Book The Encyclopaedia Britannica Vol 23

Download or read book The Encyclopaedia Britannica Vol 23 written by Hugh Chisholm and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 1080 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Encyclopaedia Britannica, Vol. 23: A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, Literature and General Information; Refectory to Sainte-Beuve The first step in clarifying the situation is to come to a full realization that the medieval Church was essentially an inter national state, and that the character of the Protestant secession from it was largely determined by this fact. As Maitland suggests: We could frame no ac on, ceptable definition of a State which would not com medieval prehend the Church What has it not that a State aw? Should have? It has laws, law givers, law courts, 23: lawyers. It uses physical force to compel men to obey the laws. It keeps prisons. In the 13th century, though with squeamish phrases, it pronounced sentence of death. It is no voluntary society; if people are not born into it they are baptized into it when they cannot help them selves. If they attempt to leave they are guilty of crimerz Iaesae majestatis, and are likely to be burned. It is supported by involuntary contributions, by tithe and tax (canon Law in thec/zurch of England, p. 'roo). The Church was not only organized like a modern bureaucracy, but performed many of the functions of a modern State It dominated the intellectual and profoundly affected the social interests of western Europe. Its economic influence was multiform and incalculable, owmg to its vast property, its system of taxation and its encourage ment of monasticism When Luther made his first great appeal to the German people in his Address to the German Nobility, he scarcely adverts to religious matters at all. He deals, on the contrary, almost exclusively with the social, financial, educational, industrial and general moral problems of the day. If Luther, who above all others had the religious issue ever before him, attacks the Church as a source of worldly disorder, it is not surprising that his contemporary Ulrich von Hutten should take a purely secular view of the issues involved. Moreover, in the fascinating collection of popular satires and ephemeral pamphlets made by Schade, one is constantly im pressed with the absence of religious fervour, and the highly secular nature of the matters discussed. The same may be said of the various Gravamina, or lists of grievances against the papacy drafted from time to time by German diets. Book Everything Explained That Is Explainable

Download or read book Everything Explained That Is Explainable written by Denis Boyles and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything Explained That Is Explainable is the audacious, utterly improbable story of the publication of the Eleventh Edition of the legendary Encyclopædia Britannica. It is the tale of a young American entrepreneur who rescued a dying publication with the help of a floundering newspaper, and in so doing produced a series of books that forever changed the face of publishing. Thanks to the efforts of 1,500 contributors, among them a young staff of university graduates as well as some of the most distinguished names of the day, the Eleventh Edition combined scholarship and readability in a way no previous encyclopedia had (or ever has again). Denis Boyles’s work of cultural history pulls back the curtain on the 44-million-word testament to the age of reason that has profoundly shaped the way we see the world.

Book The Encyclopaedia Britannica Vol 23

Download or read book The Encyclopaedia Britannica Vol 23 written by William Harrison De Puy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 1036 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Encyclopaedia Britannica, Vol. 23: A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and General Literature All these histories are more or less thrown into the shade by the great work of Tabarl, whose fame has never faded from his own day to ours, and who well deserves to have this article on early Arabic histories placed under his name. Abli Ja'far Mohammed b. J arir at-tabari (so his full name runs) is described as a tall lean figure, with large eyes, brown complexion, and hair which remained black till his death. His learning was astounding and few could speak so well. Born 224 A41. (838-9 a.d.) at Amol in Tabaristitn, he came to Baghdad as a young man and heard there the most famous teachers of the age. He travelled through Syria and Egypt (where he was in and finally settled down in Baghdad-where he remained till his death in 310 (923 so); always active and surrounded by pupils. He is said to have written forty pages daily for forty years. This no doubt is an exaggeration, but certainly he must have been a man of most persistent industry. His two chief works are a great Commentary on the Koran and his Annals. There is an anecdote to the effect that each originally filled leaves, but that his pupils found them too extensive to be written to his dictation, and that he then resolved to condense them to a tenth of their original size, exclaiming, God help usl Ambition is extinct. One cannot say how far this story is true, but it is probable enough that his materials, at least for the Annals, were many times greater than the book itself.
