Book The Encyclical of His Holiness Pius X on the Doctrine of the Modernists

Download or read book The Encyclical of His Holiness Pius X on the Doctrine of the Modernists written by Thomas E. Judge and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a Latin and English version of Pascendi with a commentary afterwards. It is an excellent presentation of this most important Encyclical. A deplorable and dishonorable tendency common enough in every age of the history of Christianity, but especially conspicuous at the present hour, leads certain minds to avow loudly their allegiance to the Catholic Church and to parade their professions of loyalty to her institutions in order that they may the more effectively rend her unity by heresy and schism. They may not all be equally conscious of the drift of their agitation or of the depth and dangers of their treason. Carried away by their enthusiasm for mistaken methods of reform, held in bondage by their subserviency to false systems of philosophy, viewing history and institutions in the warm glow of sentiment and emotion instead of in the cold, white light of intelligence, they are tossed about by every wind of doctrine, after having cast to the waves the guidance. of reason, authority and tradition. Their books and pamphlets are generally written in a captivating style, because most of their statements derive substance, form and color from incandescent imaginations and are confessedly exempted from conforming to the laws either of inductive or deductive logic. It has been well said that while God in the beginning created men in His image, men now create Him in their image. The Modernists' conception of Him, His attributes and our relations to Him are a factitious product, a sort of Stromata, to borrow the title of one of Clement of Alexandria's works, formed out of the most heterogeneous philosophical theories. The idea of Contingency associated with the name of M. Boutrox, Herbert Spencer's Relativity, Newman's principle of Development, Loisy's Kenotic hypothesis, the Pragmatism of Professor James and Blondel's Philosophy of Action are blended together in a manner that recalls the ingredients of the caldron by which the witches foretold the fortunes of Macbeth in the cave on the blasted heath. But the unifying, controlling and organizing principle of their system is to be sought in Kant's teaching concerning the limitations of Our Reason and the authority of Conscience. The following passage, written more than four years ago by the Rev. William Turner, S. T. D., in his "History of Philosophy," exactly describes the dependence of Modernism on the Critical Philosophy of Immanuel Kant:

Pius X viewed the church as under siege, intellectually from rationalism and materialism, politically from liberalism and anti-clericalism. The pope condemned modernism, a loose movement of Catholic biblical scholars, philosophers and theologians who believed that the church could not ignore new scientific historical research concerning the Bible.

Book Social Catholicism for the Twenty First Century Volume 1

Download or read book Social Catholicism for the Twenty First Century Volume 1 written by William F. Murphy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-09-12 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first of two volumes introduces the tradition of social Catholicism, not only in its earlier realizations, but regarding how a contemporary renewal might address the crisis in which constitutional democracies and the postwar liberal order are under assault by populist and even neo-fascist movements that could soon usher in a frighteningly dark future unless a broad movement in defense of constitutional democracy quickly arises. In this context, some of the most influential voices among American Catholics are focused on criticizing “liberal democracy,” on advocating a “postliberal order” and the establishment of a Catholic “integralist” state, or on insisting that abortion should be the primary sociopolitical concern for Catholics, treating these threats to democracy as largely irrelevant. This volume shows the rich tradition of social Catholicism, and how the Social Doctrine of the Church came to appreciate the key tenets of constitutional democracy. As Pope Benedict XVI wrote, this social doctrine leads us to “take a stand for the common good,” to take the “institutional” or “political path of charity,” to be “solicitous for” the “institutions that give structure to the life of society, juridically, civilly, politically and culturally.” It engages some of the most influential contemporary Catholic thinkers and argues that they too should recognize the grave threats facing the human family and join in working to defend and renew our constitutional democracy.

Book excerpt: Promulgated on September 8, 1907, Pascendi Dominici Gregis ("Feeding the Lord's Flock") is a powerful and prophetic encyclical offered by Pope St. Pius X at a critical time in the Catholic Church. In it, the Holy Father diagnoses and details the burgeoning of Modernism in the Church. He goes on to condemn Modernism and prescribe measures to prevent, retard, and extirpate it from the Church. Read in the light of the ecclesiastical chaos that would emerge in the 1960's and flourish in the decades thereafter, it becomes clear that Pope St. Pius X was correct in his concern about (and desire to destroy) the plague of Modernism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 1929 English translation of the original German text first published in 1924 and authored by one of the world’s most distinguished Christian philosophers, Dr. Karl Adam. This book is a brilliant and evocative study of the fundamental concepts of the Catholic Faith, from its tenets, its historical development and the role of the Church in world society. For many on the outside, Catholicism, according to Dr. Adam, represents a daunting and somewhat foreign confused mass of conflicting forces that has somehow survived the tests of time. Catholicism is simultaneously new yet quite old; holy yet corrupt; hierarchical yet personal; dogmatic yet utilitarian, and so on. How can someone outside the Church get a good grasp on the essence of Catholicism when it is so vast and seemingly complex? Those attempting to grasp the very heart and spirit of Catholicism should read Karl Adam’s book, which is a most elegant and concise exploration of the faith and an attempt to address these ambiguities. What are the fundamental attributes of the Catholic Church? What is the source from which it has drawn vigor and life through its two thousand years of life on earth? What are the secret sources of its incredible vitality in the world today? The author answers these and many other questions about the nature and structure of the Church. He examines the essential nature of the Catholic Church from the basic premise that it was expressly founded by Christ, traces its historical development and analyzes its actual functioning through the ages.
