Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Physiological Physics: An Outline of the Elementary Facts, Principles, and Methods of Physics; And Their Applications in Physiology The modern development of Physiology has been largely due to the application to this branch of science of physical and chemical principles and laws. Physics and chemistry are now constantly appealed to for aid in working out physiological problems; and the physiologist finds himself continually resorting to physical methods and apparatus, both for purposes of illustration and research. In some respects, therefore, the study and the teaching of Physiology have become increasingly difficult because of the broadening of its relations with other sciences. In the teaching of the subject at the University of Glasgow the want has been felt of a small text-book for students, in which the elementary facts and principles of physics might be given together with their physiological applications, and in which might be included some detailed description of physical apparatus and methods as adapted to physiological purposes. To meet this want to some extent, a series of weekly demonstrations was given by me to the students attending the class during the winter months; and one of the results of that series is this text-book. Book Elements of Physiological Psychology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physiological Psychology: A Treatise of the Activities and Nature of the Mind From the Physical and Experimental Points of View (Thoroughly Revised and Re-Written) I am under particular obligations to Dr. James K. Thacher, Professor of Physiology in the Yale Medical School, for valuable assistance in that description of the Nervous Mechanism, its struct ure and functions, which the First Part of the book contains. If I have escaped the mistake of assuming to teach more than is really known upon this subject, it has been in large measure due to his friendly and skilful guidance. Valuable assistance has also been received from Russell H. Chittenden, Professor of Physiological Chemistry, and Charles S. Hastings, Professor Of Physics - both of the Sheffield Scientific School. The method and arrangement of the book have been chosen so as to fit it for use, both as a text-book by special students Of the subjects Of which it treats, and also by the general reader who is interested in knowing what results have been reached by the more modern - and even the latest - psycho-physical researches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first principles of the present work I laid down in my small pamphlet entitled Grundriss der Naturphilosophie, der Theorie der Sinne und der darauf gegrundeten Classification der Thiere; Frankfurt bey Eichenberg, 1802, 8vo (out of print). I still abide by the position there taken, namely, that the Animal Classes are virtually nothing else than a representation of the sense-organs, and that they must be arranged in accordance with them. Thus, strictly speaking, there are only 5 Animal Classes: Dermatozoa, or the Invertebrata; Glossozoa, or the Fishes, as being those animals in whom a true tongue makes for the first time its appearance; Rhinozoa, or the Reptiles, wherein the nose opens for the first time into the mouth and inhales air; Otozoa, or the Birds, in which the ear for the first time opens externally; Ophthalmozoa, or the Thricozoa, in whom all the organs of sense are present and complete, the eyes being moveable and covered with two palpebr or lids. But since all vegetative systems are subordinated to the tegument or general sense of feeling, the Dermatozoa divide into just as many or corresponding divisions, which, on account of the quantity of their contents, may be for the sake of convenience also termed classes. Thereby 9 classes of the inferior animals originate, but which, when taken together, have only the worth or value of a single class. So much by way of explaining the apparent want of uniformity in the system.

Book Physics and the Human Body

Download or read book Physics and the Human Body written by Hiram Baddeley and published by PHYSICS AND THE HUMAN BODY. This book was released on 2008 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics and the Human Body is about how we found out how our bodies and the world about us work. It is the common history of the discovery of the laws of physics and the exploration of human body over more than two millennia. Theories about what nature is, what we are and how our bodies function, have concerned natural philosophers and physicians since the time of Hippocrates and Empedocles. The purpose of this book is to give a coherent history of relevant theories and discoveries to show how physics and human biology are linked. Since the Renaissance natural philosophers and physicians have collaborated and influenced one another; Galileo and Santorini, Borelli and Malpighi, Isaac Newton and John Locke, Marie Curie and Claudius Regaud. Many theories and discoveries have been made by those who were both natural philosophers and physicians: Empedocles, Ibn Sina, Gilbert, Stensen, Mayow, Stahl, Black, Poiseuille, Young, Purkinje, von Helmholtz, Berzelius and Koch. Two important themes recur in these stories of discovery. The first is the close relationship between the physical and medical sciences. The second is the inspirational nature of discovery and the power of inventive genius to formulate surprising theories of great explanatory and predictive power; theories that have revolutionized our ways of looking at the natural world and ourselves. These discoveries emphasize that the laws of physics govern the living human body as they do inanimate matter. Physics goes on inside us as well as outside. Yet for many people this unsurprising reality has been hard to accept because physics and medical biology have, in the past, been presented as entirely separate disciplines. The physics of quantum electrodynamics helped to understand the role of DNA in human genetics. The Human Genome Project completed in 2003 resulted from the discoveries of physicists as well as medical scientists and promises further insights into our nature. Quantum and radiation physics have provided new technologies such as ultrasound, nuclear medicine and computed tomography for non-surgical exploration of the living body.
