of the Uterus, to reflect the incorporation of more material based on classical anatomy and physiology. This histological and embryological information provides a necessary, though often lacking, background for the protein chemist and molecular biologist, and a bridge between biochemistry and biophysics, on the one hand, and clinical medicine, on the other. Thus, major practical problems in human reproduction, such as the mode of action of contraceptive agents and the cause of the initiation of labor, may be approached on a firm scientific footing. This text deals primarily with the biology of the uterus itself (comparative and human) rather than with placentation or pregnancy, and as such is a synthesis of data derived from many techniques, conventional and modern. Inasmuch as it is clearly beyond the competence of anyone scientist to prepare such a text on the basis of personal knowledge and experience, the aid of distinguished biologists from this country and abroad was enlisted. All of these authors, acknowledged experts in their respective fields, agreed to extensive revision of their chapters or preparation of entirely new contributions.

Book Hormones and Lung Maturation

Download or read book Hormones and Lung Maturation written by Philip L. Ballard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I reflect on the evolution of this book, I am struck by the differences be tween my early conceptions and the final product. When I was first ap proached by Springer-Verlag regarding a monograph on my interests in the area of fetal lung development, I imagined that it would be relatively easy to summarize my contributions, plus the work of other investigators as needed for proper perspective. This rather naive idea was abandoned as I prepared my initial outlines for the monograph. I quickly realized that con tributions from my laboratory are not sufficient for telling the story of "hormones and lung maturation". The result of this decision is a longer and more heavily-referenced book than I originally envisioned. Although I have attempted to discuss in considerable detail most aspects of hormones and the fetal lung, I know with certainty that I have not in cluded all relevant references in each area. In most of these instances this reflects my impatience or lack of diligence, and I offer my apologies to those investigators whose work has been so omitted. In some situations published work has not been cited in a deliberate decision to limit the breadth of discussion or, rarely, due to my judgment of major shortcom ings in experimental design or execution.

Book Hormones and the Fetus

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. R. Pasqualini
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-10-22
  • ISBN : 1483286681
  • Pages : 370 pages

Download or read book Hormones and the Fetus written by J. R. Pasqualini and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One of Hormones and the Fetus contained a generalization of the role of hormones during fetal life. In this second volume, the main topics focus on hormonal binding to fetal and maternal plasma proteins, amniotic fluid and placenta; the presence of hormone receptors in the fetal compartment; and the mechanism of action of various hormones in different target tissues of the fetus and placenta. This up-to-date information is of major importance in the study of hormonal activity in fetal life, and the biological effect of hormones through the receptor. The mechanism of fetal sexual differentiation, in which hormones play an important role, is extensively covered.
