Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physical and psychological aspects of alopecia areata Alopecia areata is an unpredictable disorder that affects more than two and a half million men, women, and children in the United States and Canada. Causing patchy hair loss on the scalp and sometimes elsewhere on the body, this mysterious, noncontagious condition can be treated but it cannot yet be cured. Alopecia Areata: Understanding and Coping with Hair Loss is a sensitive yet straightforward guide to the diagnosis and treatment of this poorly understood disease. With great compassion, the authors explain how hair loss can profoundly affect a person's quality of life. They discuss what it means to be diagnosed with alopecia areata, and provide medically reliable information on the latest research, diagnosis, and treatment options. Thompson and Shapiro also offer practical strategies for living with alopecia areata, which can go in and out of remission without any apparent reason. They discuss the physical and psychological adjustments to wearing a hairpiece and give pointers on selecting, securing, and maintaining a wig, whether human hair or synthetic, custom or ready-made. Alopecia Areata includes a chapter devoted to the special needs of children with this condition and concludes with an epilogue that tells the story of a day in the life of a woman with alopecia areata, illustrating the various challenges she faces and the strategies she uses to cope with these challenges.

Book Adverse Effects of Cancer Chemotherapy Anything New to Improve Tolerance and Reduce Sequelae

Download or read book Adverse Effects of Cancer Chemotherapy Anything New to Improve Tolerance and Reduce Sequelae written by Kulmira Nurgali and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in anti-cancer chemotherapy over recent years have led to improved efficacy in curing or controlling many cancers. Some chemotherapy-related side-effects are well recognized and include: nausea, vomiting, bone marrow suppression, peripheral neuropathy, cardiac and skeletal muscle dysfunction and renal impairment. However, it is becoming clearer that some chemotherapy-related adverse effects may persist even in long term cancer survivors. Problems such as cognitive, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal dysfunction, and neuropathy may lead to substantial long term morbidity. Despite improvements in treatments to counteract acute chemotherapy-induced adverse effects, they are often incompletely effective. Furthermore, counter-measures for some acute side-effects and many potential longer term sequelae of anti-cancer chemotherapy have not been developed. Thus, new insights into prevalence and mechanisms of cancer chemotherapy-related side effects are needed and new approaches to improving tolerance and reduce sequelae of cancer chemotherapy are urgently needed. The present Research Topic focuses on adverse effects and sequelae of chemotherapy and strategies to counteract them.

Book I Love Hate My Hair

Download or read book I Love Hate My Hair written by Tamara Harvey and published by Wavecloud Corporation. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 20 million women in the United States alone, are suffering from some type of hair loss. That's why it is so important for stories like mine to be heard. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of hair loss in women. This type of hereditary hair loss can begin any time after puberty and usually occurs, if at all, before the age of forty. For me it began when I was 28. In the book I share with you about how my hair loss began, the emotional effects of hair loss ranging from anxiety and depression, to frustration and poor self-esteem. I also feature the work of the stylists I have seen over the years; the breakdown of thousands of dollars I have spent, and recently deciding to have permanent cosmetics for my eyebrows. I want to thank my family and friends for the support they have given me over the last eighteen years. They have been major influencers in helping me throughout every stage of alopecia. Writing this book was empowering and made me feel like everything I have been through was worth it. Most importantly, I hope that this book will help others living with alopecia.

Book Handbook of hair in health and disease

Download or read book Handbook of hair in health and disease written by Victor R. Preedy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hair is a major component of the body's tissue system that contributes to the individual's make up and confers a large degree of personal identity. Apart from its visible façade, hair also has a functional role. It has an unique structure and complex molecular development. The very nature of hair makes it a suitable marker for the prognosis of disease. Hair can also be used to screen for toxins and changes in the diet. However, there are currently no suitable publications available that describe hair in a rational scientific context. This handbook provides an academic approach to hair in health and disease. Divided into five sections the Handbook of Hair in Health and Disease provides an insight into hair growth and loss, molecular and cellular biology of hair, dietary toxicity and pathological history, diseases and treatments of hair, as well as shampoos and conditioners. Unique features of each chapter in this volume include relevant and useful 'Key facts' which highlight interesting or important findings of the specific subjects and 'Summary points' that will give a clear overview of the subjects treated in each chapter. The Handbook of Hair in Health and Disease will be essential to a variety of users, such as trichologists, doctors and nurses and all those interested or working within the area of hair health. This includes nutritionists and dieticians, scientific beauticians, health workers and practitioners, college and university lecturers and undergraduate and graduate students.
