Download or read book Empire And Community written by David P. Fidler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empire and Community provides the first comprehensive presentation of Edmund Burke’s thinking on international relations. Although Burke’s writings and speeches have been the subject of much analysis and controversy, his perspective on international relations has not been fully addressed by the scholarly community. David P. Fidler and Jennifer M. Welsh establish Burke as a “classical thinker” on international relations and help to situate his thinking within current international relations theory. Their detailed introduction is followed by edited selections from Burke’s writings and speeches on Ireland, America, India, and the French Revolution.
Download or read book Democratic Vernaculars written by J Michael Sproule and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democratic Vernaculars is a comprehensive, culturally inclusive, and thematically unified history of the communicative, audience-centered rhetorical vernacular that occupies the “middle range” of English, bounded on the one side by expressive structure (grammar and linguistics) and on the other by aesthetics (literature). Broadening the history of rhetoric by considering a vast collection of vernacular resources such as elementary grammars and readers, popular guidebooks, textbooks, and rhetorical treatises, this book advances the history of the rhetorical theory and pedagogy since the 17th century by examining ways in which diverse vectors of the rhetorical vernacular coalesced to produce an English language sufficiently idiomatic for practical social exchange while being, at the same time, suitable for higher literary, scholarly, and cultural pursuits. Democratic Vernaculars is essential reading for scholars in rhetoric and the histories of language and education, and can serve as a text for upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses in rhetoric.

Download or read book Imprison d Wranglers written by Christopher Reid and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the later eighteenth century has long been regarded as parliamentary oratory's golden age, its speaking history remains to a large extent unexplored. Imprison'd Wranglers looks in detail at the making of a rhetorical culture inside and outside of the House of Commons during this eventful period, a time when Parliament consolidated its authority as a national institution and gained a new kind of prominence in the public eye. Drawing on a wide range of contemporary sources including newspaper reports, parliamentary diaries, memoirs, correspondence, political cartoons, and portraiture, this book reconstructs the scene in St. Stephen's Chapel, where the Commons then sat. It shows how reputations were forged and characters contested as speakers like Burke, North, Fox, and Pitt crossed swords in confrontations that were both personal and political. With close attention to the early lives of selected MPs, it pieces together the education of the parliamentary elite from their initiation as public speakers in schools, universities, and debating clubs to the moment of trial when they rose to speak in the House for the first time. Since this was the period when the newspaper reporting of parliamentary debates was first established, the book also assesses the impact speeches made on the audiences of ordinary readers outside Parliament. It explains how parliamentary speeches got into print, what was at stake politically in that process, and argues that changing conceptions of publicness in the eighteenth century altered the image of the parliamentary speaker and unsettled the traditional rhetorical culture of the House.
