Book The Lesser Bushbaby Galago as an Animal Model Selected Topics

Download or read book The Lesser Bushbaby Galago as an Animal Model Selected Topics written by Duane E. Haines and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not the goal of the present volume to promote Galago as an animal model, but to alert investigators to the potential thereof. In this respect, this collection of papers serves as a general introduction. The subjects covered are purposefully broad so as to illustrate that Galago not only has been, but may be, utilized with success in a variety of research areas. Most papers deal with the pros and cons of utilizing Galago in a specific line of research and in many instances discuss potential problems which may arise. The established value of the lesser bushbaby in particular reseach endeavour is also discussed and illustrated by some contributors.

Book The Embryology of the Common Marmoset

Download or read book The Embryology of the Common Marmoset written by I.R. Phillips and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primates represent a diverse group with the phylogenetic relationships of the var ious species reflected in their early embryonic development. The members of the Tupaiidae, Lemuridae and Lorisidae show great similarities to the lower mammals and even birds. The Tarsiidae represent an intermediate step and the Platyrrhini and Catarrhini exhibit the greatest similarities to man. During the period of embryogenesis, the dimensions of an embryo are insufficient guide to its age and much more reliable information can be derived from a study of its external form and internal structure. Examination of embryological specimens from a variety of simian species dates back to the early 1900's but much of this material was collected in a haphazard way from animals shot in the wild. Heuser and Streeter (1941) depicted a series of embryos of the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) and correlated their gestational age with external form and size. Streeter (1951) arranged human em bryos, between 24. ± 1 and 47. ± 1 days of post-ovulation age, into age groups or devel opmental horizons based on their external form and internal structure. Each horizon was two days apart and numbered XI to XXIII. The transition from embryo to fetus occurred at the end of horizon XXIII and was arbitrarily dermed as the point where bone marrow invaded the cartilaginous precursor in the humerus. The earlier stages I-X have been dermed subsequently, (Heuser and Corner, 1957; O'Rahilly, 1973).

Book Primate Evolutionary Biology

Download or read book Primate Evolutionary Biology written by A.B. Chiarelli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The VIIIth International Congress of the International Prirnatological Society was held from 7 through 11 July 1980 in Florence Italy, under the auspices of the host institution, the Istituto di Antropologia of the University of Florence. More than 300 papers and abstracts were pre sented either at the main Congress or in 14 pre-Congress symposia the week earlier (so scheduled to avoid conflict with either the main invited lectures or the contnbuted paper sessions). This volume consists of the contributed papers on primate evolu tionary biology, primarily functional morphology, evolution, and pale ontology. This is a coherent (though broad) and important sub field of primatology. We have thus focused the subject, in agreement with the publishers, to help ensure a successful and useful volume, befitting these very current contributions from the biennal meeting of the Inter national Primatological Society. Furthermore, we have compiled this volume in a fairly unprecedented manner for congress proceedings. In view of space and budget limitations, and the need to guarantee a high-quallty book with appeal for specialists, we subjected all manuscript to a four-stage internal review process and selected only the best 13 of 31. This rejection rate of 58% compares with the more discriminating reviewed scholarly journals. Too often primatological or anthropological proceedings have been heterogeneous, large, unselective volumes that, at least recently, have repeatedly lost money for the publishing house (in sometimes spectacular amounts).

Book Nursery Rearing of Nonhuman Primates in the 21st Century

Download or read book Nursery Rearing of Nonhuman Primates in the 21st Century written by Gene P. Sackett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursery Rearing of Nonhuman Primates in the 21st Century describes how and why nursery rearing of primates can produce adaptable juveniles and adults for research, conservation, and display-educational purposes. The volume details the history of nursery rearing since the mid-19th century, the outcomes of varied nursery rearing methods, the contemporary goals of nursery rearing as well as reference data derived from species commonly reared in nursery or hand-feeding situations. Examples of the changing goals of nursery rearing covered in this volume are the need for biological containment in disease research, the production of specific pathogen-free colonies by removal of neonates from the mother, the production of phenotypes for genetic and molecular biology studies, and the breeding of endangered species for conservation or research purposes.

Book excerpt: The first and still the only book focused exclusively on juvenile primates, this collection presents original research covering all the major divisions of primates, from prosimians to humans. Contributors explore the evolutionary history of the juvenile stage in primates, differences in behavior between juvenile males and females, how juvenile behaviors act both to prepare juveniles for adulthood and to help them survive the juvenile stage, how juveniles learn about and participate in social conflict and dominance relationships, and the similarities and differences between development of juvenile human and nonhuman primates. This edition includes a new foreword and bibliography prepared by the editors. Contributors: Filippo Aureli, Bernard Chapais, Marina Cords, Carolyn M. Crockett, Frans B.
