Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Emmanuel Movement in a New England Town: A Systematic Account of Experiments and Reflections Designed to Determine the Proper Relationship Between the Minister and the Doctor in the Light of Modern Needs 2. Religion and Medicine, an epoch making book if ever there was one, needs to be supplemented. In spite of the clear statement therein found of the Emmanuel principles, there are in the book some terms and concepts un familiar to lay minds. A book, based upon Emmanuel principles and yet practi cally free from scientific terminology, ought to carry the good news of God with us to many who may not yet have heard it. Dr. Worcester and Dr. Mc Comb are of course fully competent to speak for themselves again as they have convincingly spoken in Religion and Medicine and they have no responsibility of any sort for this volume; but there would seem to be a place for a book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mindfulness and yoga are widely said to improve mental and physical health, and booming industries have emerged to teach them as secular techniques. This movement is typically traced to the 1970s, but it actually began a century earlier. Wakoh Shannon Hickey shows that most of those who first advocated meditation for healing were women: leaders of the "Mind Cure" movement, which emerged during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Instructed by Buddhist and Hindu missionaries, many of these women believed that by transforming consciousness, they could also transform oppressive conditions in which they lived. For women - and many African-American men - "Mind Cure" meant not just happiness, but liberation in concrete political, economic, and legal terms. In response to the perceived threat posed by this movement, white male doctors and clergy with elite academic credentials began to channel key Mind Cure methods into "scientific" psychology and medicine. As mental therapeutics became medicalized and commodified, the religious roots of meditation, like the social-justice agendas of early Mind Curers, fell by the wayside. Although characterized as "universal," mindfulness has very specific historical and cultural roots, and is now largely marketed by and accessible to affluent white people. Hickey examines religious dimensions of the Mindfulness movement and clinical research about its effectiveness. By treating stress-related illness individualistically, she argues, the contemporary movement obscures the roles religious communities can play in fostering civil society and personal wellbeing, and diverts attention from systemic factors fueling stress-related illness, including racism, sexism, and poverty.

Book A Cultural History of the Emotions in the Age of Romanticism Revolution and Empire

Download or read book A Cultural History of the Emotions in the Age of Romanticism Revolution and Empire written by Susan J. Matt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1780 and 1920, modern conceptions of emotion-conceptions still very much present in the 21st century-first took shape. This book traces that history, charting the changing meaning and experience of feelings in an era shaped by political and market revolutions, romanticism, empiricism, the rise of psychology and psychoanalysis. During this period, the word emotion itself gained currency, gradually supplanting older vocabularies and visions of feeling. Terms to describe feelings changed; so too did conceptions of emotions' proper role in politics, economics, and culture. Political upheavals turned a spotlight on the role of feeling in public life; in domestic life, sentimental bonds gained new importance, as families were transformed from productive units to emotional ones. From the halls of parliaments to the familial hearth, from the art museum to the theatre, from the pulpit to the concert hall, lively debates over feelings raged across the 19th century.
