Book The Zealot and the Emancipator

Download or read book The Zealot and the Emancipator written by H. W. Brands and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed historian and bestselling author: a page-turning account of the epic struggle over slavery as embodied by John Brown and Abraham Lincoln—two men moved to radically different acts to confront our nation’s gravest sin. John Brown was a charismatic and deeply religious man who heard the God of the Old Testament speaking to him, telling him to destroy slavery by any means. When Congress opened Kansas territory to slavery in 1854, Brown raised a band of followers to wage war. His men tore pro-slavery settlers from their homes and hacked them to death with broadswords. Three years later, Brown and his men assaulted the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, hoping to arm slaves with weapons for a race war that would cleanse the nation of slavery. Brown’s violence pointed ambitious Illinois lawyer and former officeholder Abraham Lincoln toward a different solution to slavery: politics. Lincoln spoke cautiously and dreamed big, plotting his path back to Washington and perhaps to the White House. Yet his caution could not protect him from the vortex of violence Brown had set in motion. After Brown’s arrest, his righteous dignity on the way to the gallows led many in the North to see him as a martyr to liberty. Southerners responded with anger and horror to a terrorist being made into a saint. Lincoln shrewdly threaded the needle between the opposing voices of the fractured nation and won election as president. But the time for moderation had passed, and Lincoln’s fervent belief that democracy could resolve its moral crises peacefully faced its ultimate test. The Zealot and the Emancipator is the thrilling account of how two American giants shaped the war for freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlisting memory in a new fight for freedom From the Gilded Age through the Progressive era, labor movements reinterpreted Abraham Lincoln as a liberator of working people while workers equated activism with their own service fighting for freedom during the war. Matthew E. Stanley explores the wide-ranging meanings and diverse imagery used by Civil War veterans within the sprawling radical politics of the time. As he shows, a rich world of rituals, songs, speeches, and newspapers emerged among the many strains of working class cultural politics within the labor movement. Yet tensions arose even among allies. Some people rooted Civil War commemoration in nationalism and reform, and in time, these conservative currents marginalized radical workers who tied their remembering to revolution, internationalism, and socialism. An original consideration of meaning and memory, Grand Army of Labor reveals the complex ways workers drew on themes of emancipation and equality in the long battle for workers’ rights.

Book Soviet Politics of Emancipation of Ethnic Minority Woman

Download or read book Soviet Politics of Emancipation of Ethnic Minority Woman written by Yulia Gradskova and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a new perspective through a closer look on “Other”, i.e. ethnic minority women defined by the Soviet documents as natsionalka. Applying decolonial theory and critical race and whiteness studies, the book analyzes archive documents, early Soviet films and mass publications in order to explore how the “emancipation” and “culturalization” of women of “culturally backward nations” was practiced and presented for the mass Soviet audience. Whilst the special focus of the book lies in the region between the Volga and the Urals (and Muslim women of the Central Eurasia), the Soviet emancipation practices are presented in the broader context of gendered politics of modernization in the beginning of the 20th century. The analysis of the Soviet documents of the 1920s-1930s not only subverts the Soviet story on “generous help” with emancipation of natsionalka through uncovering its imperial/colonial aspects, but also makes an important contribution to the studies of imperial domination and colonial politics. This book is addressed to all interested in Russian and Eurasian studies and in decolonial approach to gender history.

Book A Woman s Philosophy of Woman or Woman affranchised

Download or read book A Woman s Philosophy of Woman or Woman affranchised written by Madame d' Héricourt and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Madame d' Héricourt stood up for woman's right by answer to various opinions on the social relations of the sexes put forward by prominent male writers of her time. She attempted to prove that woman has the same rights as man. She challenged and denied the views of women's intellectual inferiority promoted by the socialist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. In this remarkable work, she also confronted the 'woman on a pedestal' theories of Auguste Comte and Jules Michelet. In the latter part of the book, she presented her own 'philosophy of woman with great intellectual firmness.' The work did immense service to French society when the country's literature was on the brink of decay.
