Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Encyclopaedia of the Poultry Yard Andalusian Fowl - This fowl is no doubt a native of Spain, whence it found its way into this country, where it was crossed with the Black Spanish variety with the apparent object of increasing the size of its comb, an improvement of very doubtful value. The Andalusian can scarcely be regarded as a desirable bird for table purposes, though it possesses some merits in that di rection; but its great value lies in its powers as an egg-producer, the productiveness of the hens being exceptionally high. Their eggs, in addition to being numerous, are large and of a good avour, and of a white colour. The breed stands confinement very well, and hence is well worthy of the consideration of those who have only a limited amount of space for their birds. Andalusian hens rarely, if ever, evince a desire to incubate, and hence the variety may be included in the category of non-sitting breeds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Poultry Book: A Manual for the American Poultry Yard We have in mind widows, who have been left with families of small children dependent upon them, but without any means of support except the needle; maiden ladies, whom life's lottery has left without a household mate and pro tector; persons of infirm health, who have neither the strength nor facilities for the severe bodily or mental exertion which is required in other branches of indus try; the families of laborers, whose scanty earnings are but barely sufficient to feed and clothe the wife and little ones: All these, if so situated that they can have the use of a small tract of land, may greatly lighten the burdens of life by the keeping of poultry, and if we do not present this business in the glowing light that some enthusiasts do, it is that such as these may find in our book no incentives to extravagant anticipation, only to be followed by disappointment; but may be led to begin cautiously and work carefully until experience shall have taught them with the least possible loss - for experience teaches only by losses, or what is the same, by failures to attain possible gains - the most suitable methods for their estates and conditions. The foregoing remarks apply simply to the breeding of poultry for flesh and eggs; the breeding of fancy poultry is a separate business, and one which te quires special adaptitude for success, as well as a knowledge which can only be bought by experience It is not a business to be picked up in a day, any more than the breeding of horses and cattle. The same principles underlie the whole theory of breeding, and these principles are only to be mastered by years of study and practice; therefore we would advise those of limited means who have aspirations in this direction, to begin with one or two varieties of fowls; learn their habits and needs, and increase their number only in proportion as this knowledge is obtained. It is a knowledge which cannot be obtained from books, although books may be of such assistance that no poultry breeder can afford to do without them; but the information which they give must be mingled with personal experience, and thus digested and assimilated before it can be of much practical value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Poultry Yard: Comprising the Origin, History, and Description of the Different Breeds of Domestic Poultry The apparent omission of the name of the domestic fowl from the Old Testament may possibly have arisen from this cause, namely, that tending them would be the occupation of women, whose domestic employments are less prominently brought forward by oriental writers than the active enterprises of men and, also, that the birds specially named there are the unclean birds, which are to be avoided, whereas those Which may be eaten are classed in a lump as clean. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense in the Poultry Yard: A Story of Failures and Successes, Including a Full Account of 1000 Hens and What They Did I have put the subject in the form of a story, in the hope that some who would be repelled by a mere treatise may find the work sufficiently interest ing to read it through. But although the principles and methods are strung on a slender thread of fiction, they are none the less true. Every house described, every device herein detailed, every method practiced, has been successfully used as related, so that the reader need not hesitate to put up coops and use them after these patterns. I have given the best practical results of years of experience, and not the mere imaginings of a theorist or a novelist. Download or read book The Poultryman and Pomologist Vol 1 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultryman and Pomologist, Vol. 1: August 1, 1900 The size depends upon the advantages of the farmer. A loo-egg machine or even a zoo-egg one is small enough. If a smaller one is purchased you can't place more than its natural capacity in it, while you don't have to fill a large one yet you could put in more eggs if you wanted to. One question is will the farmer raise enough chicks to pay to buy an incubator? Does he or will he spend enough time in caring for them to make an incubator pay? In the first place, if he has an incubator it will pay because he can raise more chickens if he will spend time in caring for them. Here is another objection. Has he enough land so that he may allow sufficient for a chicken yard? Many farmers feel that all the land used for a poultry yard is wasted. They must consider what the returns. Are. If you would ask some farmers to fence off an acre of land and raise fowls in it, all that it would support, they would almost laugh at you. _an acre will be plenty for 100 hens. With proper care and feed they would bring in a profit of $100. With wheat at 75 cents per bushel it would take 133% bushels to bring in $100. It would require good land to raise that much. And besides fowls don't require the very best land, some of the poorer will do for them. But that is almost leaving our subject. Now if a farmer or anyone else wants to raise a lot of fowls he surely doesn't want to be bothered with 25 or 30 old setting hens which will break more eggs than they hatch, step on the chicks and kill them, and eat more feed than all the chicks together. Book The American Poulterer s Companion

Download or read book The American Poulterer s Companion written by Caleb N. Bement and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Poulterer's Companion: A Practical Treatise on the Breeding, Rearing, and General Management of Various Species of Domestic Poultry In laying before the public this new, enlarged, and much improved edition of the "American Poulterer's Companion," the author deems it necessary and not out of place to offer a few remarks regarding the undertaking. The work was first commenced in consequence of the urgent solicitation of numerous friends, who professed to think that I was well qualified for the task, and an authority upon which reliance could be placed, from the fact that the main portion of my lifetime had been devoted to the subject of poultry; for from my earliest youth I have taken great delight in studying, comparing, and admiring our numerous varieties of domestic fowls, which tend so much to enliven and adorn our farm-yards. Impressed for a long time with the belief that poultry, under proper management, might be made as profitable, according to the capital invested, as any other branch of industry properly connected to farming; and with the view of satisfying myself on that point, I kept an accurate account of expenses and income, and found, on footing up the account, my previous opinion confirmed. From this register of results I have been enabled to draw such observations as I hope may be found correct and useful to such as seek information on the subject. It is a common saying, that if we would sit down and write that which we have practically learned upon almost any subject, the information imparted could scarcely fail of being useful. Just so far my ambition extends. Nor is the world entirely without need of advice on this subject, notwithstanding its antiquity and the multitude of counselors. Download or read book A Manual on Poultry Classic Reprint written by J. T. Henderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual on Poultry One of the secrets of the success of French agriculture is the attention bestowed upon the small industries of the farm, and one of the principal obstacles to successful agriculture in the Southern States is the neglect of these industries. The dairy, garden, poultry yard, apiary, and fish ponds, should, not only contribute largely to the food supply of the family but should, by the sale of surplus products, materially supplement the princi pal sources of income of the farm. The hope that the information conveyed in this little work may induce the bestowal of more and better attention upon the important industry of which it treats, and thus increase the health, pleasure, profit and comfort of the families of Georgia, induces its publication.
