Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Mechanics The work presents the mixture of strict mechanical principles, with the physical inferences from experiment and Observation, that is de manded by the plan Of teaching Natural Philosophy, which is generally adopted in this country, and which is habitual in most Of the English Treatises on that general subject. 'it is therefore a combination Of the subject, styled by the French Mecanique, with so much of the department called by them Physique, as is necessary for its illustration, and for pre paring the way forlpractical applications. Nor have the latter been wholly omitted. _they have, in the scope of the treatise, frequently come into View, and have in all such cases been treated m We manner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word "elements" in the title of this book does not convey the implica tion that its contents are "elementary" in the sense of "easy": it mainly means that no prerequisites are required, with the exception of some basic background in classical physics and calculus. It also signifies "devoted to the foundations". In fact, the arguments chosen are all very classical, and the formal or technical developments of this century are absent, as well as a detailed treatment of such problems as the theory of the planetary motions and other very concrete mechanical problems. This second meaning, however, is the result of the necessity of finishing this work in a reasonable amount of time rather than an a priori choice. Therefore a detailed review of the "few" results of ergodic theory, of the "many" results of statistical mechanics, of the classical theory of fields (elasticity and waves), and of quantum mechanics are also totally absent; they could constitute the subject of two additional volumes on mechanics. This book grew out of several courses on meccanica razionaie, i.e., essentially, theoretical mechanics, which I gave at the University of Rome during the years 1975-1978.

Book The Elements of Analytical Mechanics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Elements of Analytical Mechanics Classic Reprint written by Devolson Wood and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Analytical Mechanics The plan of this edition is the same as the former one. It is designed especially for students who are beginning the study of Analytical Mechanics, and is preparatory to the higher works upon the same subject, and to Analytical Physics and Astronomy. The Calculus is freely used. I have sought to present the subject in such a manner as to familiarize the student with analytical processes. For this reason the solutions of problems have been treated as applications of general formulas. The solution by this method is often more lengthy than by special methods; still, it has advantages over the latter, because it establishes a uniformity in the process. My experience has shown the importance of applying the fundamental equations to a great variety of problems. I have, therefore, in Article 24, and Chapters IV. and X., given a large number and a considerable variety of problems to be solved by the general equations under which they respectively fall. In the revision I have been aided not only by my own experience with the use of the former edition in the class-room, but also by the friendly advice and criticism of several professors, that of colleges who have used the work. The result has been several pages have been rewritten, some definitions changed, and the typographical errors corrected. Several new pages in the latter part of the work have been added. I am especially indebted to Professor E. T. Quimby, of Dartmouth College, Hanover, N. H., for his valuable suggestions and for assistance in reading the final proofs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Mechanics: A Text-Book for Colleges and Technical Schools Such a method is certainly calculated to limber up our theories and put them all at work, ' the pragmatici method our friends the philosophers call it, a method which pretends to a conquer ing destiny and whatever one may think of that philosophy of life which exhibits itself in a temperament of the most intensely practical and matter-of-fact type, it is certain that pragmatism is the only philosophy a science teacher can entertain and escape what to him is the most dangerous form of idolatry, science for its own sake. We wish to place on record our contempt for the poundal as an actual practical unit of force, and also for the slug pounds) as an actual practical unit of mass. Engineers will per haps always measure breaking strengths and the like in pounds weight, and hungry people will perhaps always buy bread and meat by the pound. But most certainly we do need the word pounded or the word slug so as to enable systematic units and practical units to be connected in intelligible argument. We pre fer the word pounded for this purpose. There is no doubt in our minds that practical units should be accepted in their entirety, pounds of cargo and pounds-weight of propelling force, and we consider that to attempt to simplify the equations of dynamics by the introduction of an unfamiliar and unused unit of force or mass is ridiculous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Mechanics: Forty Lessons for Beginners in Engineering During the past forty years great advances have been made in the methods of instruction in all branches of applied mechanics, but little or no change has taken place in the manner of presenting the subject of rational mechanics. This elementary volume is an attempt to apply the best methods of applied mechanics to the development of the fundamental principles and methods of rational mechanics. To this end, constant appeals are made to experience, by which alone the laws of mechanics can be established, numerous numerical illustrations are given, many queries and problems are stated as exercises for the student, and a system of units is employed with which every boy is acquainted. The field of rational mechanics is so vast that no book can present more than a part of the same. Even the limited course usually given in engineering colleges is so difficult and appeals so little to the students' experience that few acquire a complete mastery of it. In the opinion of the author there should be given in every engineering college two courses in rational mechanics, an elementary one during the freshman year in which only as much mathematics is employed as is indispensably necessary, and an advanced one after the completion of the course in calculus. This book was released on 2016-07-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Mechanics, Comprehending Statics and Dynamics, With a Copious Collection of Mechanical Problems: With Plates The second section is on the theory Of the equilibrium Of l rigid body delivered in all its generality, and applied to a misty of examples. The closing chapter of this section is devoted to a subject of considerable practical importance, the strength and stress of beams for the principal materials of it, I am indebted to Mr. Barlow's experimental inquiries on this subject. These two sections comprise the theory Of Statics; the second part, or Dynamics, is divided into three sections; the first being on the rectilinear motion of a free point, the second on its curvilinear motion, and the third discussing the general theory Of the motion of a solid body. In the opening chapter of the first section, the fundamental equations of motion are deduced from simple and obvious considerations, and pains are taken to give a clear and dis tinct meaning to the several analytical expressions involved in these fundamental equations. All these are then fully illustrated by interesting practical exercises. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Dynamics (Mechanics): With Numerous Examples and Examination Questions The object of this treatise is to provide a manual of what has been generally known as the Elements of Mechanics, but is here, in accordance with the more precise phraseology of recent works, termed Dynamics. As the work is primarily intended for beginners, special pains have been taken to establish the necessary propositions by proofs involving no higher mathematics than the geometry of the first two books of Euclid, and algebra as far as simple equations. At the same time, the nomenclature, definitions, and general treatment are in harmony with advanced modern works on the subject.
